现在，如果不问种种直观的区别，杂多在想象力中的综合仅仅关涉到杂多的先天结合，我们就把这种综合称为先验的，而如果这种综合的统一性在与统觉的源始统一性的关系中被表现为先天必然的，那么，这种统一性就叫做先验的。既然统觉的这种源始的统一性是一切知识的可能性的基础，所以想象力的综合的先验统一性就是一切可能知识的纯粹形式，因而可能经验的一切对象都必须通过它才能被先天地表现。
统觉的统一性与想象力的综合相关就是知性，而这种统一性与想象力的先验综合相关就是纯粹知性。因此，在知性中就有种种纯粹的先天知识，它们就一切可能的显象而言包含着想象力的纯粹综合的必然统一性。但是，这也就是范畴，亦即纯粹的知性概念；因此，人的经验性的认识能力必然包含着一种知性，这种知性与感官的一切对象相关，尽管这种关系只能凭借直观和直观通过想象力的综合；因此，一切显象作为一个可能经验的材料都服从这种知性。现在，既然显象与可能经验的这种关系同样是必然的（因为没有这种关系，我们就根本不会通过显象而获得知识，显象也就根本与我们无关了） ，所以可以得出，纯粹知性凭借范畴而是一切经验的一个形式的和综合的原理，而显象则有一种与知性的必然关系。
