How do you go about hooking up someone with a Monero address? How would that even work? You expect someone to create a wallet for you and hand you the private key? KYC isn't about what happens to the coins afterwards. It's about a list showing you bought X amount of coins on Y date being tied to your real identity that governments and criminals will know (this info will leak eventually it always does - just search all crypto exchange data breaches for this year alone). You can't "unKYC" by coinjoining or swapping to Monero. Does nothing to erase that list.

Gold has constant inflation, was used as money, and has held it's value for thousands of years. Total gold supply is also not directly auditable by anyone. I think Monero will be ok.

Sidekick (Monerujo wallet) and Nero (Anonero wallet) are a couple others. Both work similarly to Cupcake.
There is also a Seedsigner fork called XMRSigner then forked again to MoneroSigner, but progress on that seems stalled. Not sure if it's abandoned or they're waiting until after FCMP upgrade to continue.

Yea admittedly the UX for this stuff isn't quite there yet if you're used to exchanges. Trocador might be the easiest, quickest, and cheapest to use among these, but you're trusting a single swap provider not to freeze your funds during the swap (although they rate the chance of that happening for each swap provider). Eigen is probably the most trustless method followed by bisq/retoswap/robosats (because it's a multisig so you're relying on cooperation from arbitrators if something happens). Never had a problem with any of them myself though.
Here is the latest news about Thorchain adding XMR from a few days ago. Basically they're hoping to get it out sometime in 2026 but it's privacy properties and multisig makes it a little more complicated than other blockchains to implement:

Both have confidential txs. Monero adds one time stealth addresses and ring signatures in addition to obscure the transaction graph (Liquid doesn't). Monero wins that hands down and soon to have full chain membership proofs to completely hide it. I don't think Liquid even has plans to improve privacy afaik.
Liquid daily transactions are significantly less so it's anonymity set is much smaller.
Liquid has no p2p market presence. Not really used anywhere.
Both have low fees.
Liquid requires permission from a federation to peg out.
All Liquid really has going is it's value peg to Bitcoin if you held for the long term (several years). But if I'm only holding and not using why not just hold actual Bitcoin? Short to medium term performance of Monero vs Bitcoin has been a toss up.

Spark still has certain issues around it the most obvious one being privacy. I'm hoping that will improve over time. It will always have different trade-offs to Monero because of it's architecture, but the trust assumptions seem an improvement over fully custodial Lightning without sacrificing UX
Technically Spark is a statechain, not Lightning, but that's abstracted away so that it feels indistinguishable. Been playing around with it and interacting with Lightning through Spark is actually pretty damn smooth so far ngl

Still, I could see how the fees and trust assumptions might be worth it for some users to avoid certain UX aspects of using Lightning directly when they're forced to use it.
I've seen others like @npub1g0a…gqpz mention how the Spark entity can collude with a user to steal from another. The privacy also doesnt seem very great atm. Though to be fair it seems better than on-chain Bitcoin or default Spark where your transactions are fully public.
Either way I wasn't making any recommendation with this just presenting a new development and people can delve further into the details themselves

Currently Spark privacy is pretty damn bad from what I understand and any improvements seem quite modest over custodial. If you value lower fees over quicker trades, I don't think there is really any other way besides making an offer and waiting. Seems like an inevitable trade-off. It hides amounts and addresses on-chain. A lot better privacy than the vast majority of blockchains, but it doesn't do anything to hide the transaction graph for an active adversary monitoring the mempool (which you would have to assume) like ring signatures, shielded zk, FCMP does
I don't think there are any plans to use MWEB on Bitcoin but it would be relatively trivial to implement since Litecoin has an almost identical codebase
MWs real strength is it's scalability via "cut-through" though. I think the whole history is like a few hundred MB. The privacy it offers is kind of secondary and a consequence of that. Really good privacy but not the best when compared to other stuff out there right now.
Imo if the goal is private transactions Bitcoin should adopt something like shielded pools on Zcash (which was pretty much made for Bitcoin). It would be roughly as easy to implement, superior privacy to MWEB, preserves the 21 million cap with turnstiles, and it's optional so those who don't trust it wouldn't have to touch it. Scalability is not nearly as good as MWEB though. Shielded client-side validation (Shielded CSV) is another good option from what i understand.

With private channels your counterparty can see your node pubkey, onchain UTXOs used to fund the channel, and it's balance. Same. This guy thinks I don't use Lightning. I'm just being upfront about the weaknesses. Neither Monero or Lightning is perfect and has their own pain points.
Off the top of my head routing is constrained by liquidity so it limits your potential paths to a destination instead of being chosen at random (ideal case for onion routing). The effect becomes more pronounced the larger the payment that you're sending. The more channels a node has on the network, and lower the fees, the more likely it is going to be chosen to be a hop on your route.
I already mentioned this but Lightning amounts aren't encrypted. MPP helps a lot for all this, but still reveals a lower bound and also isn't default for the network. More adoption of blinded paths would also help (preferably default). Something that affects both Tor and LN is that there is no mixing or dummy traffic/transactions which would make it even better from a privacy perspective. But I'm not sure if that is even possible on LN the way it is designed at least.

Even when using it perfectly onion routing has plenty of flaws. And there are many differences between how routing works on Tor vs Lightning that are detrimental to privacy. You can get defensive and pretend they don't exist if you want.

If you don't care about privacy weaknesses of something youre using, like others knowing your balance, nodes being able to see amounts passing through them, or the fact that merely 1% of nodes own 99% LN liquidity and the impliciations of that, you shouldn't care I guess

It is a trade-off for sure. Probably an unavoidable one.
In Moneros case increased transactions mean node runners pay (in storage and bandwidth cost -> affects decentralization) less people willing to run nodes. In Bitcoins case limited blocksize mean users of the network pay in transaction fees.
The way I look at it is if the network is too expensive to use those users aren't going to run a node anyway (who is going to run a node for a network they can't afford to use or don't use often?) which also affects decentralization. Both arguments are valid imo. Maybe there is a balance or a better solution will be discovered down the road.
And about Pubkey yea it's fairly small and I'm not on there often but think it has a lot of potential still. Maybe more people will use it once it isn't invite only anymore 😅

The blocksize grows or shrinks based on median number of transactions is pretty much the gist of it. There is a penalty against miners for increasing it too fast and a short, medium, and long term formula for how it works but that gets into the technical weeds.

Every node on a payment route can see amounts. Additionally, you must entrust the confidentiality of your funds to a third party (LSP) or counterparty (your channel peer). Not to mention the terrible interface and limitations when using it. Lightning and Monero will always have different compromises due to different architectures.

Fees will always remain relatively low on Monero because of dynamic blocksize. But I do think ecash has it's own unique benefits for a different use case like micro transactions, no public blockchain, instant and offline payments, etc

Bitcoin should adopt Zcash shielded pools. 21 million would be preserved on the transparent side with turnstiles and it's optional so if someone doesn't want to use shielded pools because they don't trust it they don't have to.

Probably timing and amount analysis
Pretty trivial for anyone monitoring the chain if they see for example 1.52334 BTC move once then shortly after another address moves the exact same amount minus fees. High likelihood it's the same user. There was a recent example of this with a Zcash whale moving from transparent address to shielded and back.
You can use Monero to break links, but it takes a bit more consideration than a simple swap back and forth (break into different amounts on the swap back, swap at different times, different IP addresses or Tor, etc)

Well this is Nostr...Lightning heavy environment. I don't think most would deny using Bitcoin it has it's advantages. There are some clients that support Monero but you wouldn't know if they were tipped (or tip) in Monero because it doesn't broadcast that over Nostr. I tip and get tipped Monero fairly often here.
