The war machine is pretty interesting, starting off as a political stance. Organizations start off as "doing their own thing" away, but not against hierarchical structures (like the State, they actually say"the war machine is exterior to the state"). Militias, art movements... open source...
but what happens is that the State ends up appropriating these war machines. Not by conquering, but through directing them through what they're best at and their ideals.
What does the movement want? Stability, power, money, influence, peace, etc. Well the state has the capacity to help, but only through negotiating on its own terms.
So Holland discusses how there are six phases of what a war machine is. But this paragraph is what I find wild. "Capitalism" as a war machine starts off being "exterior to the state" like industries creating their own innovations to earn capital, but eventually becomes appropriated by the state. But that in this last phase, capitalism itself ends up appropriating the state - because the state needs capital to enact its own desires, so everything the state does for its own needs is actually in service of this larger force called capitalism, even to the state's eroding.
