值得注意的是，门格尔学生的生平为这一原则提供了有力的例证。
1876年，门格尔被任命为王储鲁道夫的导师，鲁道夫是皇帝弗朗茨·约瑟夫（Franz Joseph）的独子，也是奥匈帝国的未来统治者。在共处的岁月里，门格尔让这位年轻王子接触了现代经济思想、政治哲学、历史以及那个时代的科学精神。鲁道夫成长为欧洲统治阶层中求知欲最强、最倾向改革的成员之一。他比父亲更自由派，对宪政改革更感兴趣，也更清醒地意识到这个庞大跨国帝国内部日益加剧的民族紧张局势。
许多同时代人认为鲁道夫代表着未来。弗朗茨·约瑟夫皇帝体现了19世纪君主制的传统，而鲁道夫似乎愿意使帝国现代化，使其适应不断变化的欧洲现实。随后，迈耶林悲剧降临。
1889年1月30日，鲁道夫与他年轻的伴侣玛丽·韦切拉男爵夫人（Baroness Mary Vetsera）被发现死于皇家狩猎行宫。这一事件究竟是单纯的自杀殉情还是更为复杂的内情，至今仍有争议。但可以肯定的是，王储之死震惊了整个欧洲，并从根本上改变了哈布斯堡王朝的未来。
