Slight tangent here, but I am reminded of a voxel based game (I wish I remembered which one it was because it looked kind of fun) that had a thing where you could spawn a black hole and watch the entire landscape get sucked into it.
I was a neat demo, and I understand why they put it in there, but there one one problem. No, not the fact that a black hole would just "hover" over the San Francisco Bay (although that in itself was problematic).

The level of effort you're describing here is... not really all that extraordinary. Repetitive and possibly a bit annoying? Sure, but I'm not really seeing what's insurmountable about it. Plenty of projects in life will take up a chunk of your time. That just... life.

I do respect the work of privacy advocacy, but there is a peculiar strain of cargo cultism that runs through the profession. I see advice given out like "delete your old posts after six months" as if this were some sort of magic bullet solution.
The Internet is not a Dark Forest. If you publish something, it's a safe bet that whatever it was you put out there is going to live forever on a server somewhere. Deleting it locally does nothing to protect you.

In the early 80s, IBM and Microsoft worked together *extensively* to corner the home PC market to the point where they were routinely called a duopoly. Microsoft as we know it today would not have existed without its early partnership with IBM that lasted until the mid-nineties.

Remember when "thin clients" were all the rage? That was supposed to be the Holy Grail of distributed computing going back to the *1970s*.
Microsoft and IBM threw that vision under the bus by making personal home computers nearly ubiquitous, which were thick clients by definition. We assumed the matter was settled and that the marketplace has decided that was going to be how things were going to be forever more

Moore's Law stalled out for a couple of decades, sure. What I'm saying is that it's going *in reverse* now. The AI data center boom is eating up all the high end hardware components and is starting to slurp up the lower end stuff too as supplies dwindle.
We'll be lucky to get the scraps the way things are heading.

It's going to be interesting how developers handle Moore's Law go into reverse gear. While I'd like to think this would usher in a new golden age of lean development using limited resources like in the days of old, it's more likely that people will just shift to cloud computing, blissfully ignoring the fact that it's hard to access the cloud when you don't have access to a cheap personal computing device.

I remember watching Johnny Nmemonic and reading William Gibson. They depicted dystopian futures where computer parts were rare and valuable and people hoarded disk drives like they were going out of style. I also remember how years later we laughed and laughed because it turned out memory had become cheap and ubiquitous. If your SSL certificate expires, *please* get that fixed ASAP. It not only prevents people from using your website very easily, it also breaks federation. Server logs get clogged up with SSL errors and other admins need to purge accounts or servers from their follower/following lists to clean those up. Please be proactive. Now, I said he'll remain President. This assumes he's still around then, but remember even though he's of failing health he still has access to the most advanced health care in the world. As long as his heart still beats he's going to remain in that position. There won't be a 25th Amendment solution. He's already half asleep and drooling through his press conferences. Even if the worst of the allegations against him turn out to be true, Republicans will refuse to do anything about it, and the "roll over and play dead" Democratic leadership will continue... rolling over and playing dead.
2026 will happen and the GOP will get absolutely crushed in the midterms.
He'll probably get impeached for a 3rd, maybe 4th time. But without the votes to remove from office, he'll remain President until 2029.

PeerTube actually does broadcast a federated message when you go live, but the problem is that Mastodon doesn't acknowledge it since it's not the right kind of "message" (it's an update message rather than a publish message).

For me, I'm about having fun as long as I have the resources to do what I want to do. Chasing fame and fortune through the hustle game is a losing proposition. The key to success isn't the grind; it's luck and a advantageous starting position. I'm not going to join a platform to get "access" to a wider audience. I don't regret moving to Mastodon. In that time I've spread to other federated platforms. I stopped streaming to Twitch and have an Owncast server. I still have a YouTube account but my content is uploaded to PeerTube. I'd like to expand to additional platforms but the only thing holding me back is a desire not to spread myself too thin. I've got enough on my plate and I think, at least for now, I'm happy with my online presence.
And Bluesky? Well, they can keep it.

I'm not on Bluesky but I can see what's going there since their posts are (mostly) publicly available on the internet and the whole site is definitely having "pre-2022 Twitter" vibes going on right now.
Moderation issues, Nazis polluting the platform with little blowback from the people running the platform, the constant backbiting. It's, well, familiar. It's basically Twitter in the months before Elon bought it.

Now Twitter had issues even before it got turned into "X" or whatever it is now. Honestly I was already kind of on my way out, and Musk's buyout only served to firm up my decision to leave that platform. I was already on Mastodon dot technology before I moved to my own self-hosted instance (that server had shut down for reasons unrelated to the Twitter diaspora).
Now, as to the people who joined in 2022, said "this sucks", and all left for bluer skies? Well, they are having a moment now.

Two other platforms emerged, however: Threads (Facebook) and Bluesky. Bluesky was notable because its founding members were some of the same people who used to run Twitter, including Jack Dorsey himself! A lot of the people who did try out Mastodon eventually either returned to Twitter or joined one/both of those two platforms.
Mastodon still retained a fair number of the Twitter diaspora however, and to this day enjoys a larger user count that it would have if Elon hadn't bought Twitter.

So back in 2022 there was this huge influx of users from Twitter into the #fediverse and it was, well, a bit of a shitshow. The #Mastodon servers that were set up to handle maybe hundreds (at most) of users suddenly swelled up tenfold and the platform nearly collapsed. Large instances did in fact disappear. There was chaos from having all those users who were expecting a perfect Twitter-like experience after leaving that platform and were left disappointed and disillusioned.

So, hopefully good news?
The scraping activity on my PeerTube instance has stopped for now. I did take some mitigation efforts to make it harder for them and that appears to have worked? I might not have to resort to drastic measures after all.
I still plan on archiving my old VODs though. I keep them around for no less than 3 months and I have not done a purge in over 9, so I'm a bit overdue.

Ok, weird time to announce this, but I have to.
This weekend I'll be taking down my #PeerTube instance for maintenance. I've come under attack by content scrapers, and must take some mitigation efforts to keep them from hitting my network usage cap this month.
So far it's more of a nuisance than anything but I have to take some sort of action before it gets worse. Hopefully the outage will be brief and be barely noticeable.

The same tomatoes, post-peel. That took about 2 hours. Next, we move in to the canning process. The jars are already warmed up.
One tablespoon of lemon juice guess into each pint. Two tablespoons for the quarts. The pints will be going into the electric camera while the quarts will go into the stovetop.

One thing worth looking into is seeing if the case is reusable. Get a new motherboard, some fans, a CPU and new peripherals. Air flow might be an issue, and if it was built to proprietary specs new mb's might not even fit in there, but who knows?
New computers do not come with optical disk bays anymore which is a shame.

I can view the video if it's private, but when I try to mark it as public, the video just hangs there and refuses to play. I have no idea what's going on because it's never done this before.
