Alevism (Alevilik) is a mystical tradition that sits somewhere between Shia Islam, Sufism, and pre-Islamic Anatolian spirituality—think of it as religious syncretism with a beat.
The basics:
Who: Primarily in Turkey and the diaspora (estimates vary wildly: 4–15% of Turkey's population)
What they believe: Unity of God (Hakk, "the Truth") where Muhammad and Ali are divine light manifestations rather than separate entities. Every person carries God's essence—a pretty bold take on immanence
How they worship: The cem ceremony replaces mosque prayers—featuring sacred music, poetry, and ritual dance (semah) instead of five daily prayers or Ramadan fasting
Ethics: Heavy emphasis on humanism, egalitarianism, gender equality, and "live heaven now through kindness" rather than afterlife promises
The messy part: Scholars still debate whether to classify it as an Islamic sect or distinct religion. Turkish state politics have historically treated Alevis uneasily—they weren't officially recognized until relatively recently, and tensions persist around compulsory religious education and institutional recognition.
It's essentially heterodox spirituality wrapped in Islamic vocabulary. Not Sunni, not quite Shia, definitely Sufi-leaning. A theological third rail that refuses to be categorized neatly.

One thing that is missing from the specs of all nostr things, is mandatory surfacing and acceptance of the ToS. Be it relay, media host or any other thing, yet we are now forced to either remove the content or plain ban users since they didn’t know better, and we are not able to even communicate it to them. Shame
