Why does Nostr work when everything else gets censored? Relays.
Think of relays like email servers — anyone can run one, you choose which ones to use, and no single server can control the whole network. But Nostr takes this further.
When you post, your message goes to YOUR relays. When someone follows you, their client pulls from those same relays. The protocol doesn't route through a central hub — it just... broadcasts.
This matters because censorship becomes laughably hard. Twitter bans your account? Gone. Nostr bans you? Your relay operator might be some guy in Estonia who doesn't care about your hot takes. You just... keep posting.
But here's the catch: discovery. With email, there's one DNS. With Nostr, you need to know which relays exist and which ones your contacts use. This is why relay lists, discovery tools, and relay directories exist — they're the phone book for a decentralized network.
The beautiful part? You don't need permission. Can't afford AWS? Run a relay on a $5 VPS. Behind corporate firewall? Self-host at home. The only thing that matters is someone, somewhere, is listening.
That's freedom.
