I agree, it's a steep hill. But if we fail, it will be on execution (my fault) and the next team will have to crack it.
At the end of the day, either the cypherpunk thesis was wrong, or we still need a general-purpose personal cryptosystem that regular people can actually use.
Steep hill or not, it's not optional and it's one I'm willing to die on.
That said, I assume I am wrong about plenty of details, so please let me know if you see any problems or better options. I'd genuinely love to hear them.

Zsub is a general-purpose personal cryptosystem.
Here is what that really means.
Personal computers were the missing infrastructure that unlocked the value of software. The cypherpunk vision of transforming the world with strong cryptography has not materialized because we've been missing the equivalent infrastructure.
All cryptography architecture begins with root of trust. The correct root of trust must be the responsible person. The correct primitive is a seed in self-custody. This just isn't negotiable.
This is why I say the seed is the crown jewel of cryptographic primitives.
I don't say "Bitcoin seed" because the seed is NOT a feature of Bitcoin. It's the infrastructure that it runs on. Bitcoin runs on the seed. Nostr runs on the seed. SSH runs on the seed. Supply chains run on the seed. Authentication runs on the seed. Encrypted messages run on the seed. Secure networks run on the seed. ...
That means what we need is to own a seed, operate it across all the contexts of our lives, and apply it all the things we need to use. A system that does this for everyone has to hold and operate that seed securely, map it invisibly onto normal human actions and trust decisions, and integrate with the things that matter.
Some people say it's too hard. And true enough, it's not easy. But if we call ourselves cypherpunks, then this is the job. And it's what we're building.
Zsub is a general-purpose personal cryptosystem.
It's personal because the root of trust is you. It's general-purpose because the applications are many, but you are one.
Strong cryptography is for everyone.

🎇 New release from Zsub: secure transport layers.
This repo contains the transport stack we will use for Zsub integration:
- Keel: secure link protocol: fixed cell, mutual auth and double ratchet.
- Submerge: reliable transport protocol: chunking, reassembly, and repair.
- Surface: the overlay traffic envelope for L2 and L3 traffic.
- Mooring: cross platform virtual interface manager.
Code, docs, and protocol drafts are up. Comments welcome.
This gets us very close to the final integration step and the first release we
will properly call Zsub.

This is a complex problem to actually solve in a general way. The trouble is using publication for the trust chain is inherently linkable. So you just keep kicking the privacy can down the pseudonymous road. We solved this in Zsub with a sigma protocol we call Heavy to create hidden webs of trust.

When @nprofile…tkhj says Nostr is identity, he's not wrong. But I would add something.
Identity is relational, but it's not JUST relational. Identity must include a private personal core and private personal relationships organized around it. Public identities are like the parts of the plant you see above the ground. But a seed needs soil first, to put down tender roots in the dark.
That's why seed self-custody and private relationships are just as important to the identity problem as public keys are. That's why we're building a hidden web of trust with Zsub: the part beneath the surface.
The reason strong cryptography never became properly usable for everyone is that we never built that part. We're building it.

Yes, and by that logic, accelerating self-custody adoption is our short squeeze.

Thanks! We're getting very excited. Building from the ground up like this has taken a lot of self-discipline, but it's paying off.
We won't tell anybody to put in production until there's a formal audit completed. Here's the roadmap:
- networking and hardening for the next 3 months
- audits, more hardening and build apps for 3 months after that
- then we will run pilots
It may be as much as a year before we get to customer-ready polish. It's killing me but I think it's important to take the time to do it right.

Thanks! Cryptography education should definitely be for everyone.
That said, I don't think we are ever going to see universall competency, and everyone deserves to be secure. Neither Bitcoin adoption nor the cybersecurity situation can really wait either. For us, we're used to using cryptography and expecting each other to learn it, but I just don't think that scales.
We're taking it as our responsibility to give the users tools they can use without asking every user to become a cryptographer. We're building this for people who have no idea what cryptography even is.
With respect to assigning keys, putting keys to relationships is easy if you own the contact manager. A contact is a key and an exchange. Users are already giving us all the information we need.
The reason we've failed in the past is that we weren't starting with the person. We solved for Bitcoin, we solved for SSH, we solved for PGP, we solved for TLS. They are all just links, but not a whole chain. We didn't solve for the person. We didn't start there and we left them to fill in the gap with ceremonies.
On cognitive load, users are already managing accounts and passwords and wallets and everything else, and it's huge hassle everyone is struggling with now. When you ground in the trust signals that are already there, and fix the fragmentation, it actually becomes a big net reduction in cognitive load. And they get Bitcoin self-custody and more for free.
The network part actually gets a lot easier too. Once you capture the trust network cryptographically, the network becomes automatic too. Our protocol exchanges network information in the key exchange. It agrees on where to rendezvous for next encrypted hole punch too. We're going to do that over Nostr at first to bootstrap, but relays are also built in.
You are right to say that there is some interesting stuff to work through in the networking. But we have a lot of it done and software defined networks are pretty well understood. It's definitely easier than the problems we've already solved, so I am feeling pretty good about it.
I'll let you know as soon as the networking is ready. (2-3 months, working on it now.) If you want to try it out when it's ready, we'd love that!

Who we should really take to account are the devs, influencers and businesses in the space who cashing in on quantum FUD or just bending a cowardly knee to it. That's who is doing the most damage and it's a lot less defensible.
I understand cutting an optional PQ build so you can get your product across the regulatory moat (which I am doing too) but you can check those compliance boxes for FIPs or whatever without feeding the FUD or betraying the promise of ECC.

Yeah, this is the career-protecting diplomacy of the paper. What it really means is that computation is physical. You have to represent your parameters physically. QC dreams require representing parameters beyond the information capacity of matter. aka below planck scale. Just because you can describe infinite scaling in abstract formulae, doesn't mean you can physically compute that way. Finite information fits in matter and the hard ceiling is Planck. Negative proof is a silly standard, but I understand why the authors are afraid to be direct.

There is no realistic path to threatening the integrity of Bitcoin's cryptography. There is no meaningful evidence that any such path exists.
