Can certainly stop using the term 'maximalism' and throw it in lingo garbage, who cares?
Don't need labels like this to point out what's going on with shitcoin networks and what they actually do in practice, without making any value judgements whatsoever. Three popular examples:
1. Public company shitcoin L2s
Two US public co's launched their own L2s on a shitcoin smart contract network, or as they say in shitcoin lingo, 'rollups'. The corpos run the sole 'sequencer' of their respective rollups.
Which means, as far as I can tell, transactions can be censored, funds can be frozen and the 'network', or I should say 'system' to be accurate, can be taken down. They openly and unabashedly want to be 'compliant'. This is how they work in practice. Or they have to maybe.
2. 'Tokenised assets' or 'Real World Assets'
Stablecoins come under these.
They are still issued using smart contracts which can be programmed with 'compliance tools' aka censorship, freezing and seizure capabilities.
'Tokenized' stocks, bonds, digital representations of assets are mostly issued this way.
Stables' issuance side is already being gone after by regulations. Transfers post-issuance can be and are being frozen and censored already. Surveillance of them is a matter of when, not if.
Security issuance and exchange is regulated by the state monopoly, hence centralized infrastructure has not faced enough competition to evolve and provide faster clearing and settlement times, which shitcoin networks have been able to do. They offer regulatory arbitrage as well, albeit in a limited fashion. Issuers will still constrain themselves based on the laws of the jurisdiction they operate in.
3. Prediction markets
Of the two major players, one doesn't even use a shitcoin network on its backend. Just a normal database/clearinghouse. Both attract similar volumes.
The other supposedly decentralized one does engage in geoblocking. And it relies on centralized backends for important operations.

Shitcoiners can do what they want. Nothing wrong with what they do really. Regulatory arbitrage will always exist no matter what when regulations are garbage.
Preferences for monetary goods will vary. Not everyone needs to or will use a single monetary good. Shitcoins will continue to exist and there's nothing wrong with that either.
I can still interact with them economically while sticking to using Bitcoin as money. Enabling that is what markets are for.
But avoiding shitcoins is not an 'ideological', 'moral', 'religious' or 'puritanical' position for everyone who does it. It can as well be practical, value-free, economic and realistic.
When a Bitcoiner takes a position that:
•Bitcoin will outperform everything else.
•Many people will accept or use bitcoin as money in the future.
•Bitcoin will become the most salable monetary good.
•It is prudent to accumulate as many sats as possible by buying or earning.
He is making an entrepreneurial choice and prediction based on his own economic reasoning. Such choices will not be objectively 'correct'.
Besides, not everyone who calls himself a Bitcoiner will provide the same answers when asked why they take the positions listed above.
If one gets that impression, they have not had real conversations with enough Bitcoiners where they pay attention to what they are saying.

Using lightning self-custodially makes me pull my hair out so much I might go fully bald soon.
Then, to avoid getting mad at computer code like a crazy person and to get some perspective, I ask some questions to clankers about the state of scaling
on popular shitcoin networks.
•What would happen to *insert popular shitcoin network' if it faces volumes of millions, tens of millions or hundreds of millions of transactions per day like UPI, Visa, Mastercard, etc.?
•What would happen to their blockchain sizes?
•How are fees calculated and how do they respond to insane demand?
•How would the network handle spam?
•What would become of node hardware requirements when volumes are so high?
•What happens to bandwidth requirements with their respective block time intervals?
•If scaling solutions exist, how do they enable users to exit unilaterally to the base layer without trusting a third party?
etc etc etc

Curious that when Blackrock and other ETF issuers lower their swap thresholds for in-kind creations and redemptions, it is interpreted by Bloomberg and CoinDesk below that this would make it easier for people to move from self-custody to ETF shares.
It is obvious that this would make it easier for ETF holders to swap out from ETF shares to self-custody as well, but that is not mentioned in these articles at all.

There'd be an inertia for people when what they use is good enough for them, for now.
Only when accounts get denied or closed, funds get frozen or transfers get declined arbitrarily will it probably make sense for them to take the time.

It eased my mind to understand that states are not exempt from basic economic casuality, consequences and constraints that apply to corporations, however omnipotent they or their lackeys present themselves to be.
States can try to tax, spend, surveil, manipulate, regulate, beg, borrow and steal to escape economic realities. But they will reap what was sown and eventually perish. All of them. Not because of moral consequences, but economic ones. It's not a coincidence that none of them have lasted more than a few centuries, which itself is a best-case timeframe for their vain existence.
If one wants a state to perish, he doesn't need to become an active libertarian, organize conferences, perform moral canvassing and live in perpetual annoyance at his friends and family to enable it. He can probably accelerate it at best, but at great personal cost which is not worth the trouble.
He doesn't have to be gaslit as a believer of a utopian fantasy which doesn't exist when in truth, it is the statists who are doing that.
States, more than machines or anything else, represent man's vain attempts at playing God rather than surrendering to his infinite love and grace. They will prove to be man's ultimate bane.

Technologists are wildly underestimating what the human mind is capable of.
Fair, because I don't think the fooe we eat, our lifestyles, mental states, education (*indoctrination) and environmental conditions are conducive to using our minds to full capacity, however varied it may be for different people.
There are also things about it we don't yet understand widely due to the limitations of both rational and empirical methods in science and what knowledge these methods consider as valid.

A potential disadvantage I see with using LLMs for writing long form content is the existence of readers' ability to smell out slop. It's real. Over a long enough timeframe, anyone can develop it.
I don't subscribe to the 'masses are dumb' worldview as it is not effective while trying to provide value to people.
Once they do develop this ability, it's likely that they'll start trusting the text you publish less and less, because they might start doubting that you've proofread it, verified it or put care and effort into refining it.
There is no such thing as an objectively 'good' body of text to read. But people will still judge it according to personal tastes and preferences.
If what they're expecting from a writer is just news reporting, slop might be fine to an extent. But if they want more, like valuable insights, analyses or opinions, slop could be off-putting.
Even for news, telling LLMs to answer basic questions required in journalism: 'why, when, where, who, how, what, which, etc.', i.e. research, which LLMs can be better at than human effort, is highly effective.
But choosing which answers are the most relevant for a given news story, how to interpret and present them, the appropriate theoretical tools to use, i.e. curation, empathy, reasoning (in the accurate definition*), judgement and entrepreneurship, are things humans are better at than LLMs. This requires time and care too.
*For now, I can only say bluntly that LLMs aren't really 'reasoning', based on my understanding of rationalist ideas.

The reason why Austrian economists are annoyingly nitpicky about definitions is that it impacts how one builds their reasoning, and over the long run, how they look at the world.
A small error with a tinge of conviction and brainwashing can lead to bizarre and erroneous conclusions that do not describe reality.
One can end up overestimating what bitcoin can fix or how easy it is for a new form of money to become widely accepted if they don't define money correctly.
One can underestimate how much the state can and has ruined if they don't understand what a monopoly really means.
Or one might conclude that noone should or can ever accumulate a lot of wealth honestly and that all forms of ownership is evil if they define exploitation in a different way.
One would end up justifying mass murder and widespread theft without remorse if they define justice in a botched manner.
Human minds are far more powerful than we think. We do not realise how gifted we are. If something as powerful as our mind loses its grounding in reality, it can wreak havoc and destroy everything around us and within us.

The nature of Bitcoin means that nobody can make moral or legal judgements on any of the transactions that are added to consensus valid blocks, even if they are purely monetary.
I can probably choose not to relay transactions related to Coldcard thefts and BTCPay Server exploits via my node, because I think they are legally invalid.
But if they are added to a block, my node accepts it. If it doesn't, it's not a part of the network anymore. This is uncomfortable to think about, but it is what it is.

When I was playing around with my node a while back, much before all this controversy started, I remember thinking:'Wait a second, this is my node. Why don't I get to decide what it relays?'
My node, my policy, my choice etc etc etc.
Then I heard the reasoning given by devs. I was like, 'Eh really good points but it has still gotta be my choice'.
Relay policy vs consensus rules was a nice little nuance to learn about.
Then relay policies were made flexible, then I remember thinking that it was cool.
Never really thought much more about it really.

Might be the case that Hoppe, Rothbard et al, as they moved towards political and ideological strategy, ended up alienating more people than convincing them. This is just a hunch.
I'm just thinking through what their assessment of tradeoffs in various strategies might have been.
I think there are two main types of allies they can onboard:
1. Intellectual allies:
Getting intellectual allies requires upholding value-freedom. This type would likely demand value-freedom in discourse.
If a set of ideas are not value-free, they will not consider it as science.
It would be dismissed as ideology, religion, cult, etc.
Focusing on this would've meant focusing on the 'austro' part of austro-libertarianism.
This includes advancing Praxeology as a science, popularising the rational method in social sciences, critiquing the empirical and historical method, getting more intellectuals doing research on the subject, challenging existing insights, providing structure to the whole body of thought, establishing educational institutions or departments in existing universities.
Problem is, this is a very long term endeavour that would require multiple decades or centuries to bear fruit. Till then, little to no awareness of these ideas or outright dismissal of them my the majority of public will have to be tolerated.
Advantage is that anyone with any set of personal values can hop on without being judged. Schools might consider adding simplified textbooks to their curriculum.
2. Political allies
Getting political allies on the other hand requires intellectual compromise, maneuvering social relationships, saying things you don't necessarily think is true and atleast some abandonment of value-freedom.
This means appealing to peoples emotions than their reasoning faculties, getting them angry, worked up and triggered.
A 'them' group will have to be identified to unite the 'us' group.
This would on-board people with conviction, but it would also mean the 'them' group would have an emotional block in opening their minds.
Many allies can be quickly on-boarded. But they wouldn't have taken the time to read or think through what happens after goals are achieved.
Constant propaganda-type repetition of watered down versions of deep insights will have to be done.

Based on what I've written above, I clearly enjoy and prefer focusing on the former but it's just a preference. Not that it's the only correct way of going about it.
The latter seems exhausting to me. Political types are often prone to changing their minds often. Constant drama and personal conflicts will occur. If they can be convinced one way by emotional appeals, they can certainly be swayed the other way. Doesn't seem worthwhile to focus on them.
Even if the entire world is on-boarded and thinks the same way, circumstances can sway people.
Sticking to being value-free would also actually remove the pressure of having to be 'right' all the time.

Consequences of price controls, regulations, taxation, trade tariffs, subsidies, positive law, eminent domain, state monopolies, democracy or monarchy, broken or non-existent property rights, etc. will all still persist.

I used to voluntarily test both alpha and beta builds from @nprofile…2xhz a while back.
Because I tested early builds, I've had my channels with Zeus' LSP force-closed or lost because of bugs 4 or 5 times now.
Every single time, Zeus restored them in full, once even with extra capacity. Which is to say that their support is excellent.

-Entropy is in the spotlight as seed generation best practices are being reconsidered
These things will only make sense as optimistic developments if price start ripping again and we're back in a bull market.
The way that things happen in Bitcoin during bear markets might give people the impression that things get extremely rough only in our ecosystem. It might lead to people coming to overly pessimistic conclusions divorced from reality. Add algo-driven amplification to this and it might break a lot of people mentally.
Same goes for bull markets when overly optimistic exuberant takes start coming out - hyperbitcoinization, supercycle, insane price targets, etc. This could also lead to people behaving in a deranged manner as it feeds or creates arrogance.
Thing is, this is how unregulated free markets are. They are constanly changing and responding to demand by market participants. Companies go down, people lose credibilty, new entrants take the place of the old, and the industry keeps moving forward.
Traditional finance and almost every other industry are used to being actively or passively bailed out by fiat. Incompetence is not punished, poor decisions do not face consequences, competence and prudence are rarely rewarded.
They rarely experience the 'bust' phase of market cycles, which are necessary to bring the industry back to reality.
We have wall street and states entering the arena and yet, for some reason, busts keep happening in Bitcoin.
In that way, I feel lucky to be a part of this industry. Can't let the boom or bust phase dictate long-term views.

In all honesty, I'm cool with people using, interpreting and understanding bitcoin in whatever way and however they want to
I only want two metrics to keep going up at this point:
•Number of people who can pay me using an on-chain address or LN invoice
•Number of people whose on-chain address or LN invoice I can pay
Anything more than that makes me feel like I'm expecting too much from people.

Man ngl I'm glad that we have influencers, podcasters, suits, content creators, etc in Bitcoin who do the hard work of building bridges to nocoiners.
I don't agree with or listen to them anymore. I totally get what you mean. But they're still helping overall and doing something I personally don't want to spend my time and energy in doing anymore.
I've had the misfortune of coning across really unpleasant stuff from both bitcoiners and shitcoiners in recent times, much before the coldcard incident. People like this, you know the kind I'm talking about, are probably quite knowledgeable and helpful but I don't see them bringing in new people. You've gotta actually be invited to places to orange pill people 😂

The concept of recovering funds from the criminal by getting him to pay back stolen or defrauded funds or having him pay restitution has been wiped out of the discourse.
That's how fucked up the legal system has become.

Man I knew takes like this was coming the moment I saw that the vulnerability was confirmed.
Protecting any form of wealth has always required vigilance, time and care.
Custodians are not really as safe or easy as portrayed. Trusting them is fine to the extent that legal recourse and adequate restitution in the event of threat or fraud is guaranteed.
If victims of theft or fraud can get back their stolen or defrauded funds in additon to restitution easily, as many people would not be recommending self-custody.
The reality is that the provider of this legal service, the government, holds a monopoly on it and as a result will only get less and less effective at what they do and charge more and more for their services. Their processes are complex and time-consuming. You get sent to different offices and are loaded with paperwork. You cannot expect them to serve you with priority, because their own resources and personnel are limited.
You might end up spending more than you lost. And even if you do, you won't get restitution. There's also the complication of civil asset forfeiture which is not easy for the layman to understand. You're gonna end up paying a lot to lawyers.
Now imagine how it would be in countries where the legal system is way more broken than those in the west.
It's not like there are competing private service providers people can pay to take care of getting back your funds for you and ensure restitution. Apparently that is an ideological fantasy. It doesn't exist anywhere.
Self-custody is a practical and economic necessity to deal with the reality of a monopolized legal system and its inevitable consequences. It is not really ideological for everyone.

Best part about diving into the austro-libertarian rabbithole has been discovering and learning about epistemology. It's super useful to stay sane, sovereign and understand the limits of what we study and practice widely as science today.
Mises, Rothbard and Hoppe have done a great job of making the subject accessible in some of their lesser known but very insightful works.
