I'm not sure if you're overestimating the power of the state or if I'm underestimating it. It's impossible to regulate Bitcoin to death, it's a global network.
They had very special demographics. Also it's not 1862 in America anymore. We have all these laws and capital controls and we have a central bank etc..... Or who says we should grow like that ? Africa is growing like crazy and that's good but I would still rather live in the USA.

Monetary expansion through centealised means that are arbitrary decided, are no where close to the same as a decentralised system with hard coded tail inflation.
Personally, I prefer the hard cap structure of Bitcoin, but I would much rather live under a monetary system akin to monero's than a gold standard.
