This is the stated trust model.
Users can reasonably assume that all operators act in concert.
At least there is not one operator, but 3 currently with more possible.
You're technically correct.
The operator can withold the recovery bundle.
From a user perspective, this is the equivalent of freezing funds.
The operators can freeze the service, not the funds.
Exit txs are pre-signed: with a saved recovery bundle the unilateral exit needs zero operator involvement. That's exactly what we tested on mainnet.
Caveat, stated in the post: the bundle must be saved while they still serve you.
The operator can freeze your funds.
By "all operators colluding for theft" I mean all of these at once:
- every operator keeps its key share for a previous state of the leaf instead of deleting it
- all of them sign with those old shares - even combined, that is still not a full key
- they also need the previous owner of the leaf to sign, or to be that previous owner themselves
There are real cases where the SSP is the previous owner, so in practice it reduces to: you are trusting at least one operator to actually delete previous states. That is the stated trust assumption.
Not trustless, and the post does not claim it is.
I'm getting confused by all of this trustodial stuff: can a single Spark operator spend your funds and hence rug-pull you? Can a subset of operators do it?
That doesn't get the point across as clearly. Someone might misinterpret "alone" this way:
Operators can never spend their coins without your permission
Clearly stating that they are taking on the risk of theft is the only ethical way to present it.
Can you actually leave?
We tested it on mainnet: forced a 100k sat Blink wallet out of Spark, back onto Bitcoin.
No operators, just the seed and a saved recovery bundle.

The updated text says:
Operators can never spend your funds alone.
One operator is certainly insufficient.
There's a typo: It should say "The operator CAN spend your funds"
From what I've heard for example Cake wallet is just waiting for Breez SDK to add it then it's a simple matter of including it in the wallet UI. Supposedly it will be soon. Not sure about wallets that use other Spark implementations but I'm guessing it's a similar reason they don't have it yet either.
You can exit with seed only if your wallet took care of saving the recovery bundle while operators were online and willing.
We will have this safeguard in Blink shortly and hope to see it in other Spark based wallets too.

Yes, fees to exit unilaterally should be comparable to Ark as it also uses this kind of transaction chain to be broadcasted.
There are many variables which can be tweaked:
- number and sie of the leaves/vTXOs
- depth of the chain to broadcast
- timelocks
- fee/rate
Ark solutions have this periodical onlineness requirement and ongoing fees for rounds as wrll which make them have different tradeoffs.
Spark works now, but no wallet should be locked in to it. Let it and the alternatives evolve. Our job is to keep our eyes open and assess the risks.
But is this something that e.g. Wallet of Satoshi should be doing proactively? Either when transactions are made, or wake up daily to do consolidation or something. I don't understand the details well.

The consolidation comes with a tradeoff between efficient unilateral exit and fast transactions (lacking denominations will need more swaps with SSPs at payment time).

Do you think Spark and Ark require comparable fees to exit unilaterally? Have you seen a similar study for Ark?
This data liveness requirement is painful but I think comparable to the pain of expiring VTXOs in Ark. There you already always have the state to publish for the unilateral exit but you (wallet or watchtower) must monitor the expiry deadlines.
Of course the other thing is that ark operators are less trusted since they cannot conspire to steal funds.
However I still love Spark because at the end of the day operators don't have enormous liquidity requirements and this will make a big difference in adoption.
Also in Ark has that constant periodical refresh from user wallets, that doesn't look good to me. I don't necessarily open my wallets every month and this is going to be a problem when a lot of users realize this (or have to pay extra for a refresher service).
All in all love the innovation of the L2 space

The hashrate stalling and slightly reducing for an extended amount of time is somewhat disconcerting. More so than much of the noise around.
So the two things that analysts say are only only knowns in warfare are 1: they're unpredictable, and 2: they have a tendency to escalate and grow.
Objectively, this means that vibe coding is analogous to warfare
