🔺 THE PYTHAGOREAN BROTHERHOOD
Approximately 530 BCE
Pythagoras was more than the man associated with a geometry theorem.
Around 530 BCE, he established a community in Croton, a Greek city in southern Italy.
It combined:
🔢 Mathematics
🎶 Music
🌌 Cosmology
🕯️ Spiritual discipline
♻️ Reincarnation
🤫 Secrecy
🤝 Communal living
The Pythagoreans believed the universe possessed an underlying mathematical order.
They found that harmonious musical intervals could be expressed through numerical ratios.
To them, numbers did not merely describe reality.
Numbers revealed its hidden structure.
Their most important symbol was the Tetractys:

Four rows.
Ten points.
The first four numbers added together:
1 + 2 + 3 + 4 = 10
The Tetractys represented unity unfolding into multiplicity, mathematical proportion and the harmony of the cosmos.
Members followed a structured way of life involving ethical discipline, purification and loyalty to one another.
Teachings were transmitted orally, and followers were expected to protect certain knowledge from outsiders.
Later traditions describe periods of silence, shared property, dietary restrictions and unusual rules—including the famous prohibition against eating beans.
But we must be careful:
Pythagoras left no known writings.
Detailed biographies of him were written centuries after his death.
That makes it difficult to separate the historical philosopher from the legendary master.
The community was simultaneously:
🔺 A philosophical school
🔺 A spiritual community
🔺 A scientific circle
🔺 A political influence
🔺 An initiatory brotherhood
Its ideas influenced Plato, mathematics, musical theory, Western mysticism and later initiatory traditions.
Its central insight still echoes:
🔢 Number creates proportion.
🎶 Proportion creates harmony.
🌌 Harmony creates order.
Perhaps mathematics was never only calculation.
Perhaps it was humanity’s attempt to hear the architecture of the cosmos.
