I think it is an intra-gender (within the same gender) competition thing. By choosing to do something they know is unattractive to the other gender, they are showing how much they are on "team women". They are not "centering men" and this is a way to demonstrate it.
It's also a display of "independence" and a way to signify outwardly which social/political group they align with. Similar to how people make clothing choices that make it indirectly clear what their politics and values are. A sundress, shaved legs, an American flag, wrap around sunglasses, or colored hair are similar indicators.
Much of womens status within their own gender is based around beauty and the perception that they can attract or get committment from highly desired men. Doing something that makes you less attractive is a way to demonstrate abundance aka "I'm still hot and desired even though I am wearing a baggy sweater, nose piercing, etc". Men similarly obtain rank in their own gender by having access to many women.
The nose ring thing is similar to but different from, for example, very long nails, excessive makeup, fake tans, or other expensive beauty treatments that men find generally find somewhere between boring and repulsive. It's not about men at all, it's about intra-gender status games, they do these things to flex on other women. The male equivalent of that is big loud trucks.
