journalists (but many others too) want a network with huge democratic reach where everyone they care about can talk to each other. open networks facilitate this if we work to let people only see what they want (no ads, corp algos, mod for unwanted mentions) and no node can block user visibility for much of the network

Some people still make apps tied solely to their content. The worst example in my experience is internet radio but apparently #newsmast is trying to make this a selling point re reading articles.

The #WHCA dinner could be awesome. I love the idea of electeds having to deal with a room full of adversarial journalists, with all of it getting out to the public unedited. Add in lots of talk of our great ideals and comics exposing where the nation falls short. Then have other celebrities wandering around in order to get more of the public to pay attention.
That's kinda my dream of a perfect party. Where the small talk is instead about important issues and political philosophy.

I'd love to know what you think about the AT vs AP systems. I find the PDS idea awesome but hate the app view, that it seems designed to ensure a quite centralized experience. what the tech might enable vs how it will actually play out. AT developers seem to think they will run a service on the network and get rich while AP developers want to make a new thing possible and imagine endless implementations. maybe I'm too cynical.

I'm very glad that tool exists but so many of those servers are tiny and full of users with very eccentric opinions. just counting them up can make you think it's worse than it is.
the blocks that bother me are democracy dot town, hachyderm dot io and mastodon dot art. I feel like those have impacted me. people I want to follow on them or people I know who use them. and they are bigger AFAIK.

maybe you're not completely serious, but this kind of thing is an issue here. I know many don't care about growth but that's obviously deterred when potential newbies expect their ability to federate requires quite close agreement on politics etc. imagine trying to get people to move from AOL to the web if browsing was so tightly controlled. of course unwanted tagging should be policed harshly, but that's like email spam. rarely stumbling on stuff you don't like is life on the web.

Our "paying for media" system is broken because it doesn't keep up with what is recommended to us via social media.
You can pay a lot of money for lots of services and still not be able to check out the cool new thing all your friends are suddenly talking about. Or still have to sit through ads when you'd rather just pay them directly.
So both fans and artists get screwed while executives cash in. A world of indie creators where the money still goes to big corporations.

I disagree. The only servers that should be blocked are those that fail to address their users who engage in unwanted tagging. That's harassment/abuse. It drives away users. I could support a list of servers somehow so verified.
But to go further than this is a kind of censorship of content allowed elsewhere on the web. Stuff we basically never stumble on while browsing. Without algos here, it will never be forced on us.
I can easily see posts critical of Israel called antisemitic.

I believe he addressed these concerns under the sections titled "The Flywheel" and "The Gmail Problem". new apps still end up giving more users to bluesky. and the protocol is designed in such a way that centralization is encouraged.
under "The Chokepoints", he acknowledges you're correct ala blacksky. but that's a huge ask. but they're not fully independent yet and it's hard to believe most would ever be happy with the alts' functionality if bluesky went full adversary re them.

Great article but I don't think we'll have a moment where #bluesky is sold or most people agree that they've gone evil. That's why just having an exit isn't enough. For that to work, most of the people you want to connect to have to agree quickly. Or when many start to leave, the original network can't turn off federation and lock-in the majority who haven't left yet.

the fedi kinda relies on having a small network of trust and not having to care about the trustworthiness of those outside of that. jerks can be on the network and it doesn't affect me as long as I don't follow them or anybody that boosts their jerky posts and there's a system to keep them from being able to harass me.
we lock down the network unnecessarily when we extend trust too far. a block might be personal etc.

#Israel told #YouTube to stop streaming #AlJazeera in the country and #Google complied. Maybe they didn't want to, but they're a business who could easily be punished for not complying.
But media is not like selling widgets. Info, opinions and art change societies. A diversity of journalism is required to do civics.
That's why it must be decentralized. Separate pieces become defensible in their own right, forcing them to justify limiting access to their people directly.

The decentralized social media movement chose the path of reboot with #bluesky. Roll out a new protocol capable of decentralization but not decentralized yet...so normies would know where to join, search could be simple and there wouldn't be different implementations leading to stuff not working perfectly.

except that people who saw how ICE was planning to approach deportation saw this happening before the protests. how they were planning to do things that libertarians have said go too far forever. papers please etc. I was told that if the government ever tried this, we had the 2A and conservatives would stop them. that violence in the streets would be appropriate to save the country. instead we get non violent but aggressive resistance by moms and the big men say they deserve to get shot.

I guess we could say those sites are problems too but that reality is not something people usually complain about, except maybe when some wanted to scare us off the web in the 90s. it was a trade-off for letting people create their own sites. this moderation approach lets us share a social network with people we don't agree with 100%.

that sounds great but just like people have different interests based on experience and who we are, nations do too. democracy works because while we're pulling in different directions, nobody has more power than another. and overwhelming force is rested in a power above any of us.
the problem at the international level is we haven't done this yet. the US talks about respecting everyone (usually) but can mostly act as it wishes. same with other local big powers.

I'd love an in-depth analysis about what this means. what would a full app view cost to run? doesn't the entire advantage of AT over AP break down if your app view can't see everything on the network quickly? what does Rudy mean by this forking the timeline? my guess is that the future of the network will be "see we're decentralized" while the only service that works well (and everybody uses) will be the bluesky app view, allowing them to impose costs similar to centralized platforms.

From the perspective of the fedi, both #bluesky and #threads are like HUGE FEDI SERVERS. this makes disconnecting from them tough because you're giving up the connection (imperfect as it is) to a lot of people. I don't recommend it. but their size also makes moderation difficult. if they had lots of users who harassed us here, moderating all that would be impossible and I would recommend disconnecting. it's all just constant reminders of why real decentralization matters.

I think I agree but we're coming to different conclusions re blocking bluesky so obviously not. if connecting to bluesky would mean that they force me to see lots of stuff I didn't ask for, I'd oppose connecting to them. like I do troll servers here. but until accounts there tag me often, this isn't an issue. Decentralized text, audio and video needs some way to get attention. That's what the early web gave us but we still relied on TV etc to know what sites existed etc. Even what to search for. Social media fixed that but became the new gatekeepers. Decentralized social media displaces them.
The social news feed (microblogging but that's a bad term) goes together with blogs, podcasts, #peertube etc like chocolate and peanut butter. They are not the same but need each other to be really awesome.

you want to be left alone so you think everybody wants that. sure lefties may want more help so they think everybody wants that. instead we have to understand different people want different things for their own good reasons and build a civics where those desires can impact the compromises we make to build the best possible society for all.

Is there a list of all the videos on the stream somewhere?
I asked a number of #ccmusic artists to submit videos and some emailed me back to say they were interested. Not sure what their status is tho. They are not on the fedi but I'm hoping to change that with a #bandwagon instance set up for them.

with other PDS hosts, lots of app views and alternative relays...is there now a way for someone to reconnect to most of the ATmosphere even if bluesky the company bans you.
(I sometimes get marked as spam by the company for asking people to bridge here. shouldn't somebody outside the company be doing that?)

but that's not what I said. I'm a lefty who wants to help poor whites and minorities. it's generally conservatives who want us to believe that these groups must fight each other for limited resources.

you grew up in certain places at a time that were great for straight white men and much worse for so many others. the US was competing against places destroyed by war and there were massive fed taxes on the rich that subsidized suburbia for people like yourself. you were living on land nowhere near where people like yourself could trace back to having "evolved".
"other people" now have much more freedom and economic security.
