I know because I’m at the end of it now. I preached this exact thing to myself for years and still missed stuff. Work got in the way plenty. That’s not an excuse, it’s just what happened, and I own it.

Every day shows up with opportunities and problems both, usually at the same time. The distraction is in the details. It pulls your eyes off the person right in front of you while you’re busy fighting whatever fire looks urgent.

Coinkite news responding to Mallers…
Their claim is that it wasn’t a fallback they built in on purpose. The weak PRNG was already living inside MicroPython’s runtime for unrelated things, shuffling, timing jitter. The setting meant to disable it, MICROPY_HW_ENABLE_RNG=0, didn’t do what they intended. So the runtime’s own default activated instead, because of what they’re calling a link-time error.
I want to be clear about what that does and doesn’t do. It’s a real distinction. “We built a backup plan and it failed” and “we tried to shut something off and the toggle didn’t work” are different kinds of mistakes, and if you’re trying to understand what actually happened at Coinkite, that difference is worth knowing.
What it doesn’t touch. The outcome is the same either way. Seeds generated with a fraction of the entropy they needed, for five years, unreviewed, until it cost people real money. Precision about intent isn’t the same as resolution of impact.
Read it yourself. Decide where the line is for you between an explanation and an excuse. I don’t think it has to be one or the other, and I don’t think Coinkite gets to decide that for you either.

Reflections of a different kind…
An agenda driven “actor” in a visibility economy almost never announces themselves. They don’t show up cartoonishly villainous. They show up helpful. Early. Generous with their time, generous with their zaps, quick to defend people publicly when it costs them nothing and quick to build goodwill that they can spend later, when it costs them something real. They learn the language of the community faster than anyone, because sounding like you belong is the actual product they’re building, long before you find out what they’re selling.
And critically, they understand something most sincere posters never think about strategically. They understand that once you’ve been visibly, generously present in a community for long enough, people extend you a form of credit. Doubt gets suspended. Benefit goes to you, automatically, because you’ve paid into the social account for years. That credit is exactly what gets cashed in when something eventually goes wrong, when a decision needs defending, when a silence needs explaining, when a question needs to not be asked too loudly.
This week, watching a real security failure unfold in real time, I saw this play out in miniature, over and over. People who’d built years of goodwill got the benefit of the doubt automatically, reflexively, from people who otherwise pride themselves on verifying everything. Meanwhile people with zero history, zero followers, just a technical finding and a GitHub link, got picked apart line by line before anybody took them seriously. That’s backwards. That’s exactly backwards from how verification is supposed to work, and it happened because visibility had quietly become a stand in for credibility somewhere along the way, for all of us, myself included.
I’m not telling you to distrust everyone with a following. That’s paranoid and it’s also just wrong, plenty of people earn a following the honest way. I’m telling you that a following is not evidence of anything except that a lot of people were willing to engage. That’s it. That’s all it proves. It doesn’t prove honesty. It doesn’t prove competence. It doesn’t prove the person doesn’t have something they’re not telling you

There’s a real upside to how visible this all is. You comment on the right post, zap the right person, show up consistently, and people actually see you. Opportunities open up that never would have in a closed room. That part’s genuinely good, and it’s part of why this space works the way it does.
But that same visibility also has a cost. When you’re chasing being seen, liking, zapping, commenting to stay in someone’s orbit, it’s easy to stop asking who you’re actually orbiting. Attention becomes the goal instead of the relationship. And that’s exactly the gap people with an agenda are looking for. They don’t need you to trust them completely. They just need you distracted enough by the visibility game that you stop checking who’s using who.
Not saying don’t engage. Just saying know why you’re doing it. There’s a difference between building something with someone and performing proximity to them for what it gets you. One of those protects you. The other one is how people get used without ever noticing it happened..

Living on borrowed time, man, and most people still walk around like they got a lease with no end date. Nobody’s gonna tell you when it’s up.
You don’t just wake up wise one day. You notice sh*t. Some mistake you made, something someone said that pissed you off till you actually sat with it and realized, damn, they were right. Doesn’t feel like learning in the moment. Feels like a bad day, or some argument you can’t stop replaying in your head.
Then a few years go by and you’re just… not the same person anymore. Can’t even point to the day it happened, cause there wasn’t one. You just kept paying attention when it would’ve been easier not to.
So pay attention. Whatever it hands you, take the lesson and keep moving.

This week left casualties that don’t fit neatly into one category. Monetary casualties, obviously, savings that took years to build gone in minutes. Integrity casualties, the kind that don’t show up on a chain but cost just as much, trust between people who built things together, trust in a device marketed as the safest place to hold your life’s work. And quieter than either, life casualties. Plans delayed. Families affected. Some of that we’ll never see posted because grief doesn’t always announce itself.
Anger is earned here. So is sadness, and so is confusion. Nobody owes anyone a calm reaction to losing what they worked for.
This is a historical moment in Bitcoin’s history, and not the kind anyone wanted to write about. There will be division over it. Not everyone, but enough, and Nostr is small enough that enough matters more here than it would somewhere bigger.
Accountability isn’t complicated, even when the technical story is. Not everyone at the front of Coinkite carries equal responsibility for what happened in the code. Most people there had nothing to do with a commit made years before they clocked in. But responsibility and honesty aren’t the same ask. Coming forward and telling the truth, plainly, about what you knew and when, or admitting what you genuinely don’t know, and saying you’re sorry without qualifying it into nothing, that goes further in a culture this soaked in distrust than any advisory or firmware patch will. Frighteningly so, because right now silence reads as guilt whether it’s earned or not, and that’s corrosive for everyone still standing here.
So where do we go from here, as the people still building this thing.
We keep verifying, especially when it’s uncomfortable, especially when it’s someone we like. We keep asking direct questions without turning every question into a verdict before it’s answered. We hold the people responsible for code accountable to the code, and we hold ourselves accountable to fairness while we do it. We remember that self custody was never a promise of perfection, it was a promise that the responsibility, and the power, stays with you instead of a bank. That promise held even this week. Painfully, expensively, but out in the open, the way it’s supposed to work when it works.
Bitcoin doesn’t need everyone to agree on how angry to be. It needs everyone to keep showing up, keep checking their own work, and keep choosing honesty over comfort when it’s their turn to speak.
That’s the whole ask. Nothing more complicated than that.
