Self-custody vs BTC or crypto platforms: which one is right for your SMSF?
There are different ways to hold Bitcoin in your SMSF. Each approach has trade-offs worth understanding.
Self-custody (hardware wallet or your own setup)
You hold the private keys yourself. Nobody else has access. Complete control and independence.
The upside is security and autonomy. If you know what you're doing, self-custody works well.
The downside is you're responsible for everything. Lose your password and your BTC is gone. No customer support. You handle backups. You manage compliance records. You deal with the technical side.
Multi-signature (multi-sig) custody
This is the middle ground. You use a wallet that requires multiple approvals to move crypto. For example, you might need three signatures to authorise any transaction. You hold one key, your accountant holds another, and a trusted third party holds the third.
The upside is security with backup. If you lose your key, the BTC isn't gone because the other key holders can help. It's harder to hack because you need multiple approvals. It's still your BTC.

Five questions to ask yourself before buying Bitcoin in your SMSF
Before you move money into Bitcoin (or any other crypto), ask yourself these five questions. If you can't answer them clearly, you're not ready yet.
1. Does my trust deed allow it?
Check your SMSF's trust deed. Does it permit digital assets or investments outside traditional classes? If it doesn't explicitly allow crypto, you need to amend it first. That takes time and costs money. Do it before you buy anything.
2. Can I afford the costs?
Running an SMSF has fees. Audit fees, accounting fees, platform fees, compliance costs. If your SMSF balance is small, these costs might outweigh the benefit of holding BTC. Do the maths. Make sure it makes financial sense.
3. What's my actual investment strategy?
Don't buy Bitcoin because it's trendy. Have a reason. Is it for diversification? Long term growth? What percentage of your fund should it be? Write it down. If you can't articulate why you're buying it, you probably shouldn't.
4. Can I handle the volatility?

Ever wondered what happens to your Bitcoin SMSF when you pass away?
If you're holding BTC (or any crypto) in your SMSF, there's something important you probably haven't thought about. What happens to it when you pass away? It's not a comfortable topic, but it matters. A lot.
The basic problem
If nobody knows where your crypto is stored or how to access it, your family might not be able to get to it. Your holdings could sit frozen on an exchange or in a hardware wallet that nobody has the password to. That's a worst case scenario, but it happens.
Your Will doesn't cover your SMSF directly
Your regular Will handles your personal assets. It doesn't automatically pass control of your SMSF to your beneficiaries. Your SMSF has its own rules about who can take over as trustee and what happens to the assets.
That's why the trust deed of your SMSF matters. It spells out what happens to the fund and its assets when a trustee dies.
Your beneficiaries need to know where things are
Successful estate planning starts with documentation. Write down which exchange your crypto is on. Document the account details. If you use hardware wallets, store that information somewhere secure that someone you trust can access.
If your crypto is in self custody, your beneficiaries need to know how to access it. That means keeping a record of passwords or seed phrases in a secure place, like a safe deposit box or with a solicitor.
Communicate with your family
Your beneficiaries don't need to know your passwords. But they do need to know that you hold BTC or crypto, roughly how much it's worth, and where to find the documentation about it. A simple letter kept with your will goes a long way. It doesn't need to be complicated. Just clear directions.
Tax planning doesn't stop at the grave
While you're thinking about your SMSF structure, it's worth having a conversation about tax efficiency during your lifetime too.
Two strategies that come up a lot for BTC SMSF members are the withdraw and recontribute strategy and tax parcel selection.
If you're over preservation age and still working, withdrawing funds tax free from super and recontributing them as non-concessional contributions can reduce or eliminate the taxable component of your balance. That matters a lot at death. Taxable components passed to non-dependants (like adult children) attract a 15% tax plus Medicare levy on the taxed element. Reducing that component now can save your beneficiaries a meaningful amount.
Tax parcel selection is simpler but equally powerful. When your SMSF sells crypto, you're not stuck using the first-in-first-out method. Selecting which parcels to dispose of first, whether that's the ones with the highest cost base, the ones you've held longest, or the ones sitting at a loss, can significantly reduce the capital gain in any given year. In accumulation phase that's taxed at 15% (or 10% with the CGT discount for assets held over 12 months). The difference between smart parcel selection and default treatment adds up quickly when you're dealing with assets that have appreciated substantially.
