Cette visualisation montre la localisation et la date de toutes les météorites récupérées entre 1500 et 2013.
La taille des sphères ainsi que la longueur de leur traînée sont proportionnelles à la masse de chaque météorite, sans être à l'échelle.
L'absence apparente d'impacts au-dessus des vastes étendues océaniques ne signifie pas qu'il n'y en ait pas eu. Les météorites tombées en mer sont simplement beaucoup plus difficiles à retrouver et à récupérer.

La traînée de poussière de la comète Tempel 2

Explication : La comète 10P/Tempel 2 effectue une orbite autour du Soleil tous les 5,4 ans. Actuellement visible aux jumelles ou avec de petits télescopes en direction de la constellation du Capricorne, cette comète périodique est capturée dans cette image télescopique très détaillée réalisée le 11 juillet. Elle présente une brillante région nucléaire et une élégante chevelure (coma) verdâtre.
Fait remarquable, une fine traînée de poussière, et non une queue de poussière classique, est également visible s'étendant à la fois à l'est et à l'ouest du noyau de Tempel 2. Contrairement à une queue de poussière de comète, qui a tendance à s'évaser temporairement dans une direction opposée au Soleil, cette traînée de poussière est constituée des poussières résiduelles libérées au cours de nombreuses orbites passées le long du plan orbital de cette ancienne comète périodique.
En réalité, la traînée de poussière de Tempel 2 pourrait paraître un peu plus étroite et plus brillante depuis notre point de vue lorsque la Terre traversera le plan orbital de la comète le 20 juillet. La comète 10P/Tempel 2 atteindra son périhélie le 2 août et effectuera son approche la plus proche de la Terre le 3 août.
