🚨 Moving out of Illinois does NOT clear an old Illinois DUI: a revocation under 625 ILCS 5/6-205 places a hold in the national Problem Driver Pointer System (PDPS) that blocks EVERY other state from issuing or renewing your license.
Unlike a suspension, which lifts on a set date, an Illinois DUI revocation never expires on its own (625 ILCS 5/6-208) — a DUI from 10, 15, even 20 years ago can still show as an active revocation and "pop up" when your new home state runs your record through PDPS. It doesn't matter that you were only visiting Illinois or never held an Illinois license; one Illinois DUI conviction is enough to trigger the hold. Clearing it requires either a formal Illinois Secretary of State hearing (625 ILCS 5/2-118) — now conducted entirely online, with no travel to Illinois — or a mail-in out-of-state packet held to the identical standards. These are adversarial proceedings: a hearing officer AND a prosecutor appear, and the burden is on YOU to prove you are not a risk to public safety, supported by a current alcohol/drug evaluation (Uniform Report), proof of DUI Risk Education and treatment, and at least three character-reference letters dated within 45 days of the hearing. Full reinstatement generally requires 12 months of documented abstinence (6 months for a Restricted Driving Permit); four DUI convictions carry a lifetime revocation — RDP-only, with a BAIID device, eligible to apply after 10 years. Even after approval, a $500 reinstatement fee plus an SR-22 filing or out-of-state insurance waiver is required before the hold is released.
