A quantum-resistant Bitcoin transaction has been completed on mainnet, no hard fork needed. Avihu Levy at StarkWare built it, adding a quantum-resistant layer without changing Bitcoin's existing cryptography.
The method is signature grinding. It generates candidate signatures over and over, millions of times, and uses the first one that appears in a form that doesn't expose public-key material while the transaction waits in the mempool. A single transaction takes hours of computing to produce.
Catch: the format is non-standard, so ordinary nodes would simply ignore it. The transaction went straight to MARA's Slipstream service, and MARA mined it.
Levy still supports a protocol-level upgrade through a soft fork. The code is public on GitHub, and the technique was inspired by Robin Linus's Binohash.
A commenter pushes back on the item: all P2PKH transactions are quantum secure without a hardfork, and there are no known quantum algorithms against hash functions beyond Grover. Grinding targets the mempool window specifically.

it's my opinion after 3 years bashing my head against the impossibility of imparting some reason to the discussion that nostr itself is a dead end and will never go anywhere, but worse, there are fundamental errors in the cryptography of the design. it should be using a keychain with isolated identity and encryption keys (this would be trivial to design) as just a fundamental starting point. the message format should follow the standard used by email, which is start of line sentinels and plain text data segments, using base64 encoding for binary data. that's just two fundamental errors in the design, json is an awful codec for data and difficult to write an efficient codec for. the merging of identity and encryption means that when your nsec leaks, so does all of your encrypted messages, which includes not just DMs but other sensitive data.
and fundamentally, if your target is adoption by users whose technical skill is zero, users of x or facebook or instagram or tiktok, you hit the problem that they simply are not going to see the reason, or responsibly manage their cryptographic identities, and this is fundamentally something that the establishment system does not want to happen - they want to use biometrics or simple identity verification of users, and every bit of cryptographic permission and access and write control, be entirely on the other side of the network from the user. so in other words, adoption can only be of the userbase we already have on nostr. regardless of everything else you can think of, the users are going to bounce because of having to maintain control of their cryptographic keys, even if it is literally just a fucking file, or a series of 12 or 24 words, they are going to resist this as a hard wall from the get go.
