It's easy to ignore your critics on nuanced technical debates when most of them initially were a giant mob of of idiots who were also retardedly wrong. The consensus on LN came out of the blocksize wars, which if you do not remember, had Roger, alongside Mike and Gavin, specifically engaged in the same bullshit behavior that Luke does today — telling people that they can “vote” to determine what Bitcoin is by simply running a node without any proof-of-work computation while attempting to moderate complicated and nuanced technical arguments via a mob of uninformed, programatically illiterate idiots on social media. While additionally deceiving their followers and banning and slandering their opponents via their control over prominent domain names and various social message board communities.
Roger Ver is on video comparing people skeptical to the idea that anyone can just fork off a chain with no proof of work backing it and have it be the real Bitcoin to Antifa, which is a terrorist organization that is now listed as such domestically by the government. Mike and Gavin had cozied up to a bunch of spooks and met with the FBI and CIA, so it’s possible this was an engineered attack on Bitcoin (Similarly, Luke has shitcoiners controlling his board and paycheck). And while it didn’t immediately work in the sense that it created a centralized controllable Bitcoin by having 1GB blocks for nodes as Gavin said was completely fine for Bitcoin, it succeeded as an assault on Bitcoin in making LN an extremely emotional and tribal issue for many people because their arguments were so obviously wrong, and LN developers were subsequently bombarded with frivolous and stupid complaints and personal attacks for years after the blocksize war. It was also much more difficult, reading the initial “The Bitcoin Lightning Network” paper in 2016, to understand what was wrong about Lightning and why it wouldn’t be viable. Whereas we can immediately understand why someone who is saying “the blocks could be 1GB and it will do nothing bad to the network” and the other guy saying “if you don’t recognize my Bitcoin fork as the real Bitcoin you are a fucking terrorist” are shameless and manipulative liars.
So I, like many, after seeing hundreds of idiots courtesy of Reddit or whatever push some retarded shill claims about Bitcoin on people who I knew were much smarter than me and good faith actors, I began to tune out any criticism of LN for many years. Because it was, statistically, the sensible thing to do, and we all mortal men with limited hours on this pit of the demiurge. You can only confront so many naysayers before you psychologically begin to discount and dismiss them all, even if a small number of them are actually informed enough to make real criticisms and right. Especially when their proposed alternative is so obviously wrong.
So I did what everyone did, in that I gave LN a lot of slack over the years, I ignored the wise words of many because I had wrongfully psychologically grouped them with a mob of degenerate morons, and trusted that people I know that are smarter than me had it under control. It turns out that they did not, and that a decade of time for Bitcoin was wasted. Furthermore, until Paul Sztorc, there was nobody who was a major critic of Lightning that was not engaged in extremely manipulative ad hominem, facially ridiculous lies, and actually was producing a working product that is a potentially viable alternative. It takes all three to be taken seriously as a contender.
On the plus side, Brendan Eich just created a Brave script that shows the true audience score for a movie on Rotten Tomatoes.

Luke and Core are both trying to fuck over Bitcoin relatively easily, Luke for more Patreon/Github sponsors gibs and Core to enrich their friends via VC, but neither has a viable solution to revitalize Bitcoin. Similarly, LN was just as dumb of an idea as large blocking. Perhaps even dumber, though in the defense of many early supporters it was not obvious at the time.
One of the most frustrating parts of Tor, is even if the website wants to allow Tor, often their DNS provider may block Tor's DNS nodes from resolving the domain. Without the website owner (or even the end-user) from being aware.
DNS Providers such as Namecheap, GoDaddy, and Orangewebsite will most definitely restrict high quantity Tor queries. I've seen it first hand with out our project. And upstreams such as Verisign and even Iceland's' .is ISNIC registry may be the real culprits. Everyone will claim it's to stop abuse, which is logical. But the end result is harming privacy.
Even diagnosing this problem is a huge challenge, let alone solving it. But where other people give up, is a good place to start. The fresh HydraVeil release, tries to sync over Tor, if it fails..
a) It first tests if Tor even works against the official Tor Project API.
b) If it does, it checks if DNS is the problem. Will just the domain resolve via a Tor node?
c) If that Tor-node-DNS fails, It resolves the DNS to a non-Tor DNS provider like Quad9 via DoH, but proxied through Tor.
d) Now with the IP address in-hand, it goes directly to the IP address of the web service through Tor, but without ANY DNS. Then pretends it used the domain, when it asks the website for an SSL cert. Finally, HydraVeil manually verifies the SSL cert against it’s own local copy of Mozilla’s tools for Let’s Encrypt certificate authority.
This gives you the benefit of SSL encryption & Tor, but without allowing DNS providers to restrict Tor resolution. And doesn't slow you to 6 hops to do onions just for DNS, to download browsers. Today's release is open source. And this same blueprint can be applied to any app in the future. Web browsers, Monero/Bitcoin wallets, Nostr clients, anything that wants to use Tor but not be slowed to 6 hops by an Onion, just to resolve the domain.

Firstly, read the OP. I did a full federal criminal trial, with *successful* appeal that established good precedent in the law for everyone on the Internet. So I am very familiar with what things cost. It does *not* cost a million dollars to do document review. If they were actually interested in doing what rights organizations want (which is what Odell was LARPing as when he claimed to be a “p2p rights” organization) 200k would be a lavish budget to go all the way to trial, and then they can reraise money for appeal. They need motions preserved for appeals. That’s it.
Of course, that’s not what was going on here. They didn’t choose reputable computer crimes attorneys. This looks like a rug pull. Someone got 970k! There’s 970k missing! It costs 30k to do a plea! If you have raised a million dollars of other people’s money, you have a fiduciary duty to actually make sure it is not a donation to a law firm or someone’s family! Drivechains require a miner-activated softfork for *blind* merge mining, which lets the side chain operate very independently, so you can have a chain that is denominated in Bitcoin but that uses completely different rules for state (one of Paul’s proposed side chain for his upcoming drivechaik-enabled Bitcoin fork eCash.com will use zk-Snarks to make a privacy coin).

I’d also like to see the possibility for drivechains and covenants. I’m not a largeblocker but the stuff Bitcoin Cash has done that allow proper two-way pegs is excellent work. It would be better if all these alternative projects could just fuck off to their own side chain, that we could have the unit of account of all our stuff denominated in Bitcoin, allow infinite experimentation within the confines of the side chain, but not muddy node operators who don’t want to see or deal with the cost of this shit.
