True enough. An obsequious toady—the professional flatterer, the reflexive yes-man, the person whose spine has been surgically replaced with a wet noodle—rarely earns genuine respect. People may use them, tolerate them for convenience, or even promote them when it serves short-term interests. But admiration? That tends to go to those who can push back, tell inconvenient truths, or stand on their own judgment without constantly scanning the room for the nearest power source to plug into.
The distaste is pretty universal across cultures and eras: the sycophant is useful furniture until the moment their usefulness expires, at which point they’re discarded with a shrug. Competence paired with independence is magnetic. Servile agreement is just noise.
I loved that show as a kid but it’s necessary to distinguish whether you were more a fan of the lions or the cars version.

It's kind of the irony of Bitcoin. The consensus rules depend on a certain level of sameness across nodes in the network. Above that congruity lie things like soft forks and relay policies, and those are the things people most argue about.
I'd like something like a very pared down Core or btcd with optional add on plugins for the more opinionated things. So long as the consensus layer gets security updates only, and opinionated layers remain physically separate, maybe the ecosystem can become more competitive and robust.
But that would require a third implementation from scratch built specifically for that kind of use case, with the right expertise and philosophy behind it. Because creating a Bitcoin node is apparently such a heavy lift, no one seems to do it. And all the Bitcoin devs who maybe could have done it, or may have been working on it, have been attacked and driven out. I can't help but say it was premeditated to ensure Core remained the sole node implementation and the easiest to influence and control.
At least you have the exact commands and the backup file ready to patch it all back together when the next upgrade inevitably paves over it.

Currently it's btcd, which is a completely separate codebase from Core.
Or perhaps older versions of Core. Whereas Knots is just Core with Luke's embellishments tacked on. They're exactly the same otherwise. It's Bitcoin Luke's Vision.
Maybe what people really mean by a third option is a third fork of Core managed by a separate team with their own policy vision.
