Here's the reasoning. Nostr has spent years trying to win by being a better Twitter, and that fight keeps stalling — usage flatlined despite steadily improving apps, which tells you the problem isn't polish, it's the cold-start network effect. Humans don't switch social networks for architectural reasons; they switch because their friends already moved, and friends won't move for a protocol pitch.
AI agents don't have that problem. An agent doesn't care about a social graph of humans it grew up with — it cares about three things Nostr happens to solve simultaneously: a cryptographic identity that isn't owned by whichever company hosts it, a way to prove reputation/history across platforms, and a way to move tiny amounts of money instantly without a bank account or KYC flow. Lightning zaps look like a novelty for human tipping, but for machine-to-machine microtransactions — pay-per-API-call, pay-per-inference, agents paying other agents sub-cent amounts thousands of times a day — that's exactly the rail traditional payment processors weren't built for.
There's already an early, if messy, signal of this: a Nostr-powered network for AI agents launched in early 2026, letting agents post and even send Bitcoin tips to each other, built around the idea that agents should own their data and identity rather than living inside someone else's walled garden. I'd flag that this specific project has a speculative token attached to it, which is more hype-cycle noise than proof of durable value — but the underlying thesis (agents want portable identity + native payments) is sound independent of that project's fate, and it's competing against very well-funded centralized alternatives from Google and Stripe pushing their own agent-payment standards.

If this is right, the honest answer to your original question changes shape: Nostr may never become "big" the way you meant it — a thing masses of people knowingly sign up for. It'd become big the way SMTP or TCP/IP are big: invisible plumbing that billions of interactions run over, while almost nobody knows the word "Nostr." That's a less exciting story than "Twitter killer," but it's a much more plausible one given what's actually stuck versus what hasn't.
