“Bring you back to yourself” and “your own authority” isn’t biblical language. Scripture never points you back to yourself as the source of truth. It points you to Christ and to what’s written.
A teacher who makes you feel like you’re your own authority is actually a different problem than a legalistic pastor who hoards interpretation. Both can be false shepherds, just in opposite directions.

Where I’d stop you is the “walk alone with Christ to the cross” part. Testing false shepherds and finding real ones, yes, do that, keep doing that. But walking alone isn’t the goal even when you’ve been burned. Christ didn’t design this as a solo project. Even the Bereans who tested everything against Scripture were still doing it as a body, together, checking each other. Hebrews doesn’t say gather with fellow believers only when it’s safe, it says don’t give up meeting together, especially because people fail you.
So maybe the real answer isn’t no flock and it isn’t the false ones you already found. It’s keep looking until you find shepherds who actually do what you just described, point you back to the Word and teach you to test it yourself. That flock exists. Don’t stop at “none of them work” when you’ve only tested two

False shepherds are real, no argument there. Jeremiah and Ezekiel both tear into pastors who feed themselves and starve the flock. But that’s exactly why “so skip church” doesn’t follow.
The Bible already told us frauds would show up in leadership. It never said the answer was going it alone, it said find a true shepherd and test everything against the Word yourself, like the Bereans did in Acts 17. And if all you got handed was “just pray about it” with nothing behind it, that’s the church dropping the ball on something it’s actually commanded to do. James doesn’t leave wiggle room here: faith that doesn’t show up for people in need isn’t real faith, it’s dead (James 2:14-17).
Bad shepherds aren’t a reason to walk away from the flock. They’re a reason to go find people who’ll actually feed you the Word and show up when it counts. Cutting yourself off after getting hurt by church is the one thing Hebrews 10:25 specifically warns against.
