You know it's interesting. I don't think these two ideas are opposed to each other.
Bitcoin becoming a place that is safe for people to store a certain amount of their economic energy is one stone in a series of stones that crosses the river to payments.
But custody is turning out to be a real stumbling block. The more that is fleshed out and solved, the quicker we get to payments, because people will have it. And more people might prefer it over other forms of money.
But until people can feel safe holding it, what makes it better than venmo?

I appreciate this very thoughtful and thorough answer. And I agree with most of it. Your simple paragraph of the negative side of the trade-offs monero makes is quite good.
Where I believe we differ is on the current state of Bitcoin and the implicit state of it in the future. I agree Bitcoin is being used for all kinds of tomfoolery and silliness with blocks full of transactions that are out of sync with the purpose for which it was originally developed.
It's interesting, continuing to contrast Monero to Bitcoin, some of the reasons the former has emerged *currently* as a superior transactional money are exactly those same reasons.
Monero is actually being used as transactional money because it is more fungible as well as private. Ordinals on Bitcoin, for example, require a transparent base layer. You couldn't really do those on Monero. Its design makes that impractical if not impossible.
You said Bitcoin is mainly used for speculation. I think that is ignoring the store of value property that Bitcoin is also doing quite well at the moment. People complain that a good store of value is not volatile. But I almost think that's economic propaganda more than truth. Bitcoin is still bootstrapping, and in the last decade and a half its volatility has been diminishing.
I foresee that once Bitcoin has established itself as a trustworthy, worldwide, trust minimized, decentralized asset, that transactional uses will follow naturally. Of course, most of these will not be on the base chain. That has always been true since the moment of Satoshi's first email. But these are just computer science problems. Some solutions already exist.
I believe Bitcoin's transactional use will outbid the spam in the end. And I believe that SOME data on the chain is important for things like transactional systems to be built on top of it. (honestly, I think op_return just being large enough for a a few hashes to be stored is probably enough, but...)
Bitcoin's design originally and with the people who have carried the torch since the beginning has prioritized its continued decentralization over its transactional use. I think this is the right decision.
If Monero's use grows to the point that it is being universally used transactionally, its blockchain will become huge. And it will centralize.
But since we're not there yet with either Monero or Bitcoin, Monero has the advantage.
The reason I'm engaging with you is I have enjoyed your posts ever since I've been reading them and I share a lot of your views. I've also been in the Bitcoin "space" for a long time. I've seen good people branch off into other projects, not chasing after the latest shiny thing, but because they believe there's a mistake being made. Bitcoin Cash and several others frankly. Monero did not start that way, but it ended up there too.
But I think any blockchain-based cryptocurrency is going to face the same problems. And a lot of work has been done on Bitcoin to begin to solve those problems. It is also the clear schelling point in this whole realm.
I agree that parts of Bitcoin's development have been bad choices, particularly recently.
But I also believe we're not going to get another chance at this. And I think we must be careful not to let the perfect be the enemy of the good. As much as I respect Luke Dashjr, I believe that's what he's doing.
Anyway, if you read all this, I appreciate it. And, again, I appreciate your heartfelt, articulate thoughts.

Do you not think that to actually separate money from state you would have to have number go up?
Don't get me wrong. Majoring on that, concentrating on it, making it a pillar of your religious faith in Bitcoin is a mistake.
But the world is not going to use a form of money that does not hold or gain value.
I have been watching Bitcoin for a very long time. In every cycle, there's a new bad guy, a new entity that has captured Bitcoin.
It's been mtgox and China and tether and the banks and the treasury companies and the ETFs and each time we add a new bad guy and drag all the other ones back out of the closet again and parade them around.
I respect your thoughts on this, and I understand where you're coming from. I am not truly a maxi in the sense that I think most people mean. I am a giant Monero fan, for example.
But Bitcoin is for everyone. It's for the people we don't like. It's for the United States government and Iran. It's for the banks. It's for the billionaires. And if it can't survive, those people trying to control it, then we never needed all the bad guys. It was going to fail on its own.

It's an interesting question. As someone who has been interested in Monero from the very beginning I am not surprised. For many people like myself who might even call themselves "Bitcoin Maxis"... Monero is the only project that really does something that Bitcoin cannot and should not ever do. An obfuscated base layer is an architectural choice that has tremendous trade-off implications. And just like Bitcoin, in the end, there can really only be one project that successfully takes this path. To this day, Monero is that project.
It may be possible, and frankly I hope it is, that Bitcoin payment layers will eventually offer the same level of fungibility, privacy, and sovereignty that Monero offers on its base layer for the spender. And when that happens, Monero will most likely become much less important.
But until that happens... And you need to be able to send someone value without it being potentially known by anyone on Earth...
There really is currently only one choice.
Monero solves problems that Bitcoin does not even try to solve. They are not competitors, really. And people making some religious war between the two in either direction are really missing the forest for the trees.

I both respect, and question all the people destroying their #ColdCards.
Respect because it is pure. And it is cathartic. And it is certainly a safe path forward assuming you have backed up any important secrets it might still hold.
But I question because... this hardware is well designed, and the software features and architecture are quite good.
I believe most futures for the ColdCard end with a reasonable decision to : SHOOT HERE!
But... there is this one perfect world still possible.
CoinKite chooses to fully (really) Open Source the hardware AND software. Perhaps they can continue to go on selling and supporting the device if they somehow survive the next while. (LOL)
But this scenario would allow the community to pick up and develop for the hardware.
And in this case you might regret having dropped your ColdCard into a volcano?

I think something is very important here.

The people on the other side of this are not your enemies. They are not people who want something very different than you do even. They're people with a difference of opinion on how this should play out.

This honestly makes me sad.
I have been in Bitcoin almost as long as Luke may be exactly as long.
Luke has been one of the most important contributors to the project from the very beginning.
He has a natural strong bent towards contrarian and adversarial thinking. He tends to believe and act in the extreme.
I believe he cares about what Bitcoin is deeply and probably even sees the project as something that would protect against evil currencies in the digital age.
I agree with him on so many parts of why he is fighting.
This is not a minor loss to Bitcoin.
But Bitcoin is not about one guy.

This is why I recently switched back over to Core 29.
I love the idea of there being less spam. I love the idea of doing simple things to restrict the amount of data that can be crammed into the Bitcoin blockchain.
But I also believe transactions that have a payload that does something useful, like data anchors for monetary uses, etc., are extremely valuable in having a little space to do that while still letting it be prunable for other note runners is good as well.
The two camps are too extreme for me.
One side seems to understand the game theory better.

#CoinKite cannot come back from this.
Even if they could rebuild the lost trust the company AND principals (due to negligence piercing the LLC/corporate protections) are going to be sued into oblivion.
The only HONORABLE move @nvk and @coinkite can do is simple:
They should FULLY make both the hardware and software 100% open source. This would allow the community to rescue the existing devices and project from being useless.
This is also the most effective, if not only way for the people behind this debacle to regain a small amount of respect in the community.
And... It is right.

After watching Jameson Lopp mock his customer base, it became easy for me to strike this company from my list. I will never do business with a company with a founder who makes fun of the people who would be his customers.
Some of us will not forget.
There are other companies that do this same kind of job, but are led by people who have respect for others.
I suggest that anyone interested in forging a business relationship with a company that's doing something as important as helping them custody their Bitcoin should make sure that they're comfortable with the people leading it. To be honest, I think we've seen enough of what that kind of leadership begets even in recent days.

One thing that may not be super evident yet is the legal tsunami that's coming for #Coinkite and #NVK and possibly even investors. (though I believe there is less risk there)
If it were an American company, I believe protections offered by LLCs and Incorporation can be pierced in the case of criminal negligence.
The evidence of this bug being reported to coinkite by multiple sources... customers, security analysts, and possibly even competitors is extremely damning and would make that criminal negligence easy to prove.
I wonder if the principles are busy deleting things and virtually shredding documents, so to speak. I think if email records, for example, were entered into the court record, it could be exceedingly damning for both the company and the principal actors.

I want to say this is an extreme take and it is really, but it sure resonates right now.
At the same time, I want to know where the line is between scams, mistakes, grifters, even ones who don't know they're more or less one of those things and people just using a tool.

It certainly could be possible, but I don't think I buy it. And here's why.
1. This is certainly one of the most massive negative things that the Bitcoin community has ever faced. But in the grand scale of things in the world today, it's anothet tempest in a teapot. (NOT downplaying the pain of people who lost their savings.)
2. Frankly, though cold card is responsible for this, so are all the people who used it. I'm not saying this in a victim-blaming way. I'm saying that the victims of this attack have all of us to be upset with because something this fundamentally awful should have been caught in code that everyone could see.
3. The idea that this has been going on for years and it has been known about is explainable in a lot of ways other than conspiracy. NVK has a habit of tossing away criticism and just immediately labeling anything negative as fud. And the community has always been ready to just lap that right up for the most part. It's very possible that the people who lost coins between 2021 and now have been people who are victims of a collision rather than an attacker.
So it could be conspiracy and I think we should be watching as more of this unfolds.
I think the Bitcoin community has been participating in some cult-like behaviors that have been negative for the adoption of Bitcoin and for the health of the people that are working on it and using it.
I think good regular people did the "right things" according to the priests in the Bitcoin community and they got burned and this is the most tragic part of the whole thing. That pronouncement, that what they did were the right things. Sounds more like a bad religion to be than life
I say the next thing I'm going to say a lot, but I mean it. And if this event is enough to significantly harm the trajectory of Bitcoin as a tool to help people be more free and sovereign, then Bitcoin was a failure the day the white paper came out. We just didn't know yet.
I don't think that is the case. I think Bitcoin is a hopeful technology we can use to live better lives
But I also think the best way to handle what's happened in our community is to realize what it is. It's a tool. It's not a club. It's not a faith. It's not a set of rules and it can be used for evil. It can be co-opted
My heart hurts for the people hit by this thing.

I have begun to think that it's even more likely that the a customer or two produced a wallet and found it already had coins in it and then moved them.
I think I saw someone say the math on the collisions is one in 1.8 million or so. That's a lot of keys, but considering a lot of people might create several wallets...

Yeah, and I think there's probably lots and lots of people on here that are ready for it. It's not like you got to be in a special club, but I could just see some of the less technical people tripping over some scary stuff and then not being able to find what they do with their Bitcoin.
I do think Craig the developer has added some more warnings and such in certain areas.
