My favorite question to ask Libertarian types is whether it is ethical to perform CPR on a stranger who stops breathing and passes out without advanced warning. Lots of Libertarians say it's always unethical to take someone's money without consent, even if they recieve something they want in return.
Okay, sure. But is it okay to break someone's sternum without consent while performing proper forceful CPR? Most Libertarians are just Communists or Capitalists or Conservatives and just don't want to present themselves that way for some reason. So in philosophy there is a controversial moral philosophy known as utilitarianism. Basically, the premise is that the ethical action is always the one that maximizes "utility", whatever that means. A lot of Utilitarians just define utility as net global human pleasure and happiness.
The most common criticism of Utilitarianism is how absurdly inhuman it is. It demands people take actions that produce high-utility outcomes without much consideration for the fact that humans are REALLY bad at knowing what all of the eventual outcomes of their actions are. Furthermore, it completely ignores people's rights, authorizing (and even requiring) an arbitrary amount of lies, manipulation, and violation of others in order to achieve that best outcome. If you can't convince someone to donate excess food to the needy? Steal it from them. If you can't convince a doctor to save 5 other children's lives? Hold the doctor's own child at gunpoint. Etc...
One solution to this is called Negative Utilitarianism. Instead of maximizing pleasure or happiness, Negative Utilitarianism demands people act in a way that minimizes suffering. It doesn't really matter that one person wants something more than another person, or that they will live a long and happy life if you just commit one small atrocity, Negative Utilitarianism requires that the action reduces the amount of sufferring in the world.
The argument I heard against Negative Utilitarianism is that is justifies total human extinction. After all, if there are no humans on Earth, then how can any of them suffer? Personally I think this actually understates just how bad Negative Utilitarianism is. Sure there are a small number of anti-natalists who truly believe in voluntary extinction, but I would say that most fans of Negative Utilitarianism wouldn't be fans of ending humanity. I think most of them would just come up with a justification for not to wiping humans off the face of the Earth, and for why extinction should be ignored as a course of action by the philosophy.
However despite this, I see plenty of examples of systematic sickness within society caused by a strong aversion to suffering. For example, many people go all in on the idea that economic and societal growth can somehow be followed forever. A lot of the reason AI hype, crypto hype, and even regular old stock market investing exist is because people would rather throw a hail mary vaguely towards the dream of a post-scarcity society than accept the idea that life will continually require innocent people doing their very best to suffer and die for the rest of eternity.
My ethical beliefs aren't really either of these versions of Utilitarianism, but I do believe that even just existing should outweigh just about any amount or kind of suffering. To me, when I hear "the Earth is going to become overpopulated and turn human life into a living hell, I'm pretty happy since that means we aren't going to have to go extinct of waste our resources on shallow hedonism.
Because of this, it's hard for me to justify ANY sort of long term compounding investment. In my view, such things are unnatural, temporary, and undeserved. I hate having money that comes from something bad or undeserved.

They are SUPPOSED to be able to turn over their data. The whole point is that if someone cares about their privacy then that data won't compromise their privacy or anonymity. I'm actually quite happy with my job. That's why I'm asking. I notice that Monero.jobs only lists IT jobs. Society would collapse if everyone only worked IT jobs. Not to mention that the IRS rapes anyone who doesn't disclose employment, defeating half the purpose of getting paid in Monero.
The idea of everyone getting paid in Monero is very appealing, but it doesn't seem very practical to me as it is now. And if everyone can't do it then I'm just exploiting those people without the same privelege as me. I want a way to filter people's manual posts out from all of their random boosts. I want to be able to sort my feed by engagement. I want to be able to randomize unseen posts from the last 24 hours. There is a study that claims humans only process information at 10 bits per second. Ok, that's obviously bullshit. Let's assume they meant that that was just the actionable throughput. (i.e. belief formation and decisionmaking.) We can assume that people can still interpret enormous amounts of bits or direct many disparate parts of their body simultaneously.
If that 10 bits figure is accurate, then the maximum speed that a human could type random letters is a little more than 2 per second, or a little less than 130 letters per minute. Does anyone know if this is accurate? Are there any studies on humans typing RANDOM letters? (Not words?)

I opened my computer up and found that I couldn't left click.
To fix the problem I managed to open up a terminal and I typed to command to restart my window manager. That solved the problem.
Then I closed the terminal. As it turns out, this was a mistake. All of the windows I had open were half broken and basically everything else was full broken. I had to switch to a TTY and restart my window manager again. This time with an "&" at the end.

Another idea I had was to have a space that is euclidian in one or more axis and hyperbolic in the others. For example, if you want to go around an obstacle then you do so in one of the euclidian axes and if you want to gather resources then you do so on the hyperbolic axes. This does create a really funny property though. It locks the rotation of objects that are very big or very stiff or both. Like, imagine walking to the opposite end of a big object suspended over a pit, unable to rotate due to the fact that it has more than 360 degrees in two of its axes and it doesn't have anywhere else to put it.

I've been thinking about geometry and space. Specifically I've been thinking about different spaces in terms of resource gathering and resource delivery. When gathering resources, the most important thing is that a small search radius encompasses a very large volume. One of the great tragedies of living in euclidian space is that volume only grows polynomially with respect to radius. For example, on a flat plane, the area of your search circle is pi*r^2. Emphasis on the r^2.
Hyperbolic space by contrast has far better properties in this regard. For example you might see something like 2^r instead. This could be the difference between having 400 resources in a 20 unit radius and having 1,000,000 resources in a 20 unit radius.
However, hyperbolic space is far worse for resource delivery. If you are transporting a resource from a source to a destnation then it's important to be able to navigate around obstacles. For example, the fat butt of the another guy delivering between the same source and destination.
In hyperbolic space, the circumference of an obstacle with radius r is on the order of 2^r. Exponential again. Meanwhile in euclidian space, the circumference of an obstacle with radius r is linear: 2*pi*r. This means that if 20 people are performing a delivery in euclician space, they might have to travel about 20 units in order to get around eachother. Whereas in hyperbolic space, some poor delivery guy might have to travel a path of 1,000,000 units just to avoid intersecting with the paths of the other 19 delivery guys.
The ideal space has both of these properties, but clearly messing with the curvature of the space isn't enough to accomplish that. Cranking up the number of dimensions far beyond our ordinary three can help a lot, but unlike messing with the curveature, (like for hyperbolic space) the effects of high dimensionality don't depend on scale.
That means that even just existing in such a world would be very difficult. With 100 dimensions you'd need 100 legs just to avoid falling over, and you would need like 100 unit^99s of skin to cover one unit^100 of flesh or your organs would fall out. Not great!
The only way I can think of to avoid this issue is if the space is some sort of very complicated manifold where distant locations are connected to eachother as if by a portal. But that isn't super nice either. For example, in regular euclidian and hyperbolic space you can always make a path slightly shorter by just taking a small shortcut. That's not always the case in more complicated manifolds. There are some cycles you can take where there isn't any small shortcut and there isn't any way to shorten a looping path without going a completely different way.
Additionally, such a manifold would no longer be as symmetric as euclidian and hyperbolic space. Even if there were no stationary objects at all to act as reference points in the space, you may still be able to tell different locations apart just based purely on how the space loops back on itself.
I'll have to keep thinking about this.

Pro-tip for writing a story. If you can make something explode within the first paragraph of your story, it will really draw people in. The most important part though is don't tell the viewer why it exploded. You don't even need a reason, just imply that everything will be explained soon and that it's related to the things you actually wanted the reader to care about.

I've got a million drafts of replies I intended to make to peoplebut that I never got around to finishing for one reason or another. I love and support arguments of all kinds.
I also understand that most arguments on the internet don't lead to agreement. And I don't necessaraly believe they SHOULD. Not everybody knows why they are right, or why the other person is wrong, and if an argument isn't conclusive like that then it shouldn't change people's minds.
I believe that in any case like that, the end result should be one person ghosting the other person. Give both people a chance to stew on their beliefs and start over from the beginning next time.
I've decided to go through all of my old drafts and follow all the people I couldn't finish arguing with. The goal is to increase the chances of the argument occurring again, now with both parties hopefully having new perspective.

If it can prevent someone from going into shock and dying yes, but otherwise no. Invasive surgery is actually really fucked up from an objective point of view.
When someone's thorax gets opened up, typically the only prognosis is death. In our genetic history, 99% of the time someone has voluntarally allowed their thorax to be opened up in order to "help them", the person performing the operation was a psycho witch doctor. I imagine that most of the people in our genetic history who did end up getting thorax surgery only did so because they were on lots of narcotics or they were otherwise very out of their right mind.
I think it's very reasonable to demand a very high bar of justification from our doctors when they suggest opening up our chest. And it only makes sense that the right way of performing thorax surgery would require quite a lot of conviction on the part of the person getting the surgery.
Even from a practical perspective, there are a lot of benefits to being lucid during an important surgery. What better feedback for if the surgeon fucks sonething up than a person who can literally feel it? How many stupid fuck ups like operating on the wrong organ or leaving things inside the patient could be avoided if they weren't knocked out? How many spontaneous decisions have surgeons had to make without the feedback of the person recieving the surgery? If the surgeon is going to be fucking up someone's body anyway then why take a bunch of anesthesia just to fuck up their other organs too? Don't forget that anesthesia is literally a poison.
Pain sucks because it's so strongly associated with injury and death. If this thorax surgery is supposedly fighting injury or death, then shouldn't the supposedly informed and consenting patient be able to look past the pain to all of the advantages of the surgery?
I actually read an article about someone who had to get open heart surgery with minimal anesthesia because injecting anesthesia in that area was very likely to kill them. It's been done before.

I only see one issue: authority. Bridge administrators have no authority to share ActivityPub posts. They are just random Joes reposting somebody else's content with no associated responsibility or reputation. There's nothing giving the bridge version of the posts legitimacy. If there was then all of the problems I brought up would be solved simultaneously.
Can you explain what DHT means? And isn't DNS's only job to associate a URL with an IP address? Are Pubky's authority mechanisms compatible with ActivityPub?

How would discovery by pubkey change these bridge problems at all? Would it somehow force 5 bridges to all use the same account for the same external user? Nost's design doesn't allow *bridging* that much I mean. Nostr throws away the guaruntee that a user's post actually came from that user's instance. Guess what? A million forms of self sovereignty existed before Nostr, and new ones will continue being created. I already mentioned the possibility of a single-user ActivityPub instance. Why should we throw away the digital signature of someone like that just because it doesn't come in the same exact format as Nostr?
Nostr's bridges suck actually, and anyone who adds another bridge will just be creating more users and duplicate posts. If we value having a decentralized protocol then why are we okay with the fact that it pretty much requires centralized bridges?

Yeah, they authenticate that the content was delivered by the server instance with zero third party interference. That's a pretty nice guaruntee, but Nostr's design doesn't allow even THAT much. Do you believe that Nostr is the only possible way of granting users sovereignty over their accounts? Why does everyone HAVE to put their effort (into Nostr)? Why does Nostr have to throw away perfectly good guaruntees just because they aren't handed to Nostr on a silver platter? If platform more similar to Nostr comes around, would you be telling Nostr devs to bend over backwards to be able to properly federate with them? Do you even want to bridge with other platforms?

People gain something tangibly beneficial when closing their eyes. Closing one's eyes is a natural biological function. Blinking and closing the eyes protects them and moistens them, which is vital to their function and to removing irritants.
The substances I avoid aren't biological functions. They are exogenous ligands that are only allowed inside people in order to interfere with their body's internal signaling. The goal is not to provide some sort of tangible benefit, but rather to induce some sort of internal state. Even the direct and intended effects of these substances are shallow, redundant, and just plain bad. And don't even bother trying to defend their numerous negative side effects.
A more accurate analogy might be muting someone because they believe something different. But obviously you are looking for an example of something that's not always bad, so my analogy doesn't really help me to understand your position.

But that's exactly it! It ISN'T a "them" problem! Even if a user owns their own instance and digitally signs every post, a bridge NECESSARILY modifies the posts it bridges, thereby invalidating that signature.
If a protocol requires everybody ELSE to bend over backwards to accomodate it then that protocol doesn't play nicely with others! There's no point in sugarcoating it!
I wonder, does Pubky have this problem federating with ActivityPub?

Platforms like Nostr have a bridge problem. They can't effectively federate with users on other protocols. The issue is that posts from bridged users are "unofficial" in a sense. There's nothing stopping three different people from bridging the same user's posts to three different proxy accounts, all claiming to represent the original user.
What if that user wants to take control over the Nostr version of his account? Too bad! The bridge owner has zero obligation to hand over the key! In fact, the bridge owner can make the user do whatever they want on the Nostr side, adding and removing their posts at will. It's disappointing really. I don't have a good idea of how this could be fixed.

A girl is a transfer student to a school in a small town known for it's rich folk-lore and regular reports of monster sightings. This girl has read lots of monster romance stories though, so she can recognize the setup from a mile away.
She will meet a boy who seems at first to be an ordinary human student, they will find themselves hopelessly entangled with eachother, she will find out that he's secretly one of the monsters, and then drama will ensue. Will she be able to look past his huge, inconvenient secret? Or will their love for eachother overcome the obstacle in their relationship?
But as much as she loves her smut- er, her "romance" novels, she knows that she just isn't assertive and strong enough in real life to handle all that drama. She resolves that she won't bother trying to fight the plot; she already knows how it ends.
On the first day, she meets a plain and unassuming boy. He starts telling her the lore of the town, but she knows that anything he says will only make her inevitable decision harder than it has to be. She interrupts him by asking him out on a date him before he can explain the lore of the monsters. He looks surprised, but accepts.
Their interests don't line up very well, but if their relationship can't handle them having different interests then how will it survive them being different species? Eventually she discovers a unique enjoyment in figuring out just what makes each of his hobbies so interesting to him, and she gains a sense of perspective trying to communicate just what is so great about each of her own interests.
Finally, the dreaded day comes where she will have to confront his true nature. She has been mentally preparing for the reveal, but she feels just as fragile and meek as the day they met. At this point how could she possibly internalize the fact that she's dating-
"I'm not the monster."
What? She misheard him.
"No, you didn't, I was never the monster. I was literally always just the minor side character who explains the lore at the beginning of the story and then gets out of the way."
But. Huh? That's confusing. Was there never a monster then?
"Oh no, there's definitely a monster. You didn't see him? He's the guy who's always brooding in the corner and who shares all of your hobbies and interests. He actually got really upset when you started dating me. We've basically been cucking him for several months straight..."
Huh. That other guy really does stand out once she notices him. That sounds really stressful though! Why did her boyfriend even agree to go out with her in the first place?

Have you tried going on the darknet and purchasing stolen email accounts? I think that might work really well for uour use case. The accounts will register as legitimate to every other website and any time your bot needs a fresh account it will have one.

I think the only reason you are saying that is because sobriety has such a great connotation.
