I found these things called big beef hybrids and they are pretty awesome. They grow about the size of a baseball and don’t have the ribs in them like a beefsteak. Two slices perfectly cover a piece of bread.

Today I decided not to work like a maniac and actually enjoy the space many weekends of weeding, raking and mowing have provided. Listening to metal in the back yard, having the occasional drink, smoked a fat, playing in the sprinkler with my dog to stay cool and listening to an audiobook in between check-ins on the Formula One weekend. The girls went hours away to the city to do some shopping and I’ve only had pants on for about half of the time they’ve been gone lol. Bare feet, balls out. Sorry neighbors.

Nothing is better than that first toasted tomato sandwich of the season with a little mayo and salt and pepper on rye or sourdough bread. Should be cruising into fall with lots of food in the ground available for canning. At our next place I seriously need to get some protein production happening, be it meat birds, rabbits, chickens, or quail. We could do some of that here, but I’m hesitant to build much that I am going to need to tear down and move later. It’s going to hurt enough leaving these awesome beds behind that have produced so well for three years. I could move them but removing and hauling the soil plus touching up the ground where they have sat for some time might be too time-consuming come moving time, given that I will be doing such a move while still working 50 to 60 hour weeks.
The place we are looking at this weekend has enough pasture and corral space for likely two or three beef cattle, as long as I can buy enough hay for winter. But for now, we make due on our little lot in the village. #gardenstr

At this stage of my life I would much prefer to be doing this search in a country other than Canada. But it’s just not in the cards. For now, we just do what we can, where we are, with what we’ve got. It’s looking highly unlikely that Alberta is going to break free of the east with the referendum this fall. I’m anticipating a further descent into socialism, exorbitant taxation and raging inflation over the next 10 years in Canada. The focus is going to be on building parallel systems for living so we can be outside of the matrix as much as possible.

As much as I enjoy the relatively violence free life we get to enjoy in the west, I often yearn to be tested. You don’t know until you face the fire how you will react to violence. And whether your reaction will be proportional to the threat. The thing I wonder most is whether my reaction will be in line, or completely over the top and land me in chains. I had a situation recently where a stranger, much larger and fitter than me, made a comment that I could have turned into a confrontation. But then I realized that there was no real threat, just a goof who was used to bullying people, flapping his gums. There was nothing to be gained by escalating it. The challenge when you are rarely tested is being able to make this judgement in a 10th of a second. My buddy who spent much of his time in youth facilities as a teenager said that there is a two second rule in there, if anyone even says something insulting to you or looks at you in a way you dislike. You have two seconds to hit him or be labelled a bitch. Out in the community it’s a little different. I find these topics super interesting. But I always hearken back to the words of my teacher about turning the other cheek, lest “IT” get released.

After three years of growing beautiful tomato seedlings from seed I’ve finally recognized that regardless of pot size, tomatoes in open ground or very deep beds open to the earth will always outperform those in pots. They need way more legroom and temperature moderation in the root zone then even a very large pot can provide. Plus I’m certain that the actual connection to the Earth is part of the equation. In year one, I got 80 pounds of tomatoes off seven plants that all reached almost 6 feet in height, in an open-bottomed 8’x4’ bed that currently holds my cucumber and squash trellises. This year the only tomato plant that is thriving is the one whose roots are free to go anywhere they like. The ones in pots, even very large 5 gallon containers, are visibly stressed the same as the ones in 3 gallon pots were last year. At first I thought it was a soil problem, but I’ve done everything right in that regard in these pots and they just don’t like it. when these black pots get irradiated by sun all day, the temperature in the root zone can easily reach 80°F and it’s amazing how quickly they become root bound. I will still get some yield off of these but their big brother in the bed is going to put them to shame.
It’s all part of the process of working out the kinks in a small setting so that when we move to a space with some serious production capability, I’ll have figured many of these things out. On Sunday we are going to look at a nearly 6 acre partially forested place with animal corrals, fencing around the perimeter and loads of growing space. Lord willing, we will be building our vision for self sufficiency there.

That’s clean work. Those risers are a great idea. I can’t tell you how many roof tie-ins I’ve seen where an attempt was made to fully integrate the porch roof into the main roofing materials, that ended up as a point of water incursion. These completely eliminate that flashing and waterproofing challenge and leave the envelope of the house intact. Do you just have to goop up the penetrations and washers with blackjack?

He also restored my stepmom’s 1968 GTO much like this one that was straight off the showroom floor with only about 16,000 original miles on it. When I was born he had a brand new orange Hemi Cuda that he sold when I was less than two years old. That car today would be priceless.

I need to learn how to build these. This one was built by a couple on Etsy from Sinaloa Mexico that makes a few different models for competitive slingers. I built one for a medieval weapons history project when I was in grade school, along with some other primitive weapons, and it was deadly. These braided ones are much more durable. And I’m a little stronger now haha. I did however learn a lesson about the importance of warming up and stretching beforehand. I pulled an intercostal muscle between my ribs and every breath was painful for about 24 hours lol. I’ll always be that kid running through the bush like the old days at heart.

Dad’s project that he picked up for $12k, stripped down, sandblasted and painted the frame, restored the body, 6x painted, 2x cleared and totally rebuilt the engine and tranny on about 10 years ago. 1965 Corvette Stingray. I only got a single ride in it before he ultimately sold it to his buddy down the street for about $70k. Still gets to see it weekly and his friend uses it a lot more than he did. #carstr

After getting lots of practice time in on the beach last week I’ve added this to my cargos along with a pouch of 5-6 three oz rocks for my hiking kit. It’s pretty handy being able to quickly load and sling a rock at 80-90 mph. Can’t wait to try taking a grouse or something with it. I was knocking full thickness bark off trees with some of my shots. Yes there’s a learning curve, but it’s a cool zen like thing to just focus on the target rather than the mechanics of the throw. Just looking intently at what you want to hit and letting it rip after a single rotation.
I can see an application for quickly messing up footing, face shields, riot shields, windshields and rifle optics if egg sized paintball projectiles filled with mineral oil and black paint could be produced in quantity. In the hands of 10-15 people behind the main line of a street conflict, it would be pretty effective. I saw a testimonial vid from a British officer involved in The Troubles in Northern Ireland in the 80’s and 90’s who said simple water balloons with this mixture seriously messed with riot responses.

I don’t know what it is about them, but ginger cats are consistently some of the best natured and affectionate cats we’ve ever had. The one in the front is 6 years old and pretty much imprinted on me as a kitten. Truly believes I am his Mom. He started life with us sleeping on a folded face cloth next to my mousepad while I worked. Or on my shoulder tucked into my neck, purring away. The other was a rescue only a week old, eleven years ago, found with his siblings next to his mother who had clearly been shot. He’s nearly human, has an actual vocabulary, and understands even the most subtle changes in the tone of our voices and our eye shape/facial expressions. It’s uncanny.
All of this, and I’m still way more partial to dogs. But these little social engineers are evolved beyond simple animals somehow. They have the best life. I understand why the Egyptians elevated them so.

Make it Make Sense
"Make it make sense", I said to myself, weeks into the Iran conflict. “Be careful what you ask for” is all I can say now lol.
The world model described below has answered many questions for me, and confirmed the models I’ve arrived at by observing the precisely timed and repeated “crises” we’ve faced since 2001, but at the same time has left me even more black pilled about the role of government in our lives in the west.
Recent geopolitical analyses by Simon Dixon are the closest I’ve found to making the high frequency narrative flip on the part of the American regime and news media regarding the Iran war make any sense, in my opinion. And it’s all about following capital flows, not news headlines.
As Simon points out in many of his podcasts and interviews, this is not a war of nation vs nation. It is purely a war of rebalancing of world polarity and asset-stripping capability sharing between the three powers: the Financial Industrial Complex, China (as the dominant power) in cooperation with the Military Industrial Complex, and the Technological Industrial Complex, all of whom's goal is to asset strip the West and humanity in general, usher in an inescapable physical and financial surveillance state, and continue to create theatrical conflicts with real deaths and destruction to keep the military industrial complex fed.
Looking at this as a war of nation vs nation for the first handful of weeks is the reason why my brain couldn't make sense of the constantly conflicting headlines. All of our governments are now puppets to corporations, the largest asset managers and sovereign wealth funds. It's why a vote for a leader in any western, supposedly democratic country hasn't mattered for over 50 years. It's the reason why despite who is in office, the same agendas we are resisting continue marching on. It's why none of the actions of the countries involved in this conflict have made sense for more than 24 hours at a time. The countries are all in bed together at the behest of the real power, the corporations and lobbies.
It behooves all of us to give some serious thought to how to live outside of the current financial system so we can still live and conduct trade when the INDIVIDUAL sanctions start coming down on those who won't accept things like digital ID and biomedical ID's and social credit score based transaction ability.
Build local community and communications capabilities. Acquire assets that can be transacted without third parties. And to as great a degree as possible, diversify your income streams to span things that can earn you value "in the system", as well as things that can't be taken away. It is easier said than done, particularly for those of us who are/were already somewhat trapped before coming to this stark realization. But it is the only possible escape for you and your offspring.
