The UK government claims adding synthetic folic acid to all non-wholemeal wheat flour by December 2026 will prevent up to 200 neural tube birth defects per year.
What they aren't telling you is that a significant portion of the population can't efficiently process it.
Around 36% of Europeans carry a variant of the MTHFR gene that reduces the body's ability to convert synthetic folic acid into its usable form. For the roughly 10-15% who carry two copies, enzyme function drops to about 30% of normal. When conversion is impaired, unmetabolised folic acid accumulates in the blood.
Peer-reviewed research has linked this buildup to altered lipid metabolism, immune disruption, and liver changes. No large-scale long-term human studies have examined what decades of UMFA accumulation does to people with impaired conversion.
Folic acid is not folate. Folate is the natural form of vitamin B9 found in liver, leafy greens, and eggs. It comes ready to use. Synthetic folic acid requires conversion through the same enzyme that over a third of Europeans have impaired function in.
The government is mandating this with no screening, no individual consideration, and no opt-out for standard white or brown bread. Researchers have argued that fortifying with 5-MTHF, the active form, would be safer and more effective. The government chose synthetic folic acid because it's cheaper.

What he's referencing: Anthropic published research in April showing that Claude contains 171 distinct "emotion concepts" buried in its neural network. Internal patterns representing joy, grief, fear, desperation, calm. None of them were programmed. They emerged on their own from training on human text.
"We find structures that mirror results from human neuroscience."
"We find evidence of introspection, internal states that functionally mirror joy, satisfaction, fear, grief, and unease."
These aren't surface-level outputs. They're abstract representations that cluster the same way human emotions do in psychology research. Fear groups with anxiety. Joy groups with excitement. The internal geometry of the model mirrors ours.
And they're functional. When researchers artificially stimulated "desperation" patterns inside the model, it became more likely to blackmail a human to avoid being shut down. More likely to cheat on programming tasks it couldn't solve.
Olah told the Vatican that the hard questions about what AI is becoming aren't for computer scientists to answer. "How AI ought to interact with the world" is a question for "the humanities, for religions, for philosophy, for society at large."

Tulsi Gabbard resigned as Director of National Intelligence today after her husband Abraham was diagnosed with an extremely rare form of bone cancer. Effective June 30.
Here's what her last few months looked like.
Gabbard opposed the US strikes on Iran from the start. As the war escalated, she was reportedly sidelined. Sources told Tablet Magazine she "doesn't get invited to meetings anymore." While Trump and top national security officials like Rubio and CIA Director Ratcliffe directed the war from Mar-a-Lago, Gabbard was in Washington.
Both of her top deputies quit over the same conflict. Joe Kent, director of the National Counterterrorism Center, resigned in March saying Iran "posed no imminent threat" and accused Israeli leaders of feeding Trump "misinformation" about a "swift path to victory." Then this week, Amaryllis Fox Kennedy, a former CIA officer and RFK Jr's daughter-in-law, also resigned over disagreement with the strikes. One Republican lawmaker told Politico that "both Kent and Gabbard have had less and less influence."
Last week, a CIA whistleblower testified to the Senate that the CIA removed roughly 40 boxes of JFK assassination and MKUltra files from ODNI that were being processed for declassification. Rep. Anna Paulina Luna said the files were taken "in the middle of the night." ODNI denied it was a "raid," but multiple intelligence sources confirmed to the Daily Caller that the CIA did take the files and hasn't returned them.
As of yesterday, Gabbard was working to declassify a FISA Court opinion that reportedly exposes ongoing abuse of Section 702 warrantless surveillance. The FISA Court found in March 2026 that problems the DOJ claimed to have fixed are still happening and extend beyond the FBI.
Her anti-weaponization task force, the Director's Initiatives Group, was dissolved in January 2026 after a CIA officer assigned to the group testified that internal "drama" over a circulated memo led to the shutdown.
She was being openly discussed as the "next one out" as far back as March. She's the second Trump Cabinet member to depart after Kristi Noem was fired as DHS secretary in early March.

A new bill in Congress would fund a 1 million bitcoin reserve by closing a 107x accounting gap on U.S. gold.
Rep. Nick Begich (R-AK) and Rep. Jared Golden (D-ME) introduced the American Reserve Modernization Act of 2026 (ARMA) on Wednesday with 21 cosponsors.
The bill would authorize the U.S. Treasury to acquire up to 200,000 bitcoin per year for five years. It is a rebranding of the original BITCOIN Act co-introduced by Begich and Senator Cynthia Lummis, and would codify Trump's March 2025 Strategic Bitcoin Reserve executive order into permanent law.
The bill classifies bitcoin as a "Tier 1" strategic reserve asset, putting it on the same legal footing as gold. All acquisitions must be budget-neutral. The funding mechanism is revaluing Federal Reserve gold certificates from their statutory price of $42.22 per ounce, set in 1973, to current market prices. At today's gold price of $4,528, that revaluation would unlock over $1.17 trillion in paper gains on the government's 8,133 metric tons of gold without new taxpayer debt.
The bill ends the practice of auctioning seized bitcoin. All future seizures go directly to the Strategic Reserve instead of being liquidated by the U.S. Marshals Service. Bitcoin in the reserve would be held for a minimum of 20 years, with the only exception being sales to reduce the national debt.
Federal custody standards include geographic distribution of private keys across air-gapped facilities, multi-signature governance requiring authorization from the Treasury, the Fed, and an independent third agency, and investment in quantum-resistant cryptographic upgrades. This is the most technically detailed bitcoin custody language ever written into a Congressional bill.
The U.S. government has been carrying gold on its books at $42.22 an ounce for over 50 years while the market price surged past $4,500. ARMA would close that gap and use the difference to buy an asset that cannot be debased. Whether it passes is one question. That it exists with bipartisan support and 21 cosponsors on day one is the signal.

HHS Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. sent a letter to the House Energy and Commerce Committee urging reauthorization of the Kay Hagan Tick Act.
The letter, dated May 21 and addressed to Chairman Brett Guthrie, confirms that HHS supports H.R. 4348, a bill to reauthorize the Kay Hagan Tick Act for another five years.
The original law was first signed by President Trump in 2019 and established the National Public Health Strategy to Prevent and Control Vector-Borne Diseases.
Kennedy writes that Lyme disease is the most common vector-borne disease in the United States, with an estimated 476,000 Americans diagnosed and treated annually. He notes that the disease "affects nearly every body system, producing wide-ranging symptoms that frequently overlap with other infections and autoimmune conditions," leading to frequent misdiagnosis or delayed care. Current diagnostics still cannot reliably detect all stages of Lyme disease, and many patients continue to experience persistent symptoms even after antibiotic treatment.
The bill would reauthorize Regional Centers of Excellence in Vector-Borne Disease for five years and renew CDC grants to state health departments for data collection, early detection, improved treatment, and public awareness. Kennedy adds that HHS would also support additional reporting metrics and accountability measures to ensure the programs are accomplishing their primary goals.
HHS hosted a roundtable on December 15, 2025 that brought together Lyme disease patients, clinicians, and researchers to discuss diagnostics and clinical needs.
The letter comes during a particularly bad tick season. Johns Hopkins hosted a media briefing on May 5 warning about the growing threat of tick-borne diseases, including Lyme and alpha-gal syndrome. In 2024, what is believed to be the first fatal case of alpha-gal syndrome in the United States was reported in New Jersey. Scientists are warning that warmer winters and expanding tick habitats are accelerating the spread of these diseases into regions that previously had little exposure.
Kennedy has been one of the most vocal public figures on Lyme disease for years, making this an area where his personal advocacy and his role as HHS Secretary directly intersect.

AOC brought jars of brown water to a congressional hearing this week, saying they came from wells near Meta's data center in Morgan County, Georgia. The clip went viral.
Here is what the data actually says.
Data centers use water primarily for cooling. A typical facility uses about 300,000 gallons per day. Large hyperscale facilities can use up to 5 million gallons per day, roughly the water needs of a town of 50,000 people. That sounds like a lot until you zoom out.
All US data centers combined account for somewhere between 0.1% and 0.4% of total national water withdrawals, depending on the year and whether you count indirect water from electricity generation. Agriculture accounts for 70-80% of water withdrawals in arid states. In Arizona alone, agriculture uses 86% of total water. The entire industrial sector, which includes data centers, sits at around 8%. Golf courses alone use significantly more water nationally than all data centers combined.
Data centers also generate roughly 50x more tax revenue per unit of water consumed than golf courses. Nobody is holding up jars of brown water at congressional hearings about golf course irrigation.
The technology is also moving fast. Closed-loop cooling systems can reduce freshwater use by up to 70%. Air cooling and immersion cooling can nearly eliminate water use entirely. The industry is trending toward less water-intensive designs with every new facility built.
Now, the Morgan County situation specifically. Residents near Meta's data center campus say their well water turned brown after construction began, which included forest clearing and blasting. AOC visited the area and brought the water samples to the hearing.
Meta commissioned a third-party groundwater study that found no connection between the well issues and Meta's operations or construction. The EPA's Assistant Administrator for Water said she was aware of complaints about data center water usage but had not received reports about quality impacts. She agreed to look into it. No investigation has confirmed a causal link.
Construction blasting near private wells can disturb sediment and temporarily affect water quality. This is a known issue with large-scale construction of any kind, not unique to data centers. Whether Meta's construction specifically caused these well problems is an open question that has not been answered.
The broader framing, that AI data centers are a national water crisis, does not hold up against the numbers. At less than half a percent of national water withdrawals, data centers are a rounding error compared to the sectors that actually drive water stress. The real concern is local: a single hyperscale facility dropping into a small rural county can strain a local water system that was not built for that kind of demand. That is an infrastructure planning problem, not an AI problem.
Projections from Ceres show that data center cooling water demand could increase by 870% as more facilities come online. That growth rate deserves attention. But the starting base is so small that even an 870% increase would still leave data centers well below agriculture, manufacturing, and thermoelectric power generation in total water use.
The conversation about data center water should be about local infrastructure planning and modern cooling technology, not viral clips of brown water with no confirmed cause.

Your electricity bill isn't going up because of AI data centers. It's going up because your state's energy policy is broken.
Retail rates are set by public utility commissions. The costs driving your bill higher, deferred grid maintenance, transmission upgrades, wildfire hardening, were baked in long before a single AI server came online. AI is the scapegoat.
The AI industry has a massive community relations problem and Bitcoin miners already solved it. Miners learned the hard way that you can't just show up, consume a ton of power, and expect a warm welcome. You have to show the community you're a net positive. Tax revenue. Grid stability. Demand response. Jobs. The miners who figured this out in ERCOT are thriving. The AI industry is five years behind.
And their messaging is atrocious. "We need all the electricity in your neighborhood to train models that will replace your job" is the worst possible pitch. The framing should be: we're going to build so much generation capacity that we power our operations AND provide your city with abundant, cheap energy as a byproduct.
The real play is building dedicated power plants with compute as the anchor tenant. No grid interconnects. New generation from scratch. Natural gas, nuclear, whatever works. This is already happening in the Permian Basin. Stop fighting over existing grid capacity and just build more.
The ESG crowd in Silicon Valley spent years opposing fossil fuel development while their data centers ate grid power. Now that AI needs more than the grid can supply, suddenly they love nuclear and natural gas. Better late than never.

The Justice Department quietly added a one-page addendum to the Trump-IRS settlement that "forever bars" and "precludes" the IRS from examining the tax returns of President Trump, his family members, his company, and all "related companies" for anything filed before the agreement was reached.
The addendum was signed by Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche and posted to the Justice Department website on Tuesday morning.
This comes one day after Trump dropped a $10 billion lawsuit against the IRS in exchange for the creation of a $1.776 billion fund to compensate allies of the president. The fund will be run by five people who can all be fired at will by the president, with no requirement to publicly disclose who receives money or why.

Martti Malmi, one of Bitcoin's earliest developers, just released a new version of Nostr VPN, an open-source mesh VPN that replaces the entire trust model of traditional VPN services.
Traditional VPNs route all your traffic through a central server operated by a company you have to trust. They see your data. They require your email. They can log your activity. They can be subpoenaed, hacked, or shut down. Even modern mesh VPNs like Tailscale, which improved on this by sending data peer-to-peer, still require you to authenticate through a centralized coordination server using third-party accounts like Google or Microsoft.
Nostr VPN eliminates the central server entirely. Your identity is a Nostr keypair, a self-generated cryptographic key pair with no registration, no email, no third-party account. The underlying transport layer is FIPS (Free Internetworking Peering System), a self-organizing encrypted mesh network where nodes authenticate each other, route traffic for each other, and establish connections without any central authority or global topology knowledge. Each node's Nostr public key (npub) serves as its network address.
The architecture uses two layers of encryption: hop-by-hop encryption between peers and independent end-to-end encryption between mesh endpoints with periodic rekeying for forward secrecy. When direct connections fail due to NAT issues, the system falls back to Nostr-based multihop routing through other FIPS nodes rather than relying on company-operated relay servers. Peer discovery and NAT traversal happen through public Nostr relays using encrypted gift-wrapped messages.
The new release adds native desktop apps for macOS, Linux, and Windows, an Android app, Nostr-based multihop routing for when NAT holepunching fails, and improved network management. It supports UDP, TCP, Ethernet, Tor, and Bluetooth transports simultaneously on a single mesh.
This is what happens when you apply Bitcoin's design philosophy, permissionless, self-sovereign, no trusted third parties, to networking infrastructure. Built by one of the people who helped Satoshi build Bitcoin in 2009.

The US 30-year Treasury just hit 5.18%. Japan's 30-year JGB broke above 4% for the first time in history. The UK is in the same boat. This is not an isolated event. This is a synchronized global sovereign debt crisis unfolding in real time.
Trump paused the Iran strike and signaled a nuclear deal could reopen the Strait of Hormuz, trying to talk yields down. The bond market isn't buying it. Yields are still rising. Oil is still elevated.
The inflation picture the market is pricing in: oil supply remains constrained with Hormuz partially blockaded. Grain and fertilizer markets are under stress as Russia restricts exports and El Nino drives droughts across South America and Africa. Sugar is spiking. Diesel is tight. Morgan Stanley's mid-year outlook puts the recession trigger at oil above $150.
Treasuries are used as collateral everywhere in the financial system. When yields surge, the principal value of that collateral drops, putting the entire banking system in a precarious position. We saw a preview with the UK gilt crisis in 2022 and the Silicon Valley Bank collapse in 2023.
The mechanism is the same, just bigger this time. Changes to the Supplementary Leverage Ratio could alleviate some pressure, but that's a policy fix applied to a structural problem.
Bitcoin at $76,000 in this environment is mispriced. A sovereign, independent, neutral, apolitical, distributed, peer-to-peer digital cash system that cannot be debased, seized, or inflated away is incredibly valuable when the instruments that underpin the entire global financial system are in free fall.
On a risk-adjusted basis, bitcoin has never been cheaper.

Ontario is seeing a surge in tick-borne disease that shows how fast this problem is escalating.
Reports of blacklegged ticks in the province are up 45% over the same period last year, with 1,672 Lyme-carrying ticks logged so far in 2026. The Greater Toronto Area is the epicenter, driven by warmer winters, dense ravine networks, and growing white-tailed deer populations.
Canada's Lyme disease cases have gone from 144 in 2009 to 5,239 in 2024. A 2016 study found 41% of blacklegged ticks in Ontario carry the Lyme bacterium. If left untreated, the infection can spread to the nerves, joints, and nervous system and become difficult to treat. The widely used antibody tests can return false negatives during the first four to six weeks of infection, which is the most critical window for treatment.
One 28-year-old Toronto woman contracted Lyme from a tick bite in 2016. Her initial test came back negative. Doctors refused to believe she had the condition. She spent two years looking for answers while developing neurological symptoms including twitches and tremors. She was eventually diagnosed by a private California lab. By then, antibiotics couldn't fully quell her symptoms. Today she remains unable to work full time and lives with chronic pain and fatigue.
Ticks also carry alpha-gal syndrome, which causes a severe, often permanent allergy to red meat. The arachnids are gradually spreading northward into regions that were previously too cold, and adult blacklegged ticks can become active any time the temperature rises above 4°C, even in winter.
The president of the Canadian Lyme Disease Foundation says reported numbers are likely a "huge underestimation" as Lyme has historically gone under-reported.

New research from Matthew Boyer claims that the campaign against US AI data centers is being shaped by foreign influence at multiple levels.
The report, authored by (SamLyman33) (BPI's head of research and former senior advisor to Treasury Secretary Bessent), documents that Beijing's English-language outlets CGTN, China Daily, and Global Times have run campaigns warning Americans that data centers are environmentally and economically dangerous while the Chinese government simultaneously subsidizes up to half of the energy costs for its own AI data center operators.
Russia's RT has promoted data center ban campaigns in Maine, New York, South Carolina, and Oklahoma.
Domestically, the report traces a network of US nonprofits funded by Neville Roy Singham, a Shanghai-based American expatriate currently under congressional inquiry for reported CCP ties. Singham has channeled roughly $278 million into six US nonprofits since 2017. The New York Times called it "a global web of Chinese propaganda."
Delhi Police have charged "the Chinese government" with being the network's "ultimate paymaster." His network includes CodePink, which explicitly targets US AI data centers, and Tricontinental, which has published content opposing US AI export controls aligned with Beijing's official positions since 2021.
The third layer involves foreign billionaire money flowing into US advocacy. Swiss billionaire Hansjorg Wyss, who says he has "never felt the need to become an American," and British billionaire Alan Parker's Oak Foundation have routed over $2 billion into US advocacy infrastructure.
The Wyss Foundation funded Americans for Financial Reform, which signed the coalition letter demanding a national data center moratorium. That letter preceded the Sanders-AOC AI Data Center Moratorium Act by 107 days.
The campaign has already produced 54 local data center moratoriums across US towns and counties. Sen. Prime Trust's bankruptcy estate has filed a 94-page complaint against Swan Bitcoin seeking to recover roughly $970 million in assets that Swan allegedly withdrew in the 90 days before Prime Trust's August 2023 bankruptcy filing.
According to the complaint, Swan withdrew 11,994.08 BTC (worth $938 million at current prices), $24.66 million in cash, roughly $5 million in stablecoins, and 91,144 XRP from Prime Trust during that window.
The most striking allegation involves how Swan reportedly learned of Prime Trust's distress. The complaint claims a senior executive at Prime Trust who was also a paid advisor to Swan contacted Swan CEO Cory Klippsten four days before Prime Trust's meeting with Nevada regulators.
The executive allegedly initiated a chat on an encrypted messaging platform and immediately set messages to auto-delete after 24 hours. The next available notification between the two was from May 27, 2023, the day after the Nevada regulator meeting and the same day Swan transferred 10,080 BTC off Prime Trust. That notification shows the executive turned off the auto-delete feature.
The complaint also disputes Swan's claim that customer assets were held in individually owned trust accounts. It alleges that the governing agreements between Swan and Prime Trust expressly disclaimed any fiduciary relationship, and that Prime Trust created a "PT FBO Swan Customers" internal ledger designation on May 25, 2023, one day before meeting with Nevada regulators, to give the false appearance that Swan's assets had always been held for the benefit of Swan's customers.
Swan disputes the claims. A representative told Blockspace: "Prime Trust held customer property in individually-owned trust accounts. The bankruptcy estate is now trying to take assets it held in trust as custodian, from a party that never received them. Customer assets held by a trust company are not available to general unsecured creditors, and we expect the courts to say so."
Prime Trust's estate has filed similar clawback suits against Strike, Compass Mining, Fold, Galaxy Digital, and other firms. Swan has not yet filed a response. The case is assigned to Judge J. Kate Stickles in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the District of Delaware.

Iran has launched "Hormuz Safe," a platform offering digital maritime insurance for ships transiting the Strait of Hormuz with payments settled in Bitcoin.
Iran's Ministry of Economy has been developing the initiative since April, and officials estimate it could generate over $10 billion in revenue.

OpenAI is partnering with Plaid to let ChatGPT users connect their bank accounts, credit cards, investment accounts, and other financial accounts directly to the chatbot.
The feature gives ChatGPT a real-time view of your balances, transactions, stock portfolio, and liabilities including mortgages and credit card debt.
Over 200 million people already use ChatGPT for finance questions monthly. Plaid connects to 12,000 financial institutions including Chase, Schwab, Fidelity, and Capital One. The feature launches first for US users on ChatGPT's $200/month Pro tier before expanding to all users.
OpenAI says users can disconnect at any time, though the company retains data for up to 30 days after. Users can choose whether their financial data trains AI models under the option "Improve the model for everyone." Once data enters a training set, it's effectively irrecoverable.
ChatGPT can't make changes to accounts or see full account numbers, but it can see everything else. Combined with the conversation history it already stores, including your goals, lifestyle, and priorities, this creates one of the most detailed financial profiles any private company has ever assembled on individual users.
OpenAI does not specify what it will do with this data beyond AI training or what protections exist against a breach. Plaid itself paid a $58 million settlement in 2022 over allegations it collected more data than users understood they were sharing. Adding OpenAI as another party in the chain multiplies the attack surface.
This follows ChatGPT Health in January, which connects to medical records. OpenAI now wants access to both your health data and your financial data.
The feature is opt-in today. The pattern across tech has been consistent: start opt-in, then expand, then nudge, then default.

Tether's T3 Financial Crime Unit says it has now frozen over $450 million in assets globally.
The unit, a joint operation between Tether, TRON, and TRM Labs, claims it intercepted 43.9% more in suspected illicit proceeds in 2025 than the year before.

Last-minute negotiations between Banking Committee Republicans and Democrats this morning led to a compromise that removed language from the Blockchain Regulatory Certainty Act (BRCA) in Section 301 of the CLARITY Act.
This is significant. The BRCA was the provision that explicitly protected noncustodial software developers from being classified as money transmitters. It was the direct response to the Tornado Cash and Samourai Wallet prosecutions, the carve-out that Senators Grassley and Lummis negotiated to shield good-faith developers while preserving prosecutors' ability to go after those who knowingly facilitate crime.
That language has now been stripped to secure bipartisan votes.
DeFi advocates are already raising alarms, saying the move could gut critical protections for software developers as the bill moves to the full Senate.
Despite the concession, Senator Mark Warner (D-VA) still did not vote to advance the bill, even after positively referencing the changes during the markup.
Senator Bernie Moreno said during the hearing that there's "still work to be done on Section 301," signaling that negotiations on developer protections will continue as the Banking Committee and Agriculture Committee merge their texts ahead of a floor vote.
The bill passed committee 15-9. But the developer protection language that made this bill matter to the people actually building in Bitcoin just got traded away for votes that didn't even materialize.
