Well, it's skewed toward the household and community, and away from workplaces. But men were also more economically-active within their homes and communities, and their female family members would often share in the mens' work and vice-versa. The labor-lines between the sexes were more blurred and overlapping.
For most of human history, earning money in exchange for labor was extremely rare. Lots of people didn't have any money at all, or only tiny amounts, which is why they paid their bills and taxes in sacks of grain and shoed horses and mended shirts, and stuff.
Monetary wages is more an effect of centralizing workplaces and specializing labor.
