the hashtags are basically the two pieces we need to do a decentralized Spotify. afaik canimus is mostly just a spec so far to allow some future app to connect to musician sites. and public patron isn't even that yet, just my idea to set aside an amount monthly at you bank and have it automatically and directly distributed based on percentage of time spent, to every creator whose work you read, listened or watched. needs a fiat protocol.

some streams include data that allows the app to know what songs were played. so #TuneFM keeps track of what songs were played, providing a link to Spotify. but imagine if instead the app also played songs directly from a musician's site via #canimus. if the app was not only a radio but a decentralized version of Spotify with DJs helping you build your music library? how it should be.

Being a jerk on social media is a negative to weigh against a candidate's possibly great policy positions. But our stupid media environment makes being a jerk a path to the attention needed to run in the first place. And our stupid electoral system means voters usually don't have few other options to vote for anyway, without supporting a spoiler candidate.

hopefully this example will provide more evidence to many of why their theoretical technical model of decentralization naturally leads to centralization, exactly like the VCs must have thought would happen.
our battle here is not easy but the possible outcome is much bigger than fixing social media or even the web. converting money into attention perverts culture and civics and that's what we're really fighting to overturn here imo.

I think that social media is the proper name for reverse chronological feeds with boosts, especially when items include articles, pictures, podcasts, videos, songs etc. the social news feed, not microblogging. attention democracy.
but feeds mostly controlled by algos shouldn't qualify. nor should group chats and messaging, that's social networking.

journalists (but many others too) want a network with huge democratic reach where everyone they care about can talk to each other. open networks facilitate this if we work to let people only see what they want (no ads, corp algos, mod for unwanted mentions) and no node can block user visibility for much of the network

Some people still make apps tied solely to their content. The worst example in my experience is internet radio but apparently #newsmast is trying to make this a selling point re reading articles.

I do not advocate a free for all approach. we should just focus on replies (unwanted tagging) instead of general content. when somebody is forcing themselves into others' attention. imo the fedi, in not having algos, is like browsing plus email. we generally support browsing to wherever you want or creating horrible websites, but support people in blocking spam. do that here. any limits you want on your server but also federate freely, unless they don't police harassment.

In the video in the post I just boosted, @nprofile…4hqr says #Substack is now boiling the frog in a slow move from email towards lock-in. And of course they work with Nazis etc.
What we need is an effort between newsletter publishers like #Ghost #WordPress etc and reader apps like @nprofile…2vzg to build an ecosystem like podcasting. To make it smooth while remaining totally open. I'd argue for using #ActivityPub in addition to RSS to support boosts. Then we need decentralized money.

The #WHCA dinner could be awesome. I love the idea of electeds having to deal with a room full of adversarial journalists, with all of it getting out to the public unedited. Add in lots of talk of our great ideals and comics exposing where the nation falls short. Then have other celebrities wandering around in order to get more of the public to pay attention.
That's kinda my dream of a perfect party. Where the small talk is instead about important issues and political philosophy.

Fedi is frustrating because we're so awesome for the one thing almost nobody seems to care about here. Uncontrollable virality based purely on human agency.
Obviously there's no corporate ads or algos. But you can also find your people and hang out with them without being bothered using so many other technologies. Currently even bluesky has a ban hammer that will affect your reach on almost the entire ATmosphere.

I'd love to know what you think about the AT vs AP systems. I find the PDS idea awesome but hate the app view, that it seems designed to ensure a quite centralized experience. what the tech might enable vs how it will actually play out. AT developers seem to think they will run a service on the network and get rich while AP developers want to make a new thing possible and imagine endless implementations. maybe I'm too cynical.

I'm very glad that tool exists but so many of those servers are tiny and full of users with very eccentric opinions. just counting them up can make you think it's worse than it is.
the blocks that bother me are democracy dot town, hachyderm dot io and mastodon dot art. I feel like those have impacted me. people I want to follow on them or people I know who use them. and they are bigger AFAIK.

Our "paying for media" system is broken because it doesn't keep up with what is recommended to us via social media.
You can pay a lot of money for lots of services and still not be able to check out the cool new thing all your friends are suddenly talking about. Or still have to sit through ads when you'd rather just pay them directly.
So both fans and artists get screwed while executives cash in. A world of indie creators where the money still goes to big corporations.

I disagree. The only servers that should be blocked are those that fail to address their users who engage in unwanted tagging. That's harassment/abuse. It drives away users. I could support a list of servers somehow so verified.
But to go further than this is a kind of censorship of content allowed elsewhere on the web. Stuff we basically never stumble on while browsing. Without algos here, it will never be forced on us.

I believe he addressed these concerns under the sections titled "The Flywheel" and "The Gmail Problem". new apps still end up giving more users to bluesky. and the protocol is designed in such a way that centralization is encouraged.
under "The Chokepoints", he acknowledges you're correct ala blacksky. but that's a huge ask. but they're not fully independent yet and it's hard to believe most would ever be happy with the alts' functionality if bluesky went full adversary re them.

Great article but I don't think we'll have a moment where #bluesky is sold or most people agree that they've gone evil. That's why just having an exit isn't enough. For that to work, most of the people you want to connect to have to agree quickly. Or when many start to leave, the original network can't turn off federation and lock-in the majority who haven't left yet.

The worst thing most people can think of being is a child abuser, but that's only because most of us have never been in a position to decide what happens to lots of people. We're not CEOs or elected officials. Firing thousands of people to make a few people much wealthier is worse. Same with starting a war or imposing sanctions. #monsters

how do you stop somebody from creating bots to fuck with that?
the fedi kinda relies on having a small network of trust and not having to care about the trustworthiness of those outside of that. jerks can be on the network and it doesn't affect me as long as I don't follow them or anybody that boosts their jerky posts and there's a system to keep them from being able to harass me.
we lock down the network unnecessarily when we extend trust too far. a block might be personal etc.

more opportunities to speak changes nothing if nobody is there to listen. anybody who has created an unpopular blog knows this. we did not have a sudden rise in hate in our lives because the internet showed up in the 90s.
the problem with hate today is the algos. that people are in spaces where shit can be pushed at us and the most triggering junk is profitable for them to amplify. we must push for further use by everyone of decentralized social media to deal with this.

Mike Masnick of #bluesky blocked me. He told me before to be nicer about them. I boost him a lot (sent the link to his paper to a lot of people) but I am also critical cause I really care about the potential of decentralized social media. I don't think I am abusive but I guess that's not for me to judge. Couldn't he have just muted my account?
