投机者长期遭到社会公义派的抨击，早已不是新闻。然而，在应对经济动荡时，投机者扮演着至关重要、极具价值的角色。
在大多数缺乏经济学常识的人眼中，投机者不烤面包、不供药品、不下车间、不教数学、不拉琴。因此，他们被视作寄生虫，依附于提供日常必需品与服务的劳动者。
下面引用一位本应更懂经济者的原话：“这些高频交易者……赚得盆满钵满，动辄数十亿美元，却没为经济创造任何社会价值。”城市研究所与布鲁金斯学会联合成立的税收政策中心联席主任伦·伯曼如是说，“他们不过是现代版的‘收银台揩油者’。”
路透社市场分析师约翰·坎普也表示：“大宗商品生产商和消费者长期指责投机者扭曲价格——价格本该由实物供需决定。”
投机者长期遭到社会公义派的抨击，早已不是新闻。要是伯尼·桑德斯还没公开谴责这类市场行为，那这事铁定在他的待办清单里。
事实上，唯一能对冲经济波动风险的，正是投机者。想想《圣经》里“七年丰年、七年荒年”的故事：丰年时，粮食充足、价格低廉。投机的秘诀很简单：低买高卖。丰年里，投机者买入粮食、囤积谷仓。此举抬高了低价、减少了过剩供给——看似推高了价格、消耗了库存，实则平抑了价格与供给的波动。
到了荒年，粮食歉收、供给紧缺、价格飞涨，民众陷入饥荒。此时，投机者“趁人之危”，抛售囤积的粮食。供给增加，高价回落、供给补足——再一次平抑价格与供给波动。价格比无投机时更低、供给比无投机时更多，恰恰在最需要的时候雪中送炭。（尽管无知者痛斥投机者“发灾难财、剥削穷人”，但事实是：投机者在饥荒时提供了救命口粮。）
由此可见，若想远离经济动荡，自由市场中的投机者，是守护我们的天使。
或许有人会问：若投机者判断失误、高买低卖，岂不是加剧市场波动？丰年抛售、荒年囤积，推高高价、压低低价，加剧供需失衡？没错，失败的投机者，行为与成功的投机者完全相反。但每一次错误决策，都会让他亏损、财富缩水。频繁犯错，终将破产，再也无力扰乱市场。
自由市场的机制很公平：奖励成功平抑波动的投机者，惩罚加剧动荡的投机者。 正因如此，投机制度始终能为经济稳定保驾护航。
然而，政府参与投机，情况则截然不同：它可肆无忌惮地扰乱市场，无需承担任何后果。所有亏损，最终都由纳税人买单，从无辜民众身上搜刮而来。
