(Известняк может образоваться в результате химического осаждения; не весь древний известняк образовался в результате отложений морских обитателей.) Ни в одном из этих древних скальных образований не будет обнаружено признаков жизни; они не содержат окаменелостей, если только по какой-то случайности более поздние отложения водного периода не смешались с этими более древними дожизненными слоями.
Ранняя земная кора была крайне нестабильной, но горы еще не находились в процессе формирования. Планета сжалась под действием гравитации во время формирования. Горы не являются результатом коллапса остывающей коры сжимающейся сферы; они появляются позднее в результате действия дождя, силы тяжести и эрозии.
Континентальная часть суши в эту эпоху увеличивалась, пока не покрыла почти десять процентов земной поверхности. Сильные землетрясения не начинались до тех пор, пока континентальная масса земли не поднялась значительно над водой. Когда они однажды начались, их частота и тяжесть возрастали с течением времени. За миллионы и миллионы лет количество землетрясений уменьшилось, но на Урантии по-прежнему происходит в среднем пятнадцать землетрясений в день.
850 000 000 лет назад началась первая настоящая эпоха стабилизации земной коры. Большинство более тяжелых металлов расположились ближе к центру земного шара; остывающая кора перестала обрушиваться в таких обширных масштабах, как в прежние века. Установлен лучший баланс между выдавливанием суши и более тяжелым дном океана. Поток подкорового слоя лавы распространился почти по всему миру, и это компенсировало и стабилизировало колебания, вызванные охлаждением, сжатием и поверхностным смещением.
Частота и сила извержений вулканов и землетрясений продолжала снижаться. Атмосфера очищалась от вулканических газов и водяного пара, но процент углекислого газа все еще был высоким.
