I always confuse Kaku with Giorgio A. Tsoukalos who is definitely a quack. I class Kaku and Tyson as not quacks personally. Mostly quality though admittedly dumbed down, gotta make some concessions if you choose to try to speak to the masses. In a world with guys like Tsoukalos and Kruse, quack is a bit aggressive for Kaku and Tyson.

I get what you are saying. I mean compared to? Compasses haven't even existed "for a long time" in terms of the geological scales we're talking about measuring.
The time scale of the processes allegedly predicted compared to the time scale of human ability to measure it alone should make you question.
Unless I'm mistaken there aren't any solid ways to get a historical record with any precision. Ignoring interpretation which is a whole other landmine I don't want to step on, compare measuring gas concentration in old ice cores. We can get modern accuracy of historical data. No equivalent techniques for magnetic fields exists. The precision of the historical record is 0 pre compass and only ever as good as the tools and record keeping of the time. The pole could have been moving 4x as fast 200 years ago and no one would know.

As an outsider to that field, my question would be about precision. I'm assuming the measurements have become more precise and that the need for precision is increasing as easier fields are depleted.
Seems like that could explain the need for more frequent testing to me and more frequent testing with more precise instruments will show more change.

I think it depends from my understanding. Load matching cuts both ways. Generate too much and grid voltage rises, too little and you get brownouts. The speed and accuracy of your ability to load match is what matters.
Batteries help on both sides if you float them mid charge. They can supplement when your generation falls short and sink power when generation runs hot. This is critical because large power plants don't start or stop quickly or cheaply.
Batteries win on speed. From what I have read speed is becoming more and more of an issue because loads they see are becoming more volatile. Data center loads are apparently a massive problem in that way.

I believe it. Batteries are expensive. Anything other than batteries comes with conversion losses and a generator to maintain.
None of this accounts for the added cost of generation that over produces enough to not need batteries. Which may be downright impossible depending on site and power source.
Another issue is load matching which is a whole big thing. A major issue at grid scale and getting worse.

17 is a rough count. Around here the lights are being switched to traffic camera control instead of the coils. It's going great. Now all the carefully tuned flow patterns are destoyed by having mixed non interoperable light triggers. It's creating massive choke points at some lights that back up so bad they block the next intersection back.

Phones charge faster because they can fit a larger coil on both sides which makes a bigger and stronger magnetic field. Toothbrushes typically charge on the end so only a small coil fits.
Inductors are also how voltage stepping is done. The transformer on the pole outside your house is an inductor capable of powering your whole house. Your toothbrush isn't the size of a barrel though so far less current.

The issue is not the devices directly. The issue is the data is open for lots of actors we'd rather not have see it. This angle is why @nprofile…mjzq was saying a vacation photo doesn't bother him but flock does. The vacation photo will presumably remain private to the vacationers not weaponized against you like flock or ring data.
It is interesting because we first used "information wants to be free" against them. Now it is being turned at us.
They have evolved and we need to as well. The question is what asymmetric angle is there to play? Vandalism fits. Poisoning the data works too which is why they are already pushing so many ID laws and burner phone bans. Ways to add difficulty and punishment if you corrupt their precious data.

The blurring of the lines between public and private enterprise is a hallmark of communism and other high control low freedom government types.
Most of their business comes from governments. Their purpose in that role is to circumvent the 4th amendment here in America. The government can't collect so they buy because lawyers are fucking scum who most about winning even if it is a clear violation of the intent of the law.
So yeah, a "private" company can absolutely be a symbol of government overreach and wrongdoing. Other examples would be Palantir and Blackwater.

This is wrong. Deformed products get more processing into forms where the deformity is less obvious. Carrots too crooked to be sold as whole carrots become baby carrots or shreds and slices in other products. The ugly apples become pies, ciders, and applesauce while the pretty ones get sold as whole apples in the store. Why on earth would a store sell a deformed chicken as a whole roaster where the deformity is most obvious when they could part it out into wings, thighs, and breasts discarding the worst of the deformity if necessary?

This guy is a small farmer whose customer base is local. Vertical monopoly from feed to chicken at your door. He's more than happy to shit on the big farms where they are fucking up but unlike your influencer yelling soaked in bleach, his trade is in honesty and chicken. That means that he doesn't make up lies about his competition or spread fear for a living. They do plenty wrong which he addresses in other videos.

You sound like you've never gutted an animal before. Cooked or not no one wants to eat a small animal that wasn't washed. Small animals are impossible to gut and skin without getting them covered in bits of fur or feathers that would make them unappetizing. Any store that didn't wash the chicken would lose all their sales. The 1 in a million customer who would buy an unwashed chicken is going to take it home and wash it before cooking it.
And again "soaked in bleach" shows poor reading comprehension on your part. It is tap water. Technically it has some bleach in it, but calling it soaked in bleach is so misleading it is effectively an outright lie. It is the same water you drink out of the faucet in far higher quantities than you'll ever ingest from a cooked chicken.

It's bleach according to the fearmongers who make their money telling you all the ways your food is killing you. Technically it is not bleach but a bleach solution of unspecified ratio. In common language it's tap water from the local city supply to wash the crap off of it before cooking. The same tap water you just straight drink.
Remember that these were once live animals covered in feathers, full of blood, and had an entire intestinal tract. You definitely do not want to eat the ones that weren't washed. Literally no one sells chickens that weren't washed. Unless your local farmer has a well they use for washing during processing your local 10x the price of Costco chicken was also "dunked in bleach" by the same standard.
As for the plastic, the old containers were also plastic. I admit I'm not a fan but this probably isn't the top priority microplastics source in your life by a mile.

Did some reading. Surge protects high voltage. In a brownout they do nothing.
Brownouts still break things because low voltage draws the current high enough to let the magic smoke out.
The only way to save yourself from brownout is an AVR UPS. Who has that for their light switches?

I already did before this storm, an authentic Boltshield FSPD 140kA. It is still there and the LEDs say all good. Not sure why these failed anyway. Power flickered a lot, maybe they just didn't like being repeatedly quickly powered cycled.

Why do so many people cut corners? Doing it right take 10 times longer than expected. Why does everything take 10 times as long as expected if you do things right? Let me tell you about my day.
Zwave dimmer died, it was making the lights flicker. Which breaker is it? Check the nearest outlet, that's not it but it also isn't GFCI even though it is in a bathroom. So I replace it with a GFCI, label the outlet and the breaker, then test the new GFCI works. All good, back to the switch I was supposed to be working on.
Check the next nearest outlet to the switch. This one is GFCI but it is a 20a outlet on a 15a breaker. So I replace it with a 15a GFCI, label the outlet and the breaker, then test the GFCI. All good, back to the switch I was supposed to be working on.
Ok, it looks like I'm out of luck with the breaker finder. So I start guessing breakers nearby in the panel that aren't labeled yet. 4 trips back and forth bathroom to breaker panel to find it. Now I can finally replace the switch I set out to replace. This one has power through the outlet box and the connections through the box are poorly installed wire nuts, did I do that? Time to redo the connections properly with Wagos. Then finally, label the outlet and the breaker.
Now for the good news. I still need to update all my HomeAssistant automations to the new switch and I have 2 more of those dimmers that also died in the same storm.

Firefighters don't use grinders. They use a combination of sawzalls and the jaws of life. I promise you that you do not know more than the guys who do this every day for a living. The sawzall with carbide blades is the correct tool among those readily available to the public.
You can't finish your cut faster than a gasoline fire can kill both you and the person you were incompetently trying to save. The fact that you can't grasp the risk of lighting a fire with grinder sparks tells me your knowledge of grinders comes from reading the internet.
As an emergency preparedness bonus the same sawzall can be used for clearing downed trees from the road just by swapping blades while a grinder cannot.
