While it may be true that Russia and China are autocratic, that doesn't make your Western countries any better. You have groupthink, mass surveillance, legal and judicial overreach of which journalists are often victims ( a better honor than a Pulitzer ), persecution of whistleblowers, media consolidation, deplatforming and algorithmic bias, support for authoritarian allies ( Israel, for example ), lobbying and campaign finance, policing of protests, forced neo-colonialism on other countries, and so on.
I'm an African living in Africa who thinks for himself. I hate to read or listen to people who try to give lessons to others while living in a glass house. Others have autocracies, you have cabals.

A post by David Hundeyin on X about Bola Ahmed Tinubu ( President of Nigeria ) affiliation with US 3 letters agencies. A clear case of neo-colonialism:
Yesterday in federal court, the CIA, FBI, and DEA filed a memorandum opposing our motion for summary judgment in the FOIA disclosure case about President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s drug trafficking investigation records, where we are seeking to have the redactions removed from the (partially released) files.
In the filing, the CIA effectively confirmed that Nigeria's sitting president is an active CIA asset. An excerpt from the CIA filing reads:
"Human sources can be expected to furnish information to the CIA only when they are confident the CIA can and will do everything in its power to prevent the public disclosure of their cooperation. In the case of a person who has been cooperating with the CIA, official confirmation of that cooperation could cause the targets to take retaliatory action against that person or against their family or friends. It also places in jeopardy every individual with whom the cooperating individual has had contact. Thus, the indiscretion of one source in a chain of intelligence sources can damage an entire spectrum of sources. As such, confirming or denying the existence of records on a particular foreign national, like Tinubu, reasonably could be expected to cause damage to U.S. national security by indicating whether or not the CIA maintained any human intelligence sources related to Tinubu, and identifying any access or lack of access any such sources had to intelligence concerning him."
And if that wasn't bad enough, the DEA's filing included a paragraph that literally said: "We oppose full, unredacted disclosure of the DEA's Bola Tinubu heroin trafficking investigation records because we believe that while Nigerians have a right to be informed about what their government is up to, they do not have a right to know what their president is up to."
At this point, I think there is nothing more to be said about the direct role that the US government plays in ensuring that Africa is constantly destabilised and afflicted with terrible leaders who create poverty and devastation.

I've never seen a more incisive and withering critique of western culture, and I probably never will. It's such an accurate statement and paints such a clear picture of what this civilization is really like that it's hard to imagine how anyone could possibly top it.
There are no real heroes with popular support in the western empire, because everything that's truly heroic gets stomped down here, and everything that gets amplified to popularity is either vapid distraction or directly facilitates the interests of the evil empire.
Our own generals are busy butchering civilians for oil and geostrategic control.
Our military personnel are imperial stormtroopers.
Our police are the security guards of capitalism.
Our most prominent journalists are all propagandists.
Our most prominent celebrities are famous because of their ability to pretend to be fictional characters doing fake things in Hollywood movies.
Our most prominent artists are famous for their ability to churn out formulaic pop songs about empty-headed bullshit.
Our most widely recognized symbols are corporate logos.
Our most highly regarded professionals are those who can sell westerners the most future landfill manufactured by wage slaves in the global south.
Our most well-known government leaders are those who've sold their souls to oligarchs and imperialists and can lie to the public most convincingly.
The only westerners doing truly heroic things here get thrown in prison, or murdered, or pushed into obscurity, because the only truly heroic thing anyone can do in today's world is to take a stand against the western empire.
Those who bravely resist the US war machine or make themselves inconvenient for the rulers of the western empire don't get to become popular heroes. You don't see the westerners who work to stop weapons shipments to Gaza being celebrated for their efforts on CNN and the BBC. You don't see antiwar activists getting Hollywood movies made about their work — at least not until the wars they were protesting lie safely in the distant past. You don't see journalists who work to expose the most egregious crimes of the empire being elevated to fame and fortune.
The only figures who get elevated to fame and fortune in this fake plastic dystopia are those who either actively serve the interests of the empire or who passively distract people from its abuses. Donald Trump. The Kardashians. Taylor Swift. Spider-Man and SpongeBob.
Those are the only heroes we're allowed to have here in any major way. You can have real heroes if you want, but if you tell the average westerner their names the first word out of their mouth will be, "Who?"
Every once in a great while someone will sneak past the many security checkpoints into fame and begin opposing the empire, but they are always quickly demonized and marginalized by the imperial perception managers. And for every Roger Waters or Susan Sarandon, there are a thousand imposter heroes making themselves extremely convenient for the rulers of the western empire.
This is the civilization we live in. A mind-controlled wasteland where everything is fake and stupid. The only path toward fulfillment and inner peace in such a dystopia is to dedicate yourself to tearing it down, brick by plastic brick.

I understand your concern, and it's valid. However, I don't entirely agree. A lot of what he says seems logically sound. Personally, I can't imagine ever using a closed-source OS again. As an African living in Africa, I see iPhone and the likes of Huawei as two sides of the same coin... Interests can vary based on the context.

I've been following this man for years. He's knowledgeable about a wide range of software and hardware and still does. Are you suggesting he's created his own alternatives to all of these? I've never heard him criticize open-source systems unless they have legitimate flaws, like Linux phones. He's often mentioned various AOSP alternatives, not just the one he sells. And speaking of that, anyone could theoretically do what he's done with his Android system and phones, which is why I've never felt the need to buy it.

Yeah, having the latest Google Pixel 9 with GrapheneOS definitely gives you a different experience. The chip and camera are improved over the previous models, which can make a noticeable difference. But you're right—GrapheneOS lets you do everything you'd do on any other Android phone, with the bonus of enhanced security and privacy. The AI features are only available within the stock OS though.
