The decentralized movement has solved the money problem and addressed the identity problem. Hardly anyone talks about the third problem.
A marketplace without middlemen is still useless if I can’t find what I’m looking for. Zero percent fees are of no use to anyone whose listing is in a category where no one is looking for them. A reputation system only works if two listings by the same person are recognized as belonging to the same person. And DAO governance usually regulates who is allowed to vote—rarely who is allowed to create, modify, or mark information as outdated.
Centralized platforms solve this through authority: one person defines the categories; another cleans things up. Anyone who abolishes this authority must solve the problem differently—not ignore it.
I spent a year working on Bitcoin adoption for small and medium-sized businesses. Centrally stored data is a problem!
Eurail advertises heavily discounted train tickets. The price: complete identity information. Now this data is on the dark web.
On December 26, 2025, a hacker stole centrally stored personal data from 308,777 travelers. The stolen data includes highly sensitive information:
Passport numbers and expiration dates
Names, addresses, email addresses, phone numbers, dates of birth
In some cases, passport copies, bank details, and health information. Eurail didn’t notify the affected customers until three months later. By then, the data had already been sold on the dark web. The irony of it all: Eurail would never have needed this sensitive data to sell train tickets. So what did Eurail want with the data? Why is a simple product like a train ticket suddenly linked to a complete digital identity? And why is the data stored centrally? The users bear the brunt of the damage, not those responsible. They are now expected to obtain new passports at their own expense. The question of protecting banking, health, and other data—and thus everything needed for a successful identity theft—remains unresolved. The tickets are still being sold under the same terms and conditions, including through DB and ÖBB.
