In case anyone is wondering what my avatar is, its the smallest most interesting SVG shape I could hand code back when astral.ninja was the main nostr client.
When I joined nostr it was out of curiosity, so naturally I wanted to test what would break if I set my profile image to a data URI. but at the time astral.ninja limited the "picture" field to maximum length of 256 which meant that if I was going to build a data URI that would fit I would only be able to do SVG and probably only have a single <path> element.
This is the SVG I ended up writing:

The main path "M0 0h10v10H0z" takes advantage of the fact that the fill area on paths inverts when it crosses itself. which allowed me to make the white space in the middle.
So in total this SVG encoded to a data URI has a length of 206, just enough to fit into the "picture" field in astral.ninja, although as you would imagine It didn't work so I went back to a PNG profile picture :D

1958年11月15日傍晚，广东宝安县沙头角中英街上，两个年轻人吃完晚饭，擦了擦嘴，起身朝界桩走去。他们的脚步从容不迫，一点也没有慌乱，像是在执行什么公务。英国警察远远看了一眼，没有拦他们。直到两人开口说“请求保护”，警察才明白过来——这是大陆跑过来的逃港者。没过多久，一辆吉普车就把他们接走了。
这两个人，一个叫丁承华，24岁，原滁县公安局政保股干事；另一个叫丁崇鼎，是丁承华的亲哥哥，原蚌埠三中教师。兄弟俩都是右派——丁崇鼎的帽子更重，不光是极右分子，还是前国民党少校军需官，已经被关在蚂蚁山劳改队服刑了。
为了救出哥哥、也为了自己跑路，丁承华早就开始准备了。
1957年，滁县公安局内部抓小集团，因为哥哥的关系，丁承华名列其中。跟他一起倒霉的还有治安股干事颜锦培、县局政保股副股长陈学平、秘书股副股长朱成华。因为哥哥的关系，丁承华心里清楚自己迟早会被牵连。他提前从局里偷了三张盖了公章的空白介绍信——这东西在当时可是命根子，有了它，就相当于有了合法身份，有了随意穿越行政层级的通行证。
他还从《安徽公安》杂志上抄下了关于香港澳门边境情况的文章，把路线、口岸、检查要点都牢牢记在心里。小集团被揪出来后，成员被分散到各地劳动改造，但彼此之间的联系并没有断。尤其是丁承华和朱成华——朱成华只有一条腿，行动不便，但他俩通信频繁，朱成华在信里一直鼓励他抓紧跑。
1958年10月2日，朱成华又写了一封信，直接坦言丁承华应该立即行动，逃往香港。随后两人反复推敲逃跑计划：怎么伪装、走哪条路、怎样利用手里的介绍信。朱成华说自己腿脚不便走不了，让丁承华尽快走。
丁承华手里攥着三张盖了公章的空白介绍信，自己又是公安出身，背后还有公安系统的人出主意，所以胆子比一般逃港者大得多，心思也细得多。
10月间，丁承华假装得了盲肠炎，请了一个月的病假，经批准后于11月7日提前领到了30元生活费。拿到钱的第二天11月8日，他带着事先填好的县公安局公函，来到当地驻军零二零零部队政治部保卫科，借口说正在侦察一个潜伏特务案子，需要化装成青年军官。部队保卫科信了，借给他一套上尉军服和一个军官证。这下子，他摇身一变成了查案的解放军上尉。三张空白介绍信，用掉了第一张。
11月11日，丁承华拿着第二张介绍信——上面填了他军官证上的名字和零一四四部队的番号——来到蚌埠市公安局，要求提审正在服刑的丁崇鼎。公安局负责人批示同意，给他开了真介绍信。他随即拿着信去了蚂蚁山劳改队，把自己的亲哥哥从劳改队里提了出来。
兄弟俩没有停留，当天就坐车到了上海。到了上海，丁承华拿出第三张空白介绍信，上面填了和哥哥分别的化名李维良、陈顺平，来到上海市委组织部，说要找动力学校的张善余了解一个叫鲁德衡的案子。这种小事情非常常见，市委组织部给他开了介绍信。他去了动力学校，很快又折返回来——说张善余已经调到广东宝安县某小学当教员了。市委组织部没有起疑心，又给他们开了介绍信，让他们去宝安县委。
其实，丁承华利用职务之便，早就查到了张善余已经调到了离香港最近的宝安县沙头角。来上海，就是为了赚取上海组织部的介绍信。他以前在上海出过公差，知道这里每天开出大量介绍信，根本没人核查。至此，丁承华的三张假介绍信全部用完了，手里换成了盖着上海组织部大红章的真介绍信——这回，他们再也不怕任何人核查了。
三天后11月15日上午，两人从上海辗转到达宝安县委组织部，拿着上海的介绍信说要去沙头角找小学教员张善余了解情况。看到大单位的介绍信，县委组织部不敢怠慢，立即给开了介绍信，又介绍他们到县公安局办理了边防证。当天下午，两人就拿到了可以合法进入边境地区的通行文件。
到了沙头角，他们还真去那所小学走了一趟，像模像样地找到张善余聊了一会儿。然后两人不慌不忙地在街边小饭馆吃了顿晚饭，饭后慢悠悠地走到边界线，轻轻巧巧就跨了过去。边防哨兵看了一眼，根本没当回事。
直到他俩跑到英国警察面前，用背熟的英语说“需要保护”时，英国警察才叫来一辆吉普车，把兄弟俩接走了。边防这边的人才目瞪口呆——出大事了。
整个逃亡过程，从11月8日去零二零零部队骗军服，到11月15日在沙头角越界，一共八天。他们一路穿越了公安系统、部队系统、组织系统和边防系统，畅通无阻，绿灯到底。
那是一个认介绍信的时代。他们熟悉这个规则，也利用了这个规则。
一个月后，1958年12月20日，他们逃港的消息作为重大恶性案件刊登在北京的内部文件上。至于这两兄弟后来的下落，再也没有人提起过。

GM guys. Let's take a moment to appreciate how inherently challenging it is to build decentralized systems. Just think if all we had to do was trust a big central database. It would be insanely convenient, and we'd have a lot more bandwidth to focus on the things that matter like UX. Solving decentralized systems is an entire class of problems which logarithmically increases UX challenges.
Building here is not for the faint of heart. Normies couldn't fathom it. That makes us a special breed. Keep pushing.
