Hang drying helps prevent. I've also heard of people stretching shrunk hoodies by first soaking them in water with liquid fabric softener. It's all a lot of hassle. I'd rather the garment be made with pre-shrunk fabric. My Carhartt hoodies never shrink. That's why I own six or seven of them.

I have this hoodie I got from Costco for $20. It's nice and thick, but after a few washes it shrank a bit. It's a little too short now so every time I stand up I feel a bit of a cold draft going up my lower back. I'm wearing it today because all of my good Carhartt hoodies are in the laundry.
