What makes for a "digital right?"
In meatspace we have life, liberty, and property and the right to defend them with force. But if someone hacks your email or a platform closes your access to it, who do you fight to defend those things?
If the answer is to self host your email or renounce the platform, you lose our on network effects and genuine conveniences they provide.
Bitcoin comes into the picture as a digital right that you can actually defend the same way you can defend your physical property.
- When you hold your keys, there's no limit to how well you can defend them.
- When you run a node, the cryptography and game theory of the network ensure that you cannot hold an invalid blockchain. And if you do, you're not part of the network.
- When you mine at scale, you are no longer beholden to the wider hashrate to see your transactions get confirmed. Even if you just mine on personal hardware, you are contributing to the collective defense of the entire network.
Bitcoin may well be the first "digital right" in Bastiat's sense of the world. A natural, defensible right that emerges from the individual in a world where such a right may never have existed before.

For those testing SP wallets, keep in mind that things are only "private" untill you spend the coins. If one or more spending transactions use coins from multiple SP utxos (which is quite common), all of those and their sender's will be linked. They all become identifiable over time with bad spending practices. If you are a sender into an SP wallet, remember that you cannot control how well the receiver will spend them. Your "privacy" (it's not really private) is at their mercy.
Needless to say that you should not be spending from SP wallets all the time if you want to keep them "private". You would need to be thoughtful on how to spend to protect your donors.

El Salvador is a useful place to think about bitcoin because it takes the conversation out of the price chart and puts it into daily life.
The country had a brutal reputation for a long time. Civil war, gang violence, and one of the highest murder rates in the world are not minor details. Then Bukele cracked down, the murder rate collapsed, investment started to show up, and in 2021 the country made bitcoin legal tender.
When I visited Bitcoin Beach, the interesting part was how normal some of it felt. I paid for airport transport, food, drinks, souvenirs, and motorbike rentals with bitcoin. For the merchant, payment settles immediately and avoids the 3% card toll. For the traveler, it feels like cash without the bills and coins.
It was also clearly early. Plenty of vendors still preferred dollars, and even a Wendy's with a bitcoin sign did not exactly make checkout seamless.
That is probably the right lesson. Bitcoin's strongest product market fit is still saving, but global, liquid money becomes more useful when you actually move through the world. FIRE gives you more freedom to do that. Bitcoin gives you a better tool to carry with you.
