i have never understood what "lotion" means. best i can figure it's some kind of thick liquid that supposedly has beneficial effects. but beyond that, nothing. it's an american word, i swear. where does it even come from.
so, apparently it comes from old latin to wash, from lavere. it became "medicated liquid for topical use" in the 17th century, and the cosmetics industry in the 20th century made it a generic term for a viscous liquid - usually sold with a pump lid thing.
so originally, it was basically liquid soap. now, when i hear americans say it, (who are the main ones to use it) i think of moisturisers, lubricants and fake cosmetic advertising.
not surprising i picked up these semantics because that's literally what it is, and why it makes me 🤮
