When a society treats subjective identity as overriding biological sex, it introduces uncertainty into sex-based expectations, language, boundaries, institutions, and duties. That uncertainty can reduce trust because people no longer know whether ordinary sex classifications may be relied upon or openly acknowledged.
The chilling effect could appear in several ways:
- Men may become less willing to extend informal deference or protection when they cannot trust the category being presented.
- Women may become less secure in sex-separated spaces or institutions.
- Ordinary interactions may become more guarded because accurate perception can conflict with required language.
- Employers, schools, churches, and associations may replace organic judgment with formal rules to manage disputes.
- People may withdraw rather than risk accusation, embarrassment, or coerced participation in another person’s self-conception.
- That could weaken relations between men and women by replacing tacit trust with suspicion and bureaucratic enforcement.
A society that makes biological sex socially unintelligible or legally unspeakable risks degrading the trust, boundaries, and reciprocal duties upon which relations between men and women depend. If sustained across family, law, education, and reproduction, that degradation can become civilizational rather than merely interpersonal.
