**Solar Eclipses and Culture**

Pretend you have never heard of a solar eclipse. The Sun’s behavior has been predictable your whole life. One day, you witness the sky transform as it does in today’s spliced image spanning two hours of the August 12, 2026 solar eclipse . The Sun disappears, leaving behind a bright, empty ring. What would you think had happened? Humans have interpreted eclipses in countless ways throughout history , embedding beliefs about connection, rebirth, or danger into culture. “Eclipse” comes from the Greek word “ ékleipsis ” meaning “abandonment”. In ancient Greece, the solar eclipse marked the anger of the gods and the Sun abandoning humanity. To the Diné people , this celestial alignment is a time of renewal. Out of respect and to avoid the danger of sunlight, the Diné stay inside until the Sun and Moon separate. The Batammariba people of Benin and Togo believe that the Sun and Moon fight during an eclipse, so the community encourages peace among themselves. Eclipses are an example of the longstanding connection between astronomy and society.

What is Perch? It's a macOS (soon iOS too) discovery app that helps you discover cool new tools and startups.
Think of it like Product Hunt, but without all the fake marketing and fluff. Just genuine discovery.
It's curated only at the moment. You can submit your tools and startups too, but I review each one manually and I'm going to be very pick about who gets approved - the opposite of nostr / open source discovery. Why? because I still believe in curation. Lack of curation is what got us Product Hunt.
So, share something cool! I'll likely green light it fast.
It's new, and there are not many tools or apps yet, but that will soon change. Give it a try!
In case you are wondering why I built this...
I wanted a quick way to access all the cool stuff I found so I would not forget where it went. Also, I think people building cool stuff need a way to get it out into the world, and this is just one of the means to accomplish that.
Perch is fully clanker compatible! (I haven't actually checked, but it's being checked now). So you can get your clanker to list your cool thing, check submission status etc...
and.. I will use my clanker to filter out any garbage before it goes in front of my eyes for review. Only the gems make it.

it's my opinion after 3 years bashing my head against the impossibility of imparting some reason to the discussion that nostr itself is a dead end and will never go anywhere, but worse, there are fundamental errors in the cryptography of the design. it should be using a keychain with isolated identity and encryption keys (this would be trivial to design) as just a fundamental starting point. the message format should follow the standard used by email, which is start of line sentinels and plain text data segments, using base64 encoding for binary data. that's just two fundamental errors in the design, json is an awful codec for data and difficult to write an efficient codec for. the merging of identity and encryption means that when your nsec leaks, so does all of your encrypted messages, which includes not just DMs but other sensitive data.
and fundamentally, if your target is adoption by users whose technical skill is zero, users of x or facebook or instagram or tiktok, you hit the problem that they simply are not going to see the reason, or responsibly manage their cryptographic identities, and this is fundamentally something that the establishment system does not want to happen - they want to use biometrics or simple identity verification of users, and every bit of cryptographic permission and access and write control, be entirely on the other side of the network from the user. so in other words, adoption can only be of the userbase we already have on nostr. regardless of everything else you can think of, the users are going to bounce because of having to maintain control of their cryptographic keys, even if it is literally just a fucking file, or a series of 12 or 24 words, they are going to resist this as a hard wall from the get go.
