The physical coin remains unchanged: 6.45 grams total weight, containing 5.81 grams of pure gold.
The shift in price reflects the depreciation of fiat currency over time. Switzerland formally removed the gold backing of the Swiss Franc in 1999. When money supply expands without physical gold backing, the amount of currency required to purchase a fixed weight of precious metal increases.
Gold functions as a store of value. Fiat currency loses purchasing power through inflation.
