I’m really amazed at work how short people’s memories are. Especially my employer’s. We were mandated by our largest customer, responsible for 75% of our revenue at the time, to make sure that all of our employees were vaccinated by a certain date. We lied and told them that we would comply, but we left it up to individuals to decide. Add to this the fact that all of these mandates, the illegal arrests and detainments, and the debanking came at the order of our federal government.
As a sales and operations manager, one of my jobs is to monitor bid websites and submit proposals to agencies letting contracts. One recently came across my radar from the federal government. I read the 99 page bid document, and aside from the terms being very heavily slanted in the government’s favor and giving them an unrealistic degree of control over our day to day manpower scheduling, the main reason I didn’t submit a bid is because it is for an agency who, in my opinion has proven over the last five years to be the number one enemy of the people. The only reason I got away with not bidding is because my boss was away on holidays. He never even read the terms of the bid, to see how shitty of a deal it would be for the winner. But he was furious that I hadn’t placed a bid. It has permanently damaged our relationship to the point where he said “You need to set aside your opinion of the government at work.” This coming from the man who nearly had his business shut down over federal measures during Covid.
If there is such a thing as “ethical investing”, should companies not also practice “ethical contracting”?
Why would I choose to serve the worst enemy of the Canadian people, five years after my wife and I nearly lost everything due to their mandates, and our unwillingness to accept them?

Sometimes I think I ruin what should and could be happy times by constantly thinking adversarially about countering certain threats that are coming our way. While I personally have endless endurance for this kind of thinking and existence, I’ve recently come to understand that many around me, when faced with the truth, get really worried and scared. And that they’d rather continue living with comfortable lies than uncomfortable truths. They find my now very occasional attempts at sharing information intended to help them prepare, exhausting.
The most recent example was a conversation I was having with my sister about managing assets in the face of the asset stripping that we appear to be set up for in the next five years. She straight up told me that she didn’t want to know such things. That they just make her worry. And that she’d rather ignore it and “just have a happy life”.
I have been very judgemental of “normies” since I “woke up” in about 2003. And especially so since I e been a Bitcoiner. But now I think I’ve come to understand that it’s not just disinterest or intellectual laziness that keeps people stumbling around in the dark. It’s the fear they feel confronting so many things in this world they believed to be true that simply are not. In fact, they are so afraid that they would sooner kill the messenger than face reality in many cases.

I don’t know if that even matters. But I’m open to reasons why it may. Regardless of the Creator’s label or name, I think each specie was brought into rudimentary form by intelligence, then was forged into their current state over thousands or millions of years of exposure to various environments. All while competing for resources with other creatures.

I think making it an either/or is flawed. I know that God created all of the creatures and humans I see around me. But I also know why things like natural camouflage in certain species exist. Or a million other traits that improve odds of passing on genes.

I guess I just don’t see the flaw in either. Intelligent design is undeniable. But creatures that possess emerging or creator-intended changes in traits, or traits brought about through mutations or environmental factors, enhance survivability and in turn the likelihood to create offspring with the same favourable traits. Both concepts describe separate parts of the timeline in a creature’s existence. It’s apples and oranges isn’t it?

That’s one thing I love about gardening is the ability to have experiments running all the time. The biggest lesson being to conduct experiments in a way that has limited effect on total yield. Control groups etc. I learned that the hard way last year nuking all 16 of my specimen tomatoes by not doing a limited test on 1-2 plants with a new brand of insecticidal soap. Still got some yield but I nearly killed them after weeks of growing them up from seed and doing everything right. I felt sick.

I went to a face to face bank teller today for the first time in a couple of years. Omg painful. I initially went to the ATM to pull out $250. “Unable to Dispense”. I was well within my daily withdrawal limit by 40x. So I go in and stand in line. Thought about the Andrew Dice Clay bit about standing in a bank line. IYKYK. By the time I got my money and was told they couldn’t give $10 notes because they forgot to order them, I ended up having to present both my client card and my driver’s licence (which they scanned to update my account), and waited 10 more minutes while she checked to no avail about why I couldn’t just do the withdrawal from the ATM. By the time I was done, I felt like using their bathroom and leaving a loaf in the sink.

Time to get after it again today. Another 12 hours to make a difference at home on spring chores before it’s back to the salt mines tomorrow. Half a dozen eggs, and a quart of two and a half year old pressure canned potatoes fried in beef tallow for hash browns 💪🏽for fuel.
It’s a shame burning these nice weather days on cosmetic and cleaning tasks rather than being at the range or out hunting for antler sheds, but if not me then who?
I often think about how much time I could spend doing fun things with the family if there weren’t these recovery and prep times between seasons, when most of the work is a direct result of the changing seasons. 30lb of mud on the garage slab from six months of thawing vehicles. Fixing/painting things outdoors that can only be done in plus temps. I really want to move to Texas lol.
When I first moved up north I was wondering why a lot of the properties looked so run down. I was a little judgmental about it actually, and attributed it to laziness. Now that I have been here for a decade and a half I realize that the reason for it is that after being cooped up for 6 months, people often need to say “fuck it” to the chores and just head for the hills or the lake with the family, with some of the only 48 weekend days of free time that exist if one works a J.O.B. Add to that the workaholic culture that exists up here in the oilfield, and a guy has to actively fight to avoid being sucked into weekend shifts, on salary for no extra compensation.
It’s funny, having lived in many places in Canada, how the work culture varies from place to place. In BC and on Vancouver Island it’s so laid back. It’s like Mexican time. Ontario, the perpetual rat race and keeping up with the Jones’. Or the ideal farm life I enjoyed as a kid if you’re rural.

After a long workday on the yard and house on 4½ hrs sleep, I had a little siesta from 4-5:30. I woke to a text from my Dad that he had suffered a heart attack earlier in the day while cutting the lawn. He’s 80. I called him and it just crushed me hearing the obvious labour to his breathing. Vitals are good, more tests and possible interventions to come, but I’m just sitting on the edge of my bed hoping his recent birthday isn’t the last time I get to see him a province away. He’s such a good man.

100% germination success on this tray of tomatoes at day 6. The two that haven’t popped above the surface I can see the stem bent over just at the surface. I soaked the peat moss pucks in a very dilute food solution at pH of 7, put a tiny bit of rooting compound in each hole, didn’t go too deep with the seed (3/16”) maintained the ambient temp on the shelf at 70°F, and had the benefit of just a little bit of bottom heat from the fluorescent ballast on the light on the lower shelf. Each day I manually checked the weight of each puck and added a couple squirts of solution to the outside mesh to keep each one just moist enough to not be waterlogged. #gardenstr #grownostr

It’s so weird having a financial education and trying to explain concepts to boomer parents whose wealth was partly earned through hard work, and partly “permitted” because they lived through their prime earning years in a less extractive part of the century, with a little help from compounding. My parents and in-laws haven’t even educated themselves on things like the limits on deposit insurance. They never had to even think about that stuff. Talking about risk and “safe investments” while not even knowing what they’re being charged in fees every year by their cheap suit RIA’s, their asses hanging out waiting to get smacked in bonds and black box funds they’ve done zero investigation into. Even after getting wrecked in 1987, 2000, and 2008. Totally oblivious to the reality that we are now being aggressively and alternately asset stripped on a 4-5 year rotation, by the government, pharma, Wall Street, warmongers and asset managers. The lack of inquisitiveness when it comes to sound money and hard assets is staggering.
I just need to work harder I guess. pfft.

I just parted out and freezer bagged two $15 freshly killed chickens we got from the local Hutterite colony today. We had all the same parts in the freezer packed and labeled from the grocery. The combined parts from the store were $27, were much smaller, and were most likely injected with water and sodium and were given antibiotics. Each chicken took only 5 minutes to part out and another 5 to freezer bag into portions. This is definitely the way to go. I can’t wait till we are slaughtering our own. #prepping #grownostr

I experimented with pregrowing squash last year and the survival rate on the transplants and the beating they took from the temperature and wind difference outside saw the others I planted from seed quickly outgrow them. I think this year I’ll go direct plant for those.

You have some decent space. I can’t wait to get out of the village onto a place where I can have a huge 20 yard x 50 yard garden like we had when I was a kid. I used to grow so many potatoes when I was a kid that I used to be able to take burlap feed bags of them to the country store and leave them out front and pick up cash from the store owner once a week. Left the farm life at 15 and been trying to get back ever since.
For the sketch I just used that Freeform app on iOS. It’s pretty handy. Did it in minutes.

Here’s the plan this year. I don’t have a lot of space and no good spot to do a large garden plot. I did one offsite at a friend’s farm but it wasn’t practical to care for it properly driving to a different site every night.
The small squares are stackable 2’x2’ frames that I can vary in height depending on how much soil depth they need for whatever I am growing in a given year. The large squares are 4‘ x 4‘ raised beds and the large rectangles are 2‘ x 6‘ raised beds. For the tomatoes I’m going to try 10 gallon nursery pots and for the peppers I’ve got a bunch of 3 gallon nursery pots that will just be shuffled around to maximize sun exposure. We have such a short growing season here that I’ve never managed to get my red bell peppers all the way to red with mature seeds that I can get to germinate the following year, and I’ve never been able to get wicked ghost peppers to produce fruit just lots of blooms. This year is going to be particularly short because I would normally be getting everything in the ground two weeks from now but the yard is still completely covered in snow, as are most of my beds.
I wish I had a couple of 1000 watt high-pressure sodium bulbs in a room in the basement so I could keep the party going and just grow stuff all year from cuttings rather than seed.
In the past I’ve had totally bagged rooms with up to 16 lights, CO2 generators, fully automated nutrient delivery and ventilation systems, the works. It would be cool to even just get one of those aero systems again with the six tubes that face each other like bleachers, with the light hanging in the middle. I’ve gotten pretty good yield off of those in the past. But those weren’t food crops 😉
