Hollywood stopped making films worth viewing long ago. It went from soulless to soul sapping and I was out. Could have been AI for the last decade for all I know. The human actors are pumped with plastic anyway, they seem to have lost their physical capacity to express nuanced expression and the intellect went with it. The plots are trash and the cultural programming stupidly obvious. I could get angsty about it or just enjoy the quiet open space this dead industry has left me to enjoy a cultural cleanse and reopen possibilities. I had to do a deep dive under the crashing wave and I’ve found myself back in the sunshine. I suddenly have this burning desire to dig out an old movie projector and shine it on a cave wall

I listened to an amazing podcast recently that blew my mind with this perspective. Josh Schrei on The Emerald podcast compared the many Indian gods as being a vastly more contextual way of ‘doing’ mindfulness than our western clinical practices. They honour their ‘hungry gods’ with offerings to maintain balance. The neurobiological shifts that occur when we take physical action to change our emotional or thought patterns is key. My problems with Deutsche are his Zionist views on Palestine which follow the collapse being necessary for renewal process. I view progress not as progress for some, others being collateral damage, which is a process repeated often historically. Reading an amazing book by Silvia Federici ‘Caliban and the Witch’, that looks at the shift from the feudal system to capitalism. The political motivations of removing the commons, whipping up terror and division through the torture and murder of thousands of women in the witch hunts, all occurred at the same time that the slave trade was being implemented. I believe that we will learn to understand, encourage and master the powers behind the left and right hemispheres of the brain. Currently left hemisphere dominance is societally favoured but with considerable negative consequences. Iain McGilchrist’s work in researching the differences between the hemispheres and the strengths and weaknesses of each is mind blowing. (Excuse the pun). I suspect AI is keeping Peter Thiel from stagnation. For the rest of us, I believe it is a tool for humanity and will bring creative vigour when we shake off the exhaustion of 50 years of slavery. Yes many are stuck, yes our future has been stolen, but predictably so. Bad nutrition, lifestyle, suppressed creativity, broken links to the planet we are part of, greed, withering controls and stolen attention will do that. But all of that can be shaken off with a good dose of self awareness, self-sovereignty and collective will. AI won’t help there.
All the needy tech toys, rocket ships, back to the future hoverboards, mind controls like religious fear, existential threats, us vs them sports teams, political teams, war teams, corporate teams, none of it addresses the need, the ache. Recenter, breathe, walk in the forest, surf, ski, cycle, dance, paint, write, grow food, make love, make babies, learn to have self critical thoughts that make you a better person, learn to have difficult conversations with people you love, learn how not to be a self obsessed arsehole, learn how to contribute. AI can be a helpful tool, but it can’t make new humans and it can’t stop us from being jerks.

Just like every other tool humanity invents, it can be used for good or ill. I observe that those who are drawn to the procedural development of, for example dna collection banks, or data scraping, are typically so left hemisphere dominant in their thinking that they don’t/can’t imagine the breath and depth of potentiel risks, while simultaneously perceiving themselves to be more knowledgeable than anyone else. Iain McGilchrist does great work on this. So the task is not just to educate the normies to the risks of giving up data, but also to educate the clever developers/inventers to the potentiel risks their genius tools/weapons can be.

I visited Hiroshima many years ago and found it an incredibly moving experience. My memory is of the kindness and welcoming offered by the locals, particularly in presuming I was American.
