I played Star Control quite late - some open source port actually - but even when my understanding of English and the story was abysmal, I was fascinated by the intertwined stories, and how the game actually had morals that pushed them to their resolution, they just don't bother telling you who/what or why. The absence of hand-holding and the overarching story seeded across the universe really appealed to me (though sometimes through caricatures of the characters). Recently I found that they had a shoutout section in the manual, for sci-fi/fantasy authors that inspired them.

Nip 44 is fine. It just needs some sort of private list to accompany it by default to mark messages as "seen" or "archived" so I don't have to re-clear every message I have ever received every time I use a fresh client.
On some level you chose to experience it all, the flat tyre, the bad meeting & delayed flight. We don't like it, it's uncomfortable but you chose it for a reason.
The trick is to be aware enough to notice the reason. You can also simply just embrace the unknown & just go with it.
