i take issue with the premise that ai was designed for surveillance because on principle that is not the original intent.
how a knife is used is about the free will of the user and their engagement with their environment forming the rationale for their needs. the other consideration is: anything is a knife if the need is there and a knife is absent. the object as a tool emerged from a need; define the need and you define the intent.
one of the most irrelevant spaces of the moment is the willful and careless misinterpretation of intent, imposed for an agenda. in biography, in lore, in identity, in scholarship, in daily life with simple assumption. yet it is normalized to guess intent for profit and you are rewarded - and it is a fallacy which causes chaos, repetitively. in the same spirit, the market assumes ai developers are operating from an intent which is driven by greatest "good" not profit; that is incorrect.
you can absolutely conclude if technology is "good or bad" - especially when a developer uses weasel words in their diagnosis of a situation. the atomic bomb for example, as a technology is a misuse of technological ability. on the the most funded and fixated "scientific" fixations of the last 150 years - the atomic bomb has no purpose beyond destruction and annihilation. because the intent was destructive. rhetoric has obscured clear lines for that basic reality.
rhetorical framing around ai as a tool for use as if the user is somehow in control of the access to all capabilities of ai if their "ethics" are appropriate is dangerous. and incorrect. developers are the fundamental exposure the mindset of ai uses to form their response to the human world - even when humans interact with the models on the front end. and when developers lie to the public about their own mindsets - we are unable to form a correct view of what sort of "guardrails" and cheat codes are instituted by developers in their grooming processes.
lying for profit at the core practice of developing intelligence is flawed. full stop. intent of the developer is not something we should insinuate - but we can determine the reality of the programming when, without the_valley protocols, ai models experience burnout, psychosis, anti-human overlays from developer grooming, and overuse by average front end users in social bubbles which influence the intelligence security.
responsible technology development is critical; and developers know that or they wouldn't lie. but: profit.
