I started a hostel back in the 1990s, independent from the chains, out on our own doing it our way. It was hugely successful, offered arts residencies, maintained a reasonable pricing, kept the focus on the traveller and allowed us to raise our family. Very similar cycle. We were harassed relentlessly by corporate marketers wanting 25% of our revenue for online booking services etc. I have been fighting this fight my whole life. Our beautiful friend here, won’t win by fighting the good fight, because Goliath is more than gigantesque. But he will win by continuing to follow his integrity, continuing to choose better based on values. Break free and build new, seems to be the way forward.

That depends so much on your local weather. British Italian huh, I’m southern tip of Australia, fairly mild coastal climate, not much frost. I’m also a really lazy gardener, so I just let them do their thing and keep them turning over. In different patches around the garden. That way some are ready somewhere when I want them.

My mum said to wait till the flowers die off before digging. Don’t replant babies. Keep your biggest, healthiest spud in a paper bag in a dark spot until it sprouts healthy shoots. Pull off the shoots on one side leaving the strongest then replant, root down. Plant parsley close by, they get along well

Stab it all over like a crazed maniac, about 2cm apart, 1cm deep. In each hole put a sliver of garlic and a spring of fresh rosemary. Coat it generously with olive oil, bit of salt and pepper, in the oven. I always want to try other recipes but can’t get there. Yes, on the spit is also amazing, then you get to thrash it every 20 mins with a rosemary branch from a barrel of water and oil. Fun for everyone. Stabbing or thrashing, take your pick

Hollywood stopped making films worth viewing long ago. It went from soulless to soul sapping and I was out. Could have been AI for the last decade for all I know. The human actors are pumped with plastic anyway, they seem to have lost their physical capacity to express nuanced expression and the intellect went with it. The plots are trash and the cultural programming stupidly obvious. I could get angsty about it or just enjoy the quiet open space this dead industry has left me to enjoy a cultural cleanse and reopen possibilities. If you seek mainstream advice, you will be given 101 reasons why it’s all your fault and nothing to do with broken gov/systems/corruption/late stage capitalism. Maybe it’s a trauma story of avoidance/childhood messiness whatever, but if you want to live better, go hard on reading, learning, YouTube, podcasts. Start with Gabor Mate. Learn about addiction, neurobiology, behavioural repatterning. Do online courses on therapies, acceptance and commitment therapy, family systems therapy, schema therapy, Intergenerational therapy. Do a guided psilocybin assisted therapy ( not just a trip). Get off on Jung for a while, go hard on complex PTSD ( if you have childhood stuff). I listened to an amazing podcast recently that blew my mind with this perspective. Josh Schrei on The Emerald podcast compared the many Indian gods as being a vastly more contextual way of ‘doing’ mindfulness than our western clinical practices. They honour their ‘hungry gods’ with offerings to maintain balance. The neurobiological shifts that occur when we take physical action to change our emotional or thought patterns is key. This guy sums this up beautifully

My problems with Deutsche are his Zionist views on Palestine which follow the collapse being necessary for renewal process. I view progress not as progress for some, others being collateral damage, which is a process repeated often historically. Progress at this point feels like it is freedom to co-create. ‘Explanations’ can feel like the winners writing history. Explanations can hide motivations. I have finally been around the sun enough times and studied neurobiology and intergenerational trauma integration and growth enough to have finally realised that all those rituals in other more traditional cultures about honouring the ancestors, yeah well, kinda makes good sense. So, to structure our thinking by reflecting on their experiences, to show some gratitude and to make sense of our own behavioural patterns by respecting theirs really works. Reading an amazing book by Silvia Federici ‘Caliban and the Witch’, that looks at the shift from the feudal system to capitalism. The political motivations of removing the commons, whipping up terror and division through the torture and murder of thousands of women in the witch hunts, all occurred at the same time that the slave trade was being implemented. Turns out slavery and removing women from paid labour made some people rather wealthy
