À partir d'une image acquise avec un télescope Celestron C11, l’astronome Maillard a réalisé une reconstitution 3D de la vallée Hadley-Apennine, site historique de l'alunissage d'Apollo 15 le 30 juillet 1971. En combinant cette observation avec les données altimétriques du Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO), une modélisation numérique du terrain a été élaborée sous QGIS puis intégrée dans Blender afin de restituer fidèlement le relief lunaire.
L'animation finale propose un travelling aérien au- dessus de la vallée Hadley-Apennine, depuis la région du site d'alunissage d'Apollo 15 jusqu'aux contreforts des Montes Apenninus. L'obiectif n'était pas seulement de produire un effet visuel, mais de retrouver la géographie réelle du site dans une perspective immersive.

Explication :
Une soucoupe volante venue de l'espace s'est écrasée dans le désert de l'Utah après avoir été suivie par radar et poursuivie par des hélicoptères. C'était en 2004, et aucun extraterrestre n'était impliqué. La soucoupe visible ici était la capsule de retour d'échantillons de la mission Genesis, faisant partie du vaisseau spatial robotisé Genesis, lancé en 2001 par la NASA pour étudier le Soleil.
L'atterrissage, beaucoup plus brutal que prévu, à plus de 300 kilomètres par heure, s'est produit parce que les parachutes ne se sont pas déployés comme prévu. La mission Genesis était en orbite autour du Soleil afin de recueillir des particules du vent solaire, habituellement déviées par le champ magnétique terrestre. Malgré l'écrasement, de nombreux échantillons ont pu être récupérés dans un état suffisamment bon pour être analysés.
Les découvertes issues de la mission Genesis ont notamment permis d'obtenir de nouveaux renseignements sur la composition du Soleil et sur les différences d'abondance de certains éléments à travers le Système solaire. Ces résultats ont fourni de précieux indices sur les mécanismes de formation du Soleil et des planètes il y a plusieurs milliards d'années.
