Last Notes npub1e9xty8eww57a3npv2vfl5cel567cd0k4stqu89aa6l0undk0pr8shxmsz2 Chris Trottier **Daredevil – Hell Breaks Loose**\ 2024 • Marvel Comics\ Written by Saladin Ahmed\ Art by Aaron Kruder, Farid Karami, Germán Peralta & Jesus Aburtov\ I’ve been neglecting fiction for the past few months. It used to be important to me. Still is. But picking it back up has been hard. So I figured I’d crawl back into the mess with comic books borrowed from the library. Something quick to read, with a deadline hanging over me so I actually have to get the damn thing done. And I picked five issues of *Daredevil*. Bad move. I’ve always liked Daredevil. He’s kind of the middle class Batman. Batman is filthy rich and has every damn resource imaginable. Daredevil is a blind lawyer who makes do with enhanced senses and acrobatics. I even enjoyed that mid-2000s movie with Ben Affleck. But this? Matt Murdock isn’t a lawyer anymore. He’s a Roman Catholic priest. He’s also taking care of a home for juvenile delinquents. And *man*, is this stuff on the nose. Matt Murdock dresses up like a DEVIL and now he’s a PRIEST? And he performs EXORCISMS on villains?! Come on. I think I know why I’ve stopped enjoying American comics. They try so damn hard to be edgy and dark that they squeeze all the fun out of the room. At least comics in the ’80s had some camp kicking around to give the darkness a little colour. This is just overbearing. And after all five issues, I got *no* resolution. I know why. They want me to read the next comic. And then the next one. And then the next one. But I’m out of patience. Reading this thing felt like running through quicksand. I’m done. What a waste of time. https://atomicpoet.org/media/e6fa35cd96fc91a7b6fed8169857a919141177e447b2aa4b46ac8aec15629de2.HEIC npub1e9xty8eww57a3npv2vfl5cel567cd0k4stqu89aa6l0undk0pr8shxmsz2 Chris Trottier @[email protected] Have you heard this song from Aaron Frazer yet? I think this would totally be up your alley. I’m glad the Neo-Soul movement is still going strong after Charles Bradley and Sharon Jones passed on. https://youtu.be/sv1-XxN0Yn8 npub1e9xty8eww57a3npv2vfl5cel567cd0k4stqu89aa6l0undk0pr8shxmsz2 Chris Trottier Funko Pops are to Millennials what Precious Moments are to Boomers. There, I said it! npub1e9xty8eww57a3npv2vfl5cel567cd0k4stqu89aa6l0undk0pr8shxmsz2 Chris Trottier I have several portable CD players, but this KLIM Discover is my favourite. First off, you can SEE the disc spin. Most CD players hide the damn thing. But in a world where music increasingly comes out of nowhere and lives nowhere, I like seeing the physical media actually doing the work. The disc is right there, spinning its guts out. Also: wood grain. I grew up with wood grain TV sets, turntables, and video game consoles. So yeah, slap fake wood on some electronics and apparently I’m already halfway sold. Then the features start getting ridiculous. One headphone jack? Fine. TWO headphone jacks? FM radio? Sure. FM transmitter too? Plays MP3s? Records to MP3? What the hell did they cram into this thing? It also has a demonstrably better DAC than my Sony Walkman CD player. The Sony gives me ear fatigue, which is why I stopped using it. This one sounds markedly better—as long as I stick with wired headphones. And then there’s the killer feature: a built-in rechargeable battery. No digging around for AA batteries. No opening the drawer and finding two dead ones staring back at me. That alone is one hell of a quality-of-life improvement. https://atomicpoet.org/media/1fac23f33c406ddea3c68751addbd9ad57d3c5d091661da79c359bf5d4258ae7.jpeg npub1e9xty8eww57a3npv2vfl5cel567cd0k4stqu89aa6l0undk0pr8shxmsz2 Chris Trottier *District 9* on DVD. Finally, I watched this damn film. I’ve been wanting to see it ever since it was released in theatres, but I just never found the bandwidth to make it happen. This time, I sat down in my darkened home theatre and really took the whole thing in. And damn, this is one of the most original sci-fi films I’ve ever seen. It flips a bunch of old sci-fi clichés right on their heads. Usually, when aliens arrive on Earth, they’re invaders. But what if they’re refugees? And what if we humans do what we often do and stick them in a refugee camp indefinitely? That camp is District 9. Twenty years after the aliens arrive, a bumbling bureaucrat named Wikus van de Merwe gets the job of evicting them from District 9 and pushing them somewhere else. Then he starts walking through the place. And things go BAD. Massively bad. What happens next kicks off a chain reaction that doesn’t just change Wikus’s life. It changes *everything*. Now, a lot of movies with this setup would probably hammer you over the head with a political message about helping people in need. *District 9* doesn’t make it that easy. Like real life, the whole thing is messier than that. A bunch of questions are left hanging, and you’re forced to sit there and figure out what you think is likely to happen after the movie ends. That’s exactly why I’m glad there hasn’t been a sequel. The uncertainty is part of what makes the movie so damn compelling. Definitely a must-see for sci-fi fans. https://atomicpoet.org/media/b8ee0ba08aea3f3f816dfef4ba93892ab639f0dabe7adc5a0875f0b5d3882c22.jpg npub1e9xty8eww57a3npv2vfl5cel567cd0k4stqu89aa6l0undk0pr8shxmsz2 Chris Trottier I’m convinced performative liberalism on social media helped wreck the American Left. Republicans figured out that a lot of people don’t actually want the fight. They want the dopamine hit of looking like they’re fighting. They post, they grandstand, they get to feel righteous for five minutes, and there’s the dopamine rush they came for. And once people got that dopamine from a screen, they had less reason to get out in the street and demand actual change. npub1e9xty8eww57a3npv2vfl5cel567cd0k4stqu89aa6l0undk0pr8shxmsz2 Chris Trottier What music format do you prefer? I just did a blind test, and the winner for me was reel-to-reel tape, followed by Apple Lossless. But here’s the part that surprised me: vinyl came DEAD LAST for sound quality. I found it pretty mid. Less brightness. Less bass. Just not as much life coming through. I actually preferred cassette to vinyl, although I think cassette could have done better with higher quality tape and a better deck. But I get what this test was showing: ordinary consumer-grade cassette equipment. And with a setup like that, yeah, you definitely lose some of the top end. Still, cassette beat vinyl for me. And this test also made me feel even better about completely avoiding Spotify. I already hate the way they fool around with the original masters, and after hearing the differences blind, I’m even less interested. https://youtu.be/6iohmhZWDNo npub1e9xty8eww57a3npv2vfl5cel567cd0k4stqu89aa6l0undk0pr8shxmsz2 Chris Trottier Turns out, I love Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night. I like it better than Castlevania. The caveat being I never played Castlevania past the 16-bit era, with the exception of Castlevania: Grimoire of Souls—which was just removed from Apple Arcade. But Bloodstained is quite a tight game. I like the map and inventory system. And the boss fights are quite challenging. I also think Bloodstained has a better story than Castlevania with more compelling characters too. https://atomicpoet.org/media/65975dcd5d41f01ae7423038b20fb1de7e6820180b356c54eb112f81b2c1e0c5.mp4 npub1e9xty8eww57a3npv2vfl5cel567cd0k4stqu89aa6l0undk0pr8shxmsz2 Chris Trottier Okay, have you looked deeply into Hermeticism? npub1e9xty8eww57a3npv2vfl5cel567cd0k4stqu89aa6l0undk0pr8shxmsz2 Chris Trottier The Internet is what you make of it. I constantly hear people moaning that the whole thing is nothing but AI slop now. Meanwhile, today I discovered the ’90s Filipino ska band Put3Ska, and they KICK ASS. The only reason I know about them is because I’m always digital crate digging. I go looking for obscurities on purpose. If you let AI-based algorithms do all your discovering for you, then yeah, you’re probably going to get slop. But if you actually use your brain and dig into the stuff that interests you, there’s gold all over the damn place. https://youtu.be/QwZ3462SLi4 npub1e9xty8eww57a3npv2vfl5cel567cd0k4stqu89aa6l0undk0pr8shxmsz2 Chris Trottier “Happy Birthday” by Altered Images This is a perfect example of how completely ridiculous the vinyl market has become. Back in 2010, I bought this for $6.99. The sticker is still sitting right there on the sleeve. I checked Amazon just now. Cheapest copy: $62.84. Discogs for a used copy? $48.04. DAMN. I’m glad I grabbed this thing when I did because Altered Images is one of my favourite post-punk bands. *Happy Birthday* came out in 1981, and it wasn’t just post-punk either. There’s twee in there. Jangle pop. Goth. All of it rattling around together. And I love Clare Grogan’s vocals. She has this bubbly effervescence that’s almost the complete opposite of Siouxsie Sioux, which makes it pretty funny that Grogan and two other members of Altered Images had once belonged to the official Siouxsie Sioux fan club. What really gets me is how much she can change. One song, she’s sugary sweet. Another song, she can cut your head off. *Happy Birthday* was a success in the UK. The title track hit number 2 on the Singles Chart and became the band’s biggest hit. The album itself peaked at 26. It’s now regarded as a post-punk classic and has been reissued several times on CD and vinyl. I’ve been listening to this band since I was 22 years old. Thanks to the Internet, I had just discovered post-punk and suddenly had access to all these great Scottish bands from the early ’80s, including Josef K and Orange Juice. I remember collecting a pile of songs I found, making my own compilation, and taping the whole thing with my boombox. So when I finally got *Happy Birthday* on vinyl, I was thrilled. Eventually I introduced my daughter to it too. She loves Altered Images. https://atomicpoet.org/media/d8df07215b8b954e0b4ec6c18986c3caa34b70407882a8ee62c5feac24bba526.jpg npub1e9xty8eww57a3npv2vfl5cel567cd0k4stqu89aa6l0undk0pr8shxmsz2 Chris Trottier Today’s tea is blooming green tea. And no, that name is not screwing around. This thing literally BLOOMS when you hit it with hot water heated to 80C. But not hotter—otherwise it gets bitter. Give it about five minutes and the tight little ball starts coming apart, leaves unfurling until there’s a damn flower sitting in the pot. And that ball is basically a bouquet. Green tea, jasmine, marigold, chrysanthemum, with amaranth sitting right in the middle like the star of the show. Best part? It isn’t just some pretty little gimmick. The tea tastes amazing. This is one of the best tea blends you can find. You get that grassy green tea freshness, earthy undertones, honey sweetness, and then a clean finish that doesn’t hang around chewing on your tongue. And these things are CHEAP. $2 per blooming tea ball. That is drastically less than plenty of so-called “premium” teas that show up wearing a fancy label and asking for your wallet. If you’ve got company over, blooming tea is a complete show stopper. Put one in a glass teapot, get everybody around it, and watch the thing open up right in front of you. Kids love it too. And it’s a great way to introduce them to tea because there’s actually something happening in the pot besides brown water getting browner. I’m especially happy to have this today because yesterday I drank one of the worst teas I’ve ever had. This right here? THIS is the answer to that atrocity. https://atomicpoet.org/media/6d23f4379c0ae5bc82ce381bc8d734f1e3b717e39d9715f8e90e302fb88c73cb.jpeg npub1e9xty8eww57a3npv2vfl5cel567cd0k4stqu89aa6l0undk0pr8shxmsz2 Chris Trottier Never voted Liberal in my life—until last election. I have absolutely no love for the Liberal Party. I loathe Justin Trudeau. But every damn day, I’m glad I parked my vote with Carney, because he’s doing the one thing I wanted him to do: stand up to Trump instead of rolling over for him. That alone was worth the vote. npub1e9xty8eww57a3npv2vfl5cel567cd0k4stqu89aa6l0undk0pr8shxmsz2 Chris Trottier I’m listening to Lisa Stansfield’s debut album, *Affection*, for the first time. Until now, she was basically one song to me: “All Around the World.” That thing was EVERYWHERE. Radio, stores, cars. Somewhere in the wallpaper of the late 80s, drilling itself into my skull while I barely noticed. At the time, I just thought: dance song. Next. I wasn’t into dance music then, so Lisa Stansfield became a name attached to a giant hit and nothing more. I didn’t even know she was British. I figured New York. Maybe Chicago. Wrong. *Affection* is a killer record. It's got elements of R&B, soul, house, new jack swing. A little jazz stink around the edges too. And the whole thing *moves*. A lot of 80s records have aged like milk under a heat lamp. Too much treble and reverb. Drums exploding in empty warehouses. Bass apparently declared illegal. *Affection* sounds late-80s, but in all the good ways. The drums have that gated WHACK without turning stupid. The high end shines instead of slicing your ears off. And there is *bass*. Yes, real bass. Thank God. Even better, the instruments have room to crawl around. Nothing is smashed flat. You can hear the drums, bass, keys, horns, all sitting in their own little patch of air. Then Lisa opens her mouth. That’s the real monster. She's got a big, thick voice. Runs that actually go somewhere. Plenty of muscle, but there’s dirt and feeling in it too. When *Affection* came out, critics definitely noticed. Even Robert Christgau, professional grouch, gave it a good review and compared her favourably with Martha Reeves and Teddy Pendergrass. I can hear why. What surprises me is how completely Lisa Stansfield seems to have fallen through the floor here in Vancouver. I dig through record stores constantly and almost never see her. And CDs in thrift stores? There's nothing. Yet she seems to have stuck around much more strongly with R&B listeners, particularly Black audiences. Like Teena Marie, she became one of those rare white singers who could walk into R&B without sounding like a tourist. There’s footage of Stansfield performing at the Apollo Theatre and the crowd goes *nuts*. Now I get it. I just wish teenage me had stopped treating “All Around the World” like wallpaper long enough to hear the woman singing the damn thing. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hOJKwwXb-9Q npub1e9xty8eww57a3npv2vfl5cel567cd0k4stqu89aa6l0undk0pr8shxmsz2 Chris Trottier Well, I just saw something rotten. A VR game where a guy crawls into a cave, gets stuck, and dies there. Nope, I don't like this at all. Too tight. Can’t turn. Can’t back out. Rock on your chest. Rock on your ass. Nothing but dirt and your own stupid breathing. Now my nerves are buzzing like flies. I need brain bleach. I need grass, wind, sky. A big dumb meadow with NOTHING over my head. And spelunking? Forget it. Earth can keep its holes. npub1e9xty8eww57a3npv2vfl5cel567cd0k4stqu89aa6l0undk0pr8shxmsz2 Chris Trottier I disagree. 1996 was way edgier than now. npub1e9xty8eww57a3npv2vfl5cel567cd0k4stqu89aa6l0undk0pr8shxmsz2 Chris Trottier Censorship is getting ridiculous. Just saw a billboard for Odoo: “Business software that doesn’t s*ck.” S*ck? We’re afraid of “suck” now? This is a word with the raw sexual menace of a vacuum cleaner. Straws suck. Mosquitoes suck. Bad movies suck. Kid Rock sucks. Nobody died. If you’re that scared of the word, just say “awful.” But no! Odoo wanted edge. A little danger. A little switchblade in the advertisement. Then they replaced the blade with a butter knife. “Doesn’t s*ck.” Baby, you sucked the suck right out of suck. Now I want MORE censorship. Censor everything. Bic*cle. Gl*ss. H*ppy. That last one is good because nobody knows whether I’m experiencing joy or warning them about hippies or describing a taste in beer. Enough with this coy little typographical striptease. If you want to say the word, SAY THE GODDAMN WORD. Give me the vowels. Give me the consonants. Give me language with its pants off. And if somebody clutches their pearls? Let ’em clutch. npub1e9xty8eww57a3npv2vfl5cel567cd0k4stqu89aa6l0undk0pr8shxmsz2 Chris Trottier Often times, I get people asking me, "Chris, why do you still have an MP3 player?" Well, there's practical considerations. My smartphone only has 64GB of storage. That phone has to store apps, photos, videos, documents, voice memos, and health data. Putting *all* my music there makes little sense. "But dude, streaming exists." That's nice until you're in a dead zone. Or you're in the mountains. Or you're on the ferry. Or on an airplane. Or really, just don't want to be interrupted because the Internet has given up the ghost. However, the other reason is that I simply like MP3 players. And it's for the same reason I like vinyl, cassettes, and CDs. The medium itself is the point. Leaving your phone at home and carrying your entire music library with you while out on a walk? Just put shuffle on, and go where the wind takes you. That's freedom. #note1ehf…ges8 npub1e9xty8eww57a3npv2vfl5cel567cd0k4stqu89aa6l0undk0pr8shxmsz2 Chris Trottier Innioasis Y1 is on the left, FiiO X1 is on the right. The FiiO is my old standby. I’ve had it for 10 years. I still use it all the time because it supports micro-SD up to 256GB, has lineout, plays lots of lossless codecs, and a great DAC. But it also has flaws. For one thing, the lineout shares a port with the headphone jack—which puts you at risk for serious ear damage if you’re not careful. Also, a mechanical wheel is not a clickwheel, so it’s not exactly iPod-like. Finally, there’s no Bluetooth—which, though flawed, has real conveniences. The Innioasis does not have the storage capacity of the X1 because it has no micro-SD slot, this is true. And there’s no lineout. But its DAC is pretty decent, has an actual clickwheel and uses Rockbox for its UI. This makes it pretty close to a modern iPod. And what’s more, it’s got better battery life than the X1—which was never great to begin with. I likely will never get rid of the X1. Too many memories. So much wonderful music on that device. It represents a decade of my life. But damn, isn’t it nice to have something like an iPod again. https://atomicpoet.org/media/1dce1de23aa6ee7efa02b5f65141bea94acd180c45945ec9f77bd353f6b776fb.jpeg npub1e9xty8eww57a3npv2vfl5cel567cd0k4stqu89aa6l0undk0pr8shxmsz2 Chris Trottier Many things I thought are mainstream apparently aren't. For example, The Velvet Underground. Thy are as mainstream as the Beatles or Michael Jackson. So I thought. If that banana keeps showing up on t-shirts everywhere, that's the definition of mainstream, right? Wrong. I casually name dropped them on Reddit one day, and everyone thought I was being this hipster who just likes things because they're obscure. Meanwhile, that band entered the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 1996. And they got an Apple TV+ documentary about them. Metallica decided to collaborate with Lou Reed on one of the most infamous albums ever made. I mention this because I'm like this about a lot of things. Everyone knows the Sugar Hill Gang, right? And also the Ramones. And Mariya Takeuchi. And Orbital. And Dwight Yoakam. And Weezer. And Wu Tang Clan. And The Strokes. But no. The world is full of two kinds of people: folks who only live in the mainstream and never leave because they always need to be "current" and "with it"; and folks who are so deeply devoted to their subculture and niche, that everything outside it is somehow wrong. Metalheads, I'm looking at you. I think we all owe to ourselves to learn the history of music, who made it, why it got made, and how we arrived at *now*. That means leaving our little bubbles and being a little curious. #note13h0…zssz npub1e9xty8eww57a3npv2vfl5cel567cd0k4stqu89aa6l0undk0pr8shxmsz2 Chris Trottier This is how I remember the 2000s, and it's strange that this music is mostly forgotten. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DiqpkTFjsMQ npub1e9xty8eww57a3npv2vfl5cel567cd0k4stqu89aa6l0undk0pr8shxmsz2 Chris Trottier Now listening to my brand new “iPod” in my car. And I have a few more thoughts that I really do need to express. The iPod means a lot more to me than any other technological device I’ve ever owned. It was the first thing I bought when I finally moved out of my parents’ house. Something to say, “I have arrived.” Years later, my wife bought me an iPod Classic for our first anniversary. She even mimeographed it. Then one day, I forgot to remove it from my car—left it overnight—and a thief stole it! This was devastating. Because that iPod contained my life. It was my personal soundtrack. It contained every song I ever loved. What I used when my wife and I travelled anywhere. What made working life tolerable as I hunkered down with a low-paying job. And I also feel, when the iPod was current, it was the last time culture-at-large cared about music. Sure, the music industry can yimmer yammer about how it enabled piracy. But now everyone legally streams—and it’s all background noise. Nobody cares. At least when we had iPods, it was our personal libraries. A way to hear music without distractions. A device that contained our real taste—not chosen by an algorithm. I, for one, refuse to let the iPod go away. https://atomicpoet.org/media/9a33b96bb65accde5f6a9ce9ea598f0e3744c89a352867909f914204259ec687.jpeg npub1e9xty8eww57a3npv2vfl5cel567cd0k4stqu89aa6l0undk0pr8shxmsz2 Chris Trottier Finally found an MP3 player with a clickwheel—NOT MADE BY APPLE!—that works with Rockbox! To be clear, I don’t know if this is good—I’m not endorsing this. But it’s worth testing out to see if there’s FINALLY an affordable non-Apple MP3 player with a clickwheel. (Not providing a link until I test this for myself) https://atomicpoet.org/media/fed441cf9e103db9cad2d86f84985af380764d49796d6862be4b9bd17225d856.jpeg npub1e9xty8eww57a3npv2vfl5cel567cd0k4stqu89aa6l0undk0pr8shxmsz2 Chris Trottier Now watching the movie Tommy to figure out if it’s better than the album. npub1e9xty8eww57a3npv2vfl5cel567cd0k4stqu89aa6l0undk0pr8shxmsz2 Chris Trottier Today is the last day I’m hearing The Who album “Tommy” on vinyl which, though it has some good songs, is way too long because of all the god damn filler. It’s an hour and 15 minutes long. Like, I get that this is one of the first rock operas ever made. But just because you were first and sold gazillion copies doesn’t mean it’s not hard to sit through. The story isn’t particularly good. It’s full of hippy dippy mystic bullshit. The main character is deaf and blind—but not really because it’s psychosomatic? Come on! However, I haven’t seen the movie. And from Jay I hear, it’s much improved. So maybe I’ll see it later and see if that’s true. npub1e9xty8eww57a3npv2vfl5cel567cd0k4stqu89aa6l0undk0pr8shxmsz2 Chris Trottier Just saw Vancouver Bandits vs. Winnipeg Sea Bears. What a game! Vancouver was behind for most of the game until they got hot in the 4th quarter. People need to support their local #CEBL team. If Canadians can build a good enough domestic league, we might succeed better at #basketball. Perhaps win a few medals at the Olympics. Wouldn't it be good if we were good at a game a Canadian invented? I can’t speak for other men, but I can tell you why I’m leery. Whenever I publicly compliment my wife on social media, I run the risk of five things happening—and none of them are good. First, I get people who hate when I express happiness. They feel like I’m rubbing it in their faces, and that I’m mocking their unhappiness. And to them, this cannot stand. Then I get people who nitpick—find something critique. Maybe one of us isn’t attractive enough or virtuous enough or we’re just “wrong”. I have to also contend with creepy dudes. Assholes who ask way too much information for their own puerile needs. Then get testy when I tell them it’s none of their business. As well, there’s women who see marriage as a challenge. So they rush into DMs to test the waters. And it’s embarrassing. Finally, if you keep talking up your wife, after awhile it feels like a performance. And it’s no fun to perform a relationship in public. Marriage ain’t an act. I suspect lots of men have this same experience. So they shut up. And that’s why those who don’t like their wives tend to be the loudest on social media. npub1e9xty8eww57a3npv2vfl5cel567cd0k4stqu89aa6l0undk0pr8shxmsz2 Chris Trottier This #WorldCup Final is brutal to watch! For 14 days straight. Cardio and heavy weights. That’s not counting the 10,000 or more steps a day I did exploring Seoul. I put myself through hell. To the point that I fell asleep in the middle of the day. Before I went back to the gym. And tomorrow, one more session. Then I’m on a 15 hour flight. When I can hopefully recover. It’s not as big as China or Japan’s. But the tea they do grow—specifically on Jeju Island—is fantastic. In Seoul, Osulloc Tea House 1979 specializes in Korean tea. Located in the Yongsan neighbourhood, they offer a variety of Jeju Island teas: green, oolong, black, post-fermented. And they’re excellent. Sadly, because South Korea is mostly a coffee culture, their own teas are not so well known. https://atomicpoet.org/media/62031e0e6296ba98c513e505fdf48df311a3054ad46a5a34982402996c25f775.jpeg npub1e9xty8eww57a3npv2vfl5cel567cd0k4stqu89aa6l0undk0pr8shxmsz2 Chris Trottier When people look at me, they often think, “God, what a fattie…” Let me tell you, this fattie can routinely lift a fridge—no problem. npub1e9xty8eww57a3npv2vfl5cel567cd0k4stqu89aa6l0undk0pr8shxmsz2 Chris Trottier What I mean is: In Japan, if you’re by yourself, people likely won’t talk to you because they don’t want to disturb you. But in Korea, people are generally much more upfront and expressive with their curiosity. I was looking forward to a dark tea. But due to an “experiment”, I overcaffeinated myself. So I’ll be honest. Peppermint is not something I typically drink, nor am I looking forward to this. It’s my wife’s favourite tisane, which is why we have it. But it’s something in my pantry that I haven’t drank yet. And more importantly, it contains no caffeine. Given that this is from a discount supermarket brand, expectations are low. Actually, it’s been in my pantry for awhile so this isn’t exactly fresh either. Brewing from a teabag in a mug. I’ll be steeping this with boiled water for two minutes. The actual name for soccer is "association football". This is to be differentiated from the *other* forms of football like rugby union football, rugby league football, Gaelic football, Aussie-rules football, American football, and Canadian football. And *all* forms of football are descended from medieval British folk football, with the most famous form—called mob football—still played in Ashbourne in England. Anyway, to differentiate it from other forms of football, the Victorian English called it "assoccer". This was truncated to "soccer". This was imported to USA, Canada, and Australia where it is still called soccer today. But originally, it was the English who called it "soccer". Being from Canada, I call it "soccer" because "football" refers to Canadian football. We're the country that invented the gridiron variety of football. npub1e9xty8eww57a3npv2vfl5cel567cd0k4stqu89aa6l0undk0pr8shxmsz2 Chris Trottier Great goal by Croatia! He did the film scores to The Piano and Gattaca. However, In Re Don Giovanni is where things get really rollicking. Almost punk is in its energy. So today, I'll be drinking Pedernales green yaupon loose leaf "tea". Again this is not actually tea. It's yaupon, a caffeinated beverage that's different from tea. The only plant native to North America that naturally produces caffeine. https://atomicpoet.org/media/69b089ac41db8afda277802c96cf57616fa6595d80f64e6a1b60d529924982ee.jpg #note195n…aw8e npub1e9xty8eww57a3npv2vfl5cel567cd0k4stqu89aa6l0undk0pr8shxmsz2 Chris Trottier Today’s tea is Texas Natice Yaupon Tea. The package is a misnomer because this is not tea. It’s yaupon. And I’m excited as hell about yaupon. You see, yaupon is the only plant native to North America that naturally produces caffeine. It’s been consumed as a beverage by indigenous people for eons. Hell, this particular yaupon I’m holding was harvested and packaged by Native folk. There’s even a badge on the box that says “Made/Produced by American Indians”. Yaupon should be huge. It’s a nice hardy plant that grows all over the southern USA. So why isn’t it in everyone’s pantry? Because white people have suppressed it in favour of coffee and tea. Ridiculously, William Aiton—a British botanist acting in the interest of the royal botanical gardens—officially named the plant “Ilex vomitoria” just so everyone would think it’s disgusting when it’s clearly not. Promoting a free, native, and abundant caffeinated alternative growing wild in the Americas? The British couldn’t have that happen. That’s a threat to their bottom line. Now tea, something you import and must pay taxes on, that’s the mark of civilization. No way this will come back to haunt the British. Nope, not at all. Nevertheless, the naming gambit worked. It hurt the commercial prospects for Yaupon. The final blow came with the U.S. government’s forced removal of Cherokee, Creek, and other Southeastern tribes off their ancestral lands during the Trail of Tears. This severed many indigenous peoples’ connections with yaupon. But you can’t keep a good caffeinated beverage down. 15 years ago, yaupon has been reclaimed by American farmers leading to a resurgence. And Native Americans are leading the way. You can’t keep now order it easily online. This particular yaupon is USDA certified, regenerative organic certified, and kosher. And while as a Canadian, I’m not too fond of the USA right now, I will always support my indigenous brothers and sisters who are making something great. One neat thing about yaupon is that, unlike tea, it has no tannins. Which means it’s incredibly forgiving to brew and doesn’t get bitter. You simply cannot over-steep it. So today, I’m putting in 1tsp of yaupon into a pot, adding boiling water, and steeping it for 5 minutes. I may try gongfu some day, but again, this is not tea. I’m therefore going to see what a solid infusion gets me. https://atomicpoet.org/media/52bfe4c9f10ea0d37252a1c11dcf635f43d7790e97452995d7de34a795fa7cf0.jpeg npub1e9xty8eww57a3npv2vfl5cel567cd0k4stqu89aa6l0undk0pr8shxmsz2 Chris Trottier I'm so glad that it never occurred to 10-year-old me that glue could have got me high. #note1ze4…ulh2 npub1e9xty8eww57a3npv2vfl5cel567cd0k4stqu89aa6l0undk0pr8shxmsz2 Chris Trottier Now catching up with Scotland vs. Haiti. This isn’t that notable. There’s lots of edgelord games out there made for and by terrible people. What is notable is that, two hours after it was launched—outside Steam refund window—the dev issued a patch that turned all the slaves white. This upset a lot of awful people who bought the game with the expectation that they could enslave black people only to realize they could no longer do this. They were now stuck with white slaves. The whole thing was a rug pull. As of May 24, the dev has since removed the game from Steam, claiming he’s said everything he wanted to say. But before it was removed, this game had overwhelmingly negative reviews on Steam. But not because it was racist. It’s selling for $15 at a thrift store—so I must buy it. Why my excitement? Because this absolute unit plays the ill-fated CED (Capacitance Electronic Disc) format. In terms of tech, CED is mind-boggling: it’s a vinyl record for video. Inside that slot goes a massive plastic caddy containing a 12-inch vinyl disc. When you push the caddy in and pull it out, the bare disc is left inside the machine. Unlike LaserDisc (which used lasers to read data optically), CED was an analog, mechanical system. It used a diamond stylus riding in microscopic grooves, akin to a standard phonograph record. The story behind this machine is one of the greatest, most tragic in AV history—and directly led to the decline of RCA. It took RCA 17 years to design CED. By 1981, they spent $200M—thats $732.7M after inflation—on R&D of this product. Maybe it would have been a success if CED released in 1964, when they first started work on it. But by the time it came to market, it was competing against VHS, BetaMax, and LaserDisc. And while CEDs were cheaper to manufacture in 1981 compared to all the other home video formats, it was the most prone to failure. While it looked better than VHS under ideal situations, the reality was usually less than ideal. Just a little bit of dust caused the video to skip, loop, or violently glitch. The death knell for CED was the drastic fall in price of Beta and VHS. Their superior quality, combined with the ability to record, proved devastating for RCA. All CED players were pulled from the market by 1984, three years after their introduction. RCA would soon no longer be a major tech company. This SelectaVision is a remnant of that history. https://atomicpoet.org/media/a87e1871bede6f6b5e753b6b36a09db4d55c00fc68a5e843693c6e6379db9a63.jpeg npub1e9xty8eww57a3npv2vfl5cel567cd0k4stqu89aa6l0undk0pr8shxmsz2 Chris Trottier This thread has created a lot of debate. It's very easy for men to think, "We're awful, so let's never approach or talk to women ever." But this actually does nothing except isolate women, create the environment for old boys clubs. Even if your intention is otherwise, all-men's social environments almost always become festering cesspools of misogyny. I think the sane approach is to use your social awareness and assess *which* woman wants to blatantly talk to you. Now this is hard. I know—I'm autistic, and thus mostly miss social cues. Yet even I *know* that when a woman is smiling at you, walking in your direction, then standing next to you—yeah, she's likely waiting for you to say something. Might you be wrong? Sure, but the likelihood is low. Now, are women wanting to talk to you always looking for love or sex? No, often not. But that's what conversation is for—figuring it out. And my experience is—sure, I'm just one dude on this planet, but still that counts for something—that if you bide your time within a conversation, a woman will eventually make it blatant what she wants out of you. To the point you can't ignore it anymore. When is she being blatant? When she asks you questions like, "Are you single?" or "Where are you going later tonight?" Questions like that are *not* micro-green flags. They're loud, bold *neon* green flags. At this point, it's generally okay to shoot your shot. #note1d27…w66l npub1e9xty8eww57a3npv2vfl5cel567cd0k4stqu89aa6l0undk0pr8shxmsz2 Chris Trottier Suddenly feel the need to send a fax. My stance is that are notoriously bad at detecting “micro-green flags”. How the hell does anyone know if a look is lingering or they’re just zoning out? Listen, I’m generally not a fan of arbitrary romantic or sexual signals. It is a bad idea to expect people you are interested in to be mind readers. npub1e9xty8eww57a3npv2vfl5cel567cd0k4stqu89aa6l0undk0pr8shxmsz2 Chris Trottier That’s the ticket, and those leaves look great! npub1e9xty8eww57a3npv2vfl5cel567cd0k4stqu89aa6l0undk0pr8shxmsz2 Chris Trottier Yeah, it probably would be good as a cold brew with a tiny pinch of sugar and baking soda added. npub1e9xty8eww57a3npv2vfl5cel567cd0k4stqu89aa6l0undk0pr8shxmsz2 Chris Trottier Today tea is Lime Blossom green tea blend. In my quest to drink all the tea in my house, I’m now planning to finish this entire pack today. The basis of this blend “Fair Trade Certified” jasmine green tea. Which is itself a blend of the jasmine plant with the the tea plant. But then the following is added: lemongrass, calendula petals, lemon Myrtle, pure essential oils of lime, orange extract, tangerine extract, and natural rose extract. That’s a lot of stuff. Very citrusy. And I’m wondering if I made a good decision to drink this considering I had tangerine peel pu’ehr yesterday. But I very much want to drink all of this, finish something in my pantry. I’ll be following the instructions: 1 tsp for 8oz. Steeping at 80C for 3 minutes. I don’t have much enthusiasm for this. Then again I had lots of enthusiasm for yesterday’s tea, and it didn’t live up to the excitement. So who knows what will happen. https://atomicpoet.org/media/acebcdf25ec70ccd6ec72c3b0e18e31bcb65994b67943b5c3320fd6361bee812.jpeg npub1e9xty8eww57a3npv2vfl5cel567cd0k4stqu89aa6l0undk0pr8shxmsz2 Chris Trottier What your favourite type of tea says about you: * **Black tea** – you are a creature of habit who wishes they were drinking coffee, but you prefer curry over tacos and have accepted this as your fate * **Green tea** – you follow whatever health craze is popular this month, eat a suspicious amount of sushi, and have strong opinions about rock gardens * **White tea** – you're a nudist, or you would be if your skin didn’t react to sunlight like a Victorian child seeing a ghost * **Oolong tea** – you feel weirdly attracted to mountains, and you own at least 1 goat hair sweater you describe as “honest” * **Pu'ehr tea** – you're obsessed with kung fu and believe you can harness the power of chi, mostly by hanging out in a damp wooden basement * **Yellow tea** – you're a god damn hipster who quit drinking IPAs because it went way too mainstream so you're obsessed with anything similar to a damp Victorian cloth Here’s a version closer to the style of the list: Anyway, no matter what tea you drink, the real problem is that you own a kettle and have started treating it like a small metal family member. You probably think someone is going to steal it, which is completely unhinged, because who the hell is breaking into your house for a boiled water heater? npub1e9xty8eww57a3npv2vfl5cel567cd0k4stqu89aa6l0undk0pr8shxmsz2 Chris Trottier Today’s tea is Hong Kong-style tea, which is actually 100% Ceylon black tea—but not the kind you likely know. In my attempt to drink all the tea in my house, I’m now imbibing in one of the most ridiculous teas I own. Let me explain. This tea is ultra fine. So fine that it causes particulates to fly when you open the lid. But I assure you this is neither matcha nor instant tea powder. No, you are supposed to steep this. But not for long. You cannot go gongfu with this. Nor can you go Western-style with a teabag. In Hong Kong, they use a filter that resembles pantyhose to work with this. I, of course, do not have such a filter. So I just tried an experiment: using an Aeropress—making this exactly how you make coffee. And it actually worked. Because, you don’t want to steep this for long. Even at 30 seconds, it’s strong. So I dumped two teaspoons into the Aeropress. Then I added boiling water. I timed for 30 seconds, then I used the Aeropress plunger to compress the finely ground leaves. What’s hilarious about this is that it made an even more compressed puck than my coffee. But how does it taste? Let me tell you, even at 30 seconds, you do not want to drink this by itself. Milk is absolutely required. So I put in 2tbsp of condensed milk. And finally, this thing worked well as a beverage. Which is totally fine—nobody in Hong Kong drinks this without milk. Now many of you wonder if I hate “strong” teas, preferring delicate green and oolong instead. But this—this absolutely puts your English Breakfasts and a builder’s brews to shame. It is so strong that even a 30 second steep makes it stronger than coffee. I’m not joking. In fact, in Hong Kong, they often combine Hong Kong-style tea with coffee to make a mutant beverage known as yeunyeung. And believe it or not, the coffee takes the edge off of tea. I actually quite like this tea a lot. But it’s because it’s an example of Chinese people—colonized by the British—looking at English tea and going, “You think that’s a knife? No, this is a knife.” Trust me, this tea will knock your socks off. https://atomicpoet.org/media/354cda028d4c0b86622030a0a9cd374d57bc2ad42e9504c9dd9db84de0935c64.jpeg npub1e9xty8eww57a3npv2vfl5cel567cd0k4stqu89aa6l0undk0pr8shxmsz2 Chris Trottier Fediverse, I have a bone to pick with you regarding how you talk about the AI bubble. A good many of you think it's imminent. You've been saying this for five years now. It's going to happen any day now, you say. Just around the corner. Just wait. Problem is, people who have been far more intelligent than you have also predicted an AI bubble. Jim Chanos predicted the Enron collapse. He spent 2023 aggressively warning that data center REITs (Real Estate Investment Trusts) and hardware providers linked to the AI buildout were wildly overvalued. He was so convinced, he shorted the AI market. Instead, he closed his hedge fund after four decades in business. Jeremy Grantham spotted the 1989 Japanese asset bubble and the 2000 dot-com crash. He too predicted a post-COVID "super bubble" predicated by AI. Instead, the opposite happened. Trillions of dollars in capital were injected into the market. Michael Burry, depicted in the film the Big Short, made a legendary short selling trade based on the 2008 Great Recession. He made the most famous short-selling bet against AI, executing $187.6M in puts against Nvidia and the larger semiconductor industry. Instead, he was squeezed—forced to shut his hedge fund down. Now might there be an AI bubble? Personally, I see signs of one in the sense that companies who shouldn't be in AI have pivoted towards it. But signs are not certainties. Predicting the moment a bubble bursts is a fool's errand. And if you're unwilling to put up your own money to confirm your convictions, your conviction ain't much of a conviction at an all. To be sure, I'm not saying AI is a bed of roses that will make us all rich. A crash is always a possibility. In which case, as the Boy Scout motto says, "Be prepared". Treat a potential market crash much like you would an earthquake or a hurricane. It doesn't happen every day, but when it happens, remember your disaster training. npub1e9xty8eww57a3npv2vfl5cel567cd0k4stqu89aa6l0undk0pr8shxmsz2 Chris Trottier Today’s tea is ChaTraMue Brand Thai Tea Mix (Extra Gold). In my quest to drink all the tea in my house, many of you might find this a shocking departure from the pu’ehr and oolongs I’ve been showing off recently. This is a finely milled, heavily flavored commercial blend designed to punch through a lot of sugar, milk, and ice. ChaTraMue is most famous for its standard "Red Tin," which produces the vibrant, neon-orange Thai iced tea found in restaurants worldwide. But this Extra Gold version I have represents their premium blend. It uses a higher grade of Assam black tea and is formulated to have a much more robust, earthy tea flavour. Typically, I don’t like teabags. But there are exceptions. This is one of them because the tea is deliberately astringent so it can survive the spices and flavours: star anise, crushed tamarind seed, cardamom, and vanilla. Extra Gold is often used for iced teas. But today, I’m drinking this hot with condensed milk. First, I put a teabag in a mug. Then I pour the boiling water directly over them and let it steep for 4 to 5 minutes. Before removing the teabags, I press them firmly against the side of the mug with a spoon to extract the concentrated, dark tea and the remaining spices. Afterwards, discard the bag. While the tea is still piping hot, I add two teaspoons of condensed milk. This makes for a wonderful dessert tea. https://atomicpoet.org/media/4e990cbecaa5cdc11d9471cf9a36510a7a4312dfb06db910e58e04c14ce463bf.jpeg npub1e9xty8eww57a3npv2vfl5cel567cd0k4stqu89aa6l0undk0pr8shxmsz2 Chris Trottier If you want to know why Metro Vancouver is "running out of land", take a look at this map. "Urban growth" is only allowed on the green highlighted areas. Back in the 90s, the plan was to build for density—which was supposed to solve the affordability problem. However, detached homes became a $1 million premium. And developers decided that one bedroom condos were the answer to densification. Which—surprise!—didn't make a whole lot of sense for working families. https://atomicpoet.org/media/b3c79d91e96cc1b242f7bce3884100c3cf663023c90acc6638449f271a6d158c.png npub1e9xty8eww57a3npv2vfl5cel567cd0k4stqu89aa6l0undk0pr8shxmsz2 Chris Trottier Just want to remind you *everyone* that, weeks ago, I predicted that Las Vegas would make it to the Stanley Cup Finals. And since they're leading the Western Conference Finals 3-0, barring a historical collapse, this will happen. How did I know this? Because Las Vegas is a "no tax" team. And "no tax" teams have been in the Stanley Cup Finals for 8 of the last 10 years, having won 5 of the last 6 Stanley Cups. npub1e9xty8eww57a3npv2vfl5cel567cd0k4stqu89aa6l0undk0pr8shxmsz2 Chris Trottier MONTREAL VICTOIRE WIN THE WALTER CUP!!!
