Western society holds the standard of always adopting new technology as presented by default. Both those groups flipped that script. They felt that a standard should be set for human wellbeing and technology should only be adopted if it improves the quality of life of humans who use it. In some cases adopt the technology but with rules around its use.
I don't believe in top down assigned rules like the Amish. I don't believe it is for someone else to tell me what standard of human flourishing I use to guide my decisions. I do believe in making deliberate decisions about technology use, even if they are difficult, instead of blindly adopting whatever is new.

Embedded AI or edge AI is what I usually see it called. I pulled an example out of my butt. The point is if the scope of the problem is small the compute can be small.
It may be a dumb idea but then again have you priced competent mechanic time lately? Have you been able to find a competent mechanic lately? If I can replace years of experience with an arduino and a 10 minute drive that's a solid economic case.

If you haven't improved your life in any way using AI by now I think that says more about you than AI.
One mental model I use is power tools. A roto tiller can go faster than a broadfork. It is also more dangerous to you and easier to accidentally break things. The problem with AI is the dangerous bit is less obvious than the dangerous bit on your typical power tool. Even power tools keep emergency rooms in business, so the less obvious risky bits of AI are going to trap people who aren't paying careful attention.
I'm trying to start to use Rust for some of my coding projects. I could just start dropping prompts asking it to spit out code. Instead I set up a system prompt containing my relevant background and told it to be a teacher including asking me questions to make sure I understand. Then I started reading the rust book and using that AI as a personal tutor as I went making sure I understood and could apply what I read. Slower today but I'll go farther and write less unmaintainable slop in the long run.
Is an AI teacher perfect? No. Is a human teacher perfect? Also no. Both are better than going it completely alone or only with search.

Fish tank filter was a bust. The seals were dry rotted and the manufacturer no longer makes them. I could seal it but nothing that won't be a giant pain in the ass with the maintenance frequency. You get what you pay for it seems.
Tweaked the pools chemicals after I gave up on that.
I think that's enough work for the day. Time for sauna then float around in the pool a bit.

I have one of those fancy electric composters and it needed the filter rebuilt. They are a plastic shell carbon pellet filter. Buy for $100 a piece or replace the carbon with $5 of carbon pellets, that's $95 in the bank.
That's one chore done.
Next up, my fish tank has a little side of the tank filter. I acquired one of the larger nicer under tank filters. Time to set up the under tank filter and switch over.
Maybe I'll just make nostr my chore log.

Watched last nights spacex launch at someone else's house. They selected some feed with a rando in between us and the real feed. It was so distracting. I just couldn't stop thinking about how pathetic it is to make a career out of reacting to other people actually doing stuff.
This wasn't a reporter though I'm sure that's how he thinks of himself. A reporter would have research on hand to add context at appropriate times. This guy never added any valuable information but he did say dumb shit over the real commentators so I missed interesting technical information.
Anyhow, just a rant about bumping into the version of the internet fed to normies who don't take self police their information intake.

Like I said before. If the data center builders gave a shit about the local community or environment they would all use closed loop cooling. Most new ones don't.
That is one simple to understand case of unnecessary externalities to make construction cheaper. It is not the only one.

2, AI data center loads are extremely variable loads not fixed loads. They have very large and very fast swings in power consumption which are difficult to manage as a generator.
3, data centers make very few jobs compared to any other use of the space. How are they paying the community when there are no meaningful local salaries?
As someone who has first hand experience working in data centers, you really sound like your knowledge is entirely based on a few astroturf articles.

A personal favorite example is that Borat's brother, a neurotypical, has been the worlds leading "expert" on autism for decades. Despite the naysayers, the most obvious explanation is that the VC insiders think there is more money to be had holding and turning them profitable than hype and dumb to exit now. Xteink x4 is a great little dumb e-reader once you load crosspoint on it. Side loaded no DRM epubs only. I didn't enable network and it doesn't do any ads or recommendations if I did.

I'm scatterbrained by nature. I'm really prone to piling up lots of projects in mixed states of partially done.
Slowing down and really focusing on the current task, proper execution with all the details completed really improves my mental state. Also the more I improve my mental state the easier it is to slow down and focus on one task at a time. It is a virtuous cycle. It's kind of amazing how much much gets done by slowing down.

I'm not opposed to 1 and 2. The amount of time I often spend on here exceeds what I think is optimal for those functions.
Think about it this way. Book clubs meet once a month typically. Any more often and some of the members won't have had enough time to finish the book. Going to more book clubs adding books to a to read list you never actually read isn't a good use of your time.
How many of us here would be better served by a far higher execution to new ideas ratio?

If Democrats actually won big and enacted the popular progressive platform they campaign on (Medicare for All, $15 minimum wage, taxing the rich, etc.), it would directly hurt the financial interests of their own donor class. 3

The Jellyfin app on roku is nice. The hardware was literally just a Jellyfin player to me. The number of ads I see and clicks to get Jellyfin launched are my primary metrics for hardware quality. Both have gotten worse since purchase with 2 obvious step change "updates" in the last month or so.
I have an n150 and flirc remote, just haven't done the work. It wasn't worth it for 3 clicks and 1 ad. 7 clicks and 20 ads or whatever it is up to is worth it.

I wonder how much this plays into the ghost jobs narrative. The job is real but the managers running the hiring are too cheap or incompetent to hire someone.
I once had an interview where the hiring manager aggressively and repeatedly told me I was unqualified for the job. They refused to talk about anything I'd done in the last 10 years and just kept asking questions about my first 2 jobs on my resume, which probably shouldn't even be there it was so long ago. When I went bullet point by bullet point down the job description showing I was overqualified for every item on the description, they just said "yeah but you are unqualified for the job." I asked them to point to a single requirement I didn't meet and they said "education." I pointed out the job description listed no education requirements and I had a masters. They just got more hostile and ended the interview early.
I know some would say I should have walked out. It honestly was just a curiosity to me once I realized how they were acting. I haven't applied to another role at that company again and I can't see any reason I ever would.

Statistical analysis I've seen makes it seem like both 2020 and 2024 presidential were stolen elections. The lack of interest in the 2024 anomalies looks sus AF as the kids would say. Unless of course the goal is Republicans win and not honest elections that reflect the will of the people, then it makes perfect sense.
3rd party polling confirms my theory that republican support in the population is literally dying and yet somehow the party isn't losing seats or power. How big can that spread get before the general public catches on? Fair elections aren't in their interest so I have sincere doubts that is what they want.
