Hot take: this coldcard thing is one of the best things to happen to bitcoin, and at just the right time.
(Yes, I'm chiming in on the noise of the day)
Obviously its not one of the best things to happen to the people that lost their money. I'm not calloused. Real lives were destroyed.
People are concerned that this hits self custody. I don't really think it does. I think it brings focus back to cryptographic security, it brings people back to FOSS. Those are very good.
But the real benefit here is that it is the nail in the coffin for maximalism.
We are all lucky that this happened with a niche product that not many people were using, specifically branded to maximalists, and especially maximalists that know very little about security (how these two can reside in the same person I don't know). If this had happened with ledger or trezor, which many more people, including bitcoin only people, are using, it could've been a blow to self custody, but it didnt.
People are seeing the revenue of the business that collapsed itself with hubris and thinking "they're that small, really?" and seeing maximalism for what it is: a very, very small group of people, smaller even than some true shitcoins, mostly uneducated about this kind of stuff, and mostly just signalling to each other.
People are seeing that maximalism doesnt protect you. Its a paradigm shift, and every cycle has one in the less profitable period within it that changes outlook and behavior. Some people are realizing that if anything, it blinds you.
There are still going to be some die hards. Nothing wrong with that, its their business. Just like people that still wear masks, some people will cling to it because it was formative for them. And this isn't going to turn all the maxis into monero bros, and you wouldnt want that anyway. Monero would be weaker if its community was loyal to a network in spite of their own well being.
But I think a lot of people are going to be snapped out of the internalized idea that if you select maxis as your tribe youre in the safest camp, and begin to try to think about what makes sense, and I don't think they'll jump on to shitcoins, I dont think they'll ditch the idea of self custody, I think they'll look around and see what there is for them, and that doesnt mean they'll see the value in every network or tool there is, even ones with value, but they'll at least broaden their horizons a little bit and learn from this. And that in particular will help make Bitcoin stronger and healthier.

Tallest was about 65' and 18" dia at the base. 2 of them were standing dead trunks about 30' tall and 20" dia, my bar didnt quite reach across. Super sketchy since they had no limbs and both straight up and down. So much rot they could have either fallen any direction. Busted out the wedges and made sure I had plenty of escape routes and things went pretty smooth. I did take a wedge to the kisser when it popped out when I was driving it in. Overall a solid day running the saws. Lots of work left cleaning them up. But the solar field is open, only trees left are to reduce morning shade and a couple that would hit the array if they fell.
